Sam Webb: Schembechler Hall shocked & extra motivated by ESPN allegations

Submitted by Communist Football on October 24th, 2023 at 9:14 AM

Sam Webb called around to his Michigan sources to get their take on the ESPN report regarding Connor Stalions. "We found out when you did," said one. Rest of the story here (please do subscribe to 247 to get beyond the paywall). But I think it's significant info in that it lends further credence to the idea that this was a rogue staffer, not something that the Michigan coaching staff sanctioned or organized.

I hope you're right.

Its just ridiculous to me that everyone is acting as if you get issued 1 set of play call signs and you aren't allowed to change them.

I would fire my whole staff if they used the same signs (on a nationally televised game with cameras everywhere) game after game.

Besides, I think CS was a superfan willing to do anything that he thought might help him add value to the team. I don't think he did in this instance though because of the above.

Jim is quirky and many things, but a liar is not one of them. When he said he had no idea this was going on, he is telling the truth.

My guess is that Stalions was tasked to understand the opposing team's signals and he went well beyond what was understood by that assignment.

With the report that when he was stationed in San Diego, Stalions was using all his money to fly to Michigan games every weekend, including living in his car so he could AirB&B his house to afford this, seems like this guy is incredibly hard-core and was willing to do whatever it took, including essentially devoting all his own resources to furthering his future with UM football.  Doesn't seem like a far stretch to see a guy who would do this on his own, with his own funds, to try and bring any and everything he could offer to UM to make the grade.

I asked about this earlier, but if someone went up and asked him "wow, you're really good at this, how?" and he responded with "I watch a crap ton of tape" or whatever, I'm not sure you could do much more. If he coordinated this using his personal cell phone and personal credit cards, you can't control that outside of compliance trainings and whatnot. It's why I have a work cell and personal cell so I never have to worry about my employer getting access to my personal stuff.

You'll get "lack of institutional control" people out there, but you can't police people on their personal actions. Again, there is probably a compliance requirement that was missed here, but you're not getting the whole staff on this unless there was a receipt that passed by Harbaugh or Warde (they don't approve expenses I bet) or something more than just a guy being good at his job.

Not to get political (as I get political), but this whole thing kinda reminds me of the duality of Joe Biden. He's simultaneously a senile old man who can't walk, but also a corrupt political mastermind. Jim Harbaugh is apparently simultaneously a weirdo football guy who loves to mow his lawn and couldn't use YouTube TV, but is also cheating and running a illegal spy network

Interestingly, Jim said he was not aware of any illegal sign-stealing, but he didn't say he was unaware of any off-campus scouting operations. He said he didn't *direct* any off-campus scouting operations. So he may have been *aware* of legal off-campus scouting and legal sign-stealing. Though I object to the use of the word "scouting" here since Stalions was paying randos (not "scouts") to take videos. He was paying for videotape, which is a whole 'nother topic in the NCAA Bylaws and not clearly prohibited.

Of course it's not.  But it's also a matter of scale.  The NCAA can say the HC is fully responsible for everything, but the fact of the matter is that it's a lot different when the coach tells an assistant coach to break a rule, v. a non-coach secretly acting on their own to try and gain some advantage.

It would be interesting to see the ncaa reacton if numerous people in the stands just started keeping their phones out and continuously pointed towards the field during gameplay.  Not actually bothering to record anything (or even have them on), but just to highlight that fact that it is practically impossible to prevent people from doing this (no school is going to stop people from taking in their phones).

What I love so far about this team is what people would normally consider distractions, this team uses as fuel and motivation.  There is no doubt there are some facts to this investigation, but there are also many reporters that represent specific teams that are using this to throw anything and everything out there to put a big dark cloud over Michigan.  The fact that Ohio State has accused Clemson (after their lose to them) and Georgia (after their loss to them) of some sort of sign stealing or illegal filming makes me believe a lot of the accusations are coming from their side.  Man has this rivalry changed when they have to go to something off the field to complain about.  They might be the softest team that somehow gets the most fortunate events in College football.

Mdog made a good point that when you get info from an analyst / subordinate you generally assume they produced their report using legal and approved means.

So yeah I assume they all would be shocked. And pissed.

Has anyone answered the question as to why he was standing near the defensive coaches with the clipboard or whatever sheets he had? Do we know what his role was in that capacity and if his rogue activities factored into whatever he was doing there?

This isn't a great take. Figuring out a team's calls based on tendencies or in-game assessment is all OK.  Bribing another team for their signals, hacking, coercing someone to disclose signals through violence, are all clearly not OK, even if aimed at the same goal.

Yes, because that was literally his job. His official job was analyzing video and stealing signs. It's just a matter of if went beyond that and committed violations. Stalions being on the sideline and calling out signs from the opposing sideline is not the smoking gun that everyone seems to think it is

If this report is true, it means either nobody at Michigan asked Stalions any questions in the last few days, which is nearly impossible to believe, or that they did ask him questions, and he told lie after lie, or said nothing.  Those folks who felt bad for Stalions are dopes.  "Oh, he's just a nice sailor boy who didn't think he was doing anything wrong!"  This 'wannabe' has made an incredible mess that will be hard to get out from under.  He needs to tell Michigan everything.  Who knows what else this rat was up to?
