Sam Webb: Schembechler Hall shocked & extra motivated by ESPN allegations
Sam Webb called around to his Michigan sources to get their take on the ESPN report regarding Connor Stalions. "We found out when you did," said one. Rest of the story here (please do subscribe to 247 to get beyond the paywall). But I think it's significant info in that it lends further credence to the idea that this was a rogue staffer, not something that the Michigan coaching staff sanctioned or organized.

If we didn't know about this so-called rule, we'd think it's just a small part of strategizing.
None of us even knew it was a rule a week ago.
And it probably won't even be a rule in a couple of years.
October 24th, 2023 at 12:18 PM ^
That’s the potentially infuriating thing about this—if Michigan gets punished, it’s for breaking a rule that the NCAA already knows is dumb and will rescind soon enough anyhow.
October 24th, 2023 at 12:21 PM ^
I didn't even know that gesticulating with one's left hand might nullify a game-winning punt return, let alone get one fired for cause.
October 24th, 2023 at 10:04 AM ^
Beyond that, in this era of all games being televised, this seems like an awful lot of work for minimal benefit and significant risk.
October 24th, 2023 at 10:39 AM ^
I agree with the sentiment... however; people keep referencing "the law", but it does not apply here at all. The only thing that applies are NCAA rules, nothing more. I wish folks would stop conflating the two things.
October 24th, 2023 at 12:30 PM ^
I hope you're right.
Its just ridiculous to me that everyone is acting as if you get issued 1 set of play call signs and you aren't allowed to change them.
I would fire my whole staff if they used the same signs (on a nationally televised game with cameras everywhere) game after game.
Besides, I think CS was a superfan willing to do anything that he thought might help him add value to the team. I don't think he did in this instance though because of the above.
October 24th, 2023 at 9:26 AM ^
Jim is quirky and many things, but a liar is not one of them. When he said he had no idea this was going on, he is telling the truth.
My guess is that Stalions was tasked to understand the opposing team's signals and he went well beyond what was understood by that assignment.
October 24th, 2023 at 9:35 AM ^
With the report that when he was stationed in San Diego, Stalions was using all his money to fly to Michigan games every weekend, including living in his car so he could AirB&B his house to afford this, seems like this guy is incredibly hard-core and was willing to do whatever it took, including essentially devoting all his own resources to furthering his future with UM football. Doesn't seem like a far stretch to see a guy who would do this on his own, with his own funds, to try and bring any and everything he could offer to UM to make the grade.
October 24th, 2023 at 10:38 AM ^
dude seems unhinged, imo.
October 24th, 2023 at 10:48 AM ^
This seems like "enthusiasm unknown to mankind" mixed with a drunken idea of the "it might be crazy enough to work".
October 24th, 2023 at 12:45 PM ^
He seems like he's one of those jive turkeys.
October 24th, 2023 at 12:14 PM ^
Yeah... and that is the red flag they should have noticed before hiring him.
October 24th, 2023 at 9:40 AM ^
I asked about this earlier, but if someone went up and asked him "wow, you're really good at this, how?" and he responded with "I watch a crap ton of tape" or whatever, I'm not sure you could do much more. If he coordinated this using his personal cell phone and personal credit cards, you can't control that outside of compliance trainings and whatnot. It's why I have a work cell and personal cell so I never have to worry about my employer getting access to my personal stuff.
You'll get "lack of institutional control" people out there, but you can't police people on their personal actions. Again, there is probably a compliance requirement that was missed here, but you're not getting the whole staff on this unless there was a receipt that passed by Harbaugh or Warde (they don't approve expenses I bet) or something more than just a guy being good at his job.
October 24th, 2023 at 9:48 AM ^
Would a receipt for 2 cheeseburgers be enough?
October 24th, 2023 at 11:16 AM ^
Only if the burgers were from the Brown Jug.. with Harbaugh’s name and signature. I’ve heard Jim’s very generous with gratuities.
October 24th, 2023 at 9:51 AM ^
Not to get political (as I get political), but this whole thing kinda reminds me of the duality of Joe Biden. He's simultaneously a senile old man who can't walk, but also a corrupt political mastermind. Jim Harbaugh is apparently simultaneously a weirdo football guy who loves to mow his lawn and couldn't use YouTube TV, but is also cheating and running a illegal spy network
October 24th, 2023 at 9:56 AM ^
Interestingly, Jim said he was not aware of any illegal sign-stealing, but he didn't say he was unaware of any off-campus scouting operations. He said he didn't *direct* any off-campus scouting operations. So he may have been *aware* of legal off-campus scouting and legal sign-stealing. Though I object to the use of the word "scouting" here since Stalions was paying randos (not "scouts") to take videos. He was paying for videotape, which is a whole 'nother topic in the NCAA Bylaws and not clearly prohibited.
October 24th, 2023 at 10:43 AM ^
But not "fully aware?"
October 24th, 2023 at 12:41 PM ^
Not trying to be a jerk, but Harbaugh specifically did use the "awareness" in his statement:
"I have no awareness of anyone on our staff having done that or having directed that action."
October 24th, 2023 at 12:19 PM ^
Beware of eager beavers—they cause as many problems as they pretend to solve.
October 24th, 2023 at 9:26 AM ^
Not sure that "not knowing" is a valid defense in the NCAA world.
October 24th, 2023 at 9:34 AM ^
You’re right. They should all say they had arachnoid cysts on their brains and forgot. We know the NCAA and B1G accept this excuse as a valid defense.
October 24th, 2023 at 9:37 AM ^
Of course it's not. But it's also a matter of scale. The NCAA can say the HC is fully responsible for everything, but the fact of the matter is that it's a lot different when the coach tells an assistant coach to break a rule, v. a non-coach secretly acting on their own to try and gain some advantage.
October 24th, 2023 at 9:43 AM ^
You're right - for 'not knowing' you get 3 games. But when you fess up and tell the NCAA to F-off because you don't care, you get off scott-free.
October 24th, 2023 at 9:48 AM ^
Hell, when basketball HC's are on FBI wire-tap offering the NBA league-minimum to 17 year olds you get nothing! Jim should've skipped UM's games and personally been in the stands filming opponents, it would've been a total nothing burger.
October 24th, 2023 at 9:26 AM ^
It would be interesting to see the ncaa reacton if numerous people in the stands just started keeping their phones out and continuously pointed towards the field during gameplay. Not actually bothering to record anything (or even have them on), but just to highlight that fact that it is practically impossible to prevent people from doing this (no school is going to stop people from taking in their phones).
October 24th, 2023 at 9:28 AM ^
What I love so far about this team is what people would normally consider distractions, this team uses as fuel and motivation. There is no doubt there are some facts to this investigation, but there are also many reporters that represent specific teams that are using this to throw anything and everything out there to put a big dark cloud over Michigan. The fact that Ohio State has accused Clemson (after their lose to them) and Georgia (after their loss to them) of some sort of sign stealing or illegal filming makes me believe a lot of the accusations are coming from their side. Man has this rivalry changed when they have to go to something off the field to complain about. They might be the softest team that somehow gets the most fortunate events in College football.
October 24th, 2023 at 9:40 AM ^
Well, get in line, because Ohio against the world is already a thing, same as it ever was. Everyone has always been out to get the Buckeyes.
Totally unrelated, did you know that OSU made the playoff last year despite not winning their division?
October 24th, 2023 at 10:14 AM ^
And getting hamblasted by 3 scores in their own building. Michigan (and most others outside of Tuscaloosa) would never get that second chance.
October 24th, 2023 at 12:47 PM ^
Excellent point, bd. High level athletes often LOOK FOR disrespect to use a motivator (Michael Jordan and Tom Brady both did). This team will undoubtedly use this to stomp on opponents. "Off field distraction"? Try blood in the water.
October 24th, 2023 at 9:34 AM ^
Mdog made a good point that when you get info from an analyst / subordinate you generally assume they produced their report using legal and approved means.
So yeah I assume they all would be shocked. And pissed.
October 24th, 2023 at 12:13 PM ^
If the report produces nothing useful, you have no reason to ask, “How did you get/do this?”
if one of your staffers breaks a rule and it produces no results, would you notice?
October 24th, 2023 at 9:35 AM ^
Call in Alan Turing! If you can't get him (because he's deceased) call Benedict Cumberbatch or Alan Leech as the next best thing.
October 24th, 2023 at 9:41 AM ^
Alan Alda could have this mystery solved in a day, with laughs.
October 24th, 2023 at 9:37 AM ^
Has anyone answered the question as to why he was standing near the defensive coaches with the clipboard or whatever sheets he had? Do we know what his role was in that capacity and if his rogue activities factored into whatever he was doing there?
October 24th, 2023 at 9:56 AM ^
If he was helping decode signs in real time on the sideline, isn't that part totally allowed?
October 24th, 2023 at 9:56 AM ^
He is (was) "the sign-stealing guy."
October 24th, 2023 at 10:09 AM ^
Which is not against the rules.
October 24th, 2023 at 10:58 AM ^
It was his job to decode signs. Perfectly within the rules. How does everyone not know this by now?
October 24th, 2023 at 11:06 AM ^
You are allowed to steal signs. His role is not being questioned, just his methods.
Which, yeah, is completely stupid.
Like, you can rob a gas station, but you need to pump some gas first. Then it's OK.
October 24th, 2023 at 12:11 PM ^
If you overhear some juicy corporate gossip in the mens room at the NYSE, you can buy stock, but if you overhear it while you are wiretapping the CEO of GameStop, then you can't.
October 24th, 2023 at 2:07 PM ^
This isn't a great take. Figuring out a team's calls based on tendencies or in-game assessment is all OK. Bribing another team for their signals, hacking, coercing someone to disclose signals through violence, are all clearly not OK, even if aimed at the same goal.
October 24th, 2023 at 12:56 PM ^
Has anyone answered the question as to why he was standing near the defensive coaches with the clipboard or whatever sheets he had?
Yes, because that was literally his job. His official job was analyzing video and stealing signs. It's just a matter of if went beyond that and committed violations. Stalions being on the sideline and calling out signs from the opposing sideline is not the smoking gun that everyone seems to think it is
October 24th, 2023 at 9:39 AM ^
If this report is true, it means either nobody at Michigan asked Stalions any questions in the last few days, which is nearly impossible to believe, or that they did ask him questions, and he told lie after lie, or said nothing. Those folks who felt bad for Stalions are dopes. "Oh, he's just a nice sailor boy who didn't think he was doing anything wrong!" This 'wannabe' has made an incredible mess that will be hard to get out from under. He needs to tell Michigan everything. Who knows what else this rat was up to?
October 24th, 2023 at 9:47 AM ^
Quit being an asshat.
October 24th, 2023 at 12:24 PM ^
Get it right, he's an assMUNCH not an asshat
October 24th, 2023 at 9:54 AM ^
I think it’s common and appropriate that no one in the department talked to him in the last few days. Otherwise it could look like they are trying to influence him and/or get their stories straight.
October 24th, 2023 at 9:57 AM ^
He's been put on leave. He probably was told not to have any contact with anyone associated with the university.
