MSU Coach Search - Urban

Submitted by poseidon7902 on November 2nd, 2023 at 8:30 AM

I know at first it was laughable that MSU fans felt they had a chance to land Urban.  The fanaticism around his potential hire made watching from the outside enjoyable as RCMB splooges all over themselves anytime someone posts the GIF of urban changing from OSU red to MSU Green.  Lately though, the smoke around him has gotten thicker.  Camparoni is one of MSU's better trusted insiders and he's saying there's interest and it sounds like they are willing to pay him anything he wants to come.  I can't imagine Urban would want to come to East Lansing and have his legacy tarnished trying to scrape out wins against OSU, PSU, and UM.  Granted if the NCAA decides to make an example of Harbaugh, or he decides to run off to the NFL, the UM side of that could get interesting.  Do you see Urban taking the job at MSU?  USC/ND don't seem to be opening up any time soon and if he wants to coach again, I don't know if there's another big school who will be looking any time soon.

I mentioned Texas A&M above.   And, there's one other school where the "chants for change" are growing louder - that school - USC (Southern Cal).  A future B1G conference member.   Far better recruiting locale - warmer weather - etc.

So - my guess is - those two schools might be looking and Meyer would be on the list of "candidates to consider".

Matty, I respect your opinion - with the remaining schedule, SC could add a few more in the loss column - and, this is with a returning Heisman winning QB.   SC still has Washington, Oregon, and UCLA on their schedule.

Now, I agree - LA / USC is offensively oriented and looks for the "shiny new object" that is points on the board.

IIRC - Riley's record is similar (or worse) than Clay Helton's so far.

Maybe, as others noted - the NFL comes calling for Riley.   If SC doesn't learn to play defense - I wonder what the future will look like for the Trojans.

No way USC would look at Meyer now when they wouldn't look at him a few years ago... and they are still winning games with Lincoln Riley.  They *might* want to change a few years after Caleb Williams leaves, but maybe not.

Besides, Meyer's appeal decreases with each passing year he sits in a broadcast booth.

My thought about USC is that they're not going to enjoy playing football in the B10. I think that they are going to be more of an 8-4 or 9-3 at best type team rather than a conference winner because they do not play quality defense. They would go up against a Michigan team that puts three tight ends on the field at once, and they will not know what to do.

my first response to this was "LOLOLOL, there's no freaking way that dude is going to go somewhere that he has to build from less-than-scratch."

i still think that's true, but now i'm honestly hoping he takes it.  no way sparty is consistently competitive in the expanded big ten, and the thought of him looking permanently pissy and eating sad pizza in east lansing just delights me.

take it, urban.  i'm begging you.

by the way, he's way more likely to return to florida than he is to take the sparty job.

At first I thought no way he would want to go there, but now I could kind of see it from his viewpoint: He dominated the Big Ten once, why can't he do it again, he hates Michigan and wants a chance to beat them again, he was sort of pushed out at OSU by the Zack Smith thing, could want revenge on them as well. His reputation as a coach is tarnished after Jacksonville, might want another shot.

And when I think about could he succeed, I think it will depend on his staff. His Jacksonville staff had Charlie Strong, Chris Ash, and the Iowa strength guy that fired for being racist. If that is the kind of staff he is going to assemble then I welcome him to East Lansing.

I don’t think it is likely because

a) not sure he wants to coach again

b) if he does want to coach again there are better options

but I suppose anything is possible.  It certainly helps MSU quickly regain some competitive juice (no Tucker pun intended) because the alternative is like Josh McDaniels?  Narduzzi?  Mike Tressel?

Watching them moan and whine about how Michigan supposedly defiled the integrity of the game, while at the same time bending over and prostrating themselves to do whatever it takes for good ol Urbz to make his way to East Lansing.....

Pot, meet kettle.

If he wants to be all in, Urban can win a lot of places.

He can win without great facilities or walking into a stacked roster situation.  He can build a program if you are willing to give him the time.

Of course it helps to have those things, and it really helps to have boosters willing to commit a lot of money.  An AD who is at his beck and call.  Fans who buy in to the way he does things.

Sparty checks a lot of boxes, other than the roster.  But in the portal era, he can fix that pretty quick.  And a coach with his profile isn't going to be limited to building Mork-style on 3 stars from Ohio.

There is talk about how difficult it would be to win in the backyard of Michigan and Ohio State -- with the end of B1G divisions, that's not nearly as much of a factor and Sparty's schedule is pretty reasonable going forward, although 2027 looks like it might be brutal.

If Urban wants to coach and Sparty is willing to write a large enough check, it could happen.

Agree.  That's the way I see it.  People are being too dismissive of it.  Urban is somewhat damaged goods now so a lot of schools wouldn't look at him.  We all know MSU would sell its soul to not be football little brother.  The contract offer will be ridiculous and probably still less than Ishbia's quarterly dividend income from USM.

Uh...no he can't. Where's the proof of this? This is a dramatically different era of football than when Meyer did well at Utah. But even counting that, when has ever he won in the situation you describe?

I dunno, man -- I just can't see him taking on a serious reclamation project in EL.  Maybe if he was going to a USC, Texas, A&M, etc with tons of structural advantages.  Unless this is just a "feather the nest" money grab, I don't see it.  Assuming the most favorable set of circumstances, MSU feels like it's three years away from being competitive.  And by competitive, I do not mean dominant.  I don't see how Urban is up for a couple years of ass-kickings while that plays out (again, assuming the best circumstances for him).

The Urban smoke is no different than the Dante Moore smoke from the off season. It’s just bread crumbs to give their fanbase hope. No legit source has mentioned anything about it

Ain't happening unless MSU is able to resolve their other administrative issues: Dysfunctional BoT, lack of permanent President and the tiny matter of Tuck's contract.

Good they deserve each other . However if msu fans think he would able to recruit the same type of players he did at Florida and osu they’re crazy

One of the few silver linings of this whole Stalions situation is watching MSU fans try to take the high road while also prostrating themselves before Urban Meyer because like all fanbases they're hypocrites.  Of course, in UM's case their violations seem limited to a lunch with some commits and Stalions looking at iPhone videos while Meyer's flaws are covering up for a wife abuser and cheating on his wife with coeds at bars.

I don't know how MSU would really justify this hire considering his history and what just happened with Tucker.

I also do not know why Urban would do this. He is getting paid $7million for a job with significantly less responsibility. MSU is going to be way behind the elites of the B1G and MSU. MSU is unlikely to have the NIL to truly compete.

It ain't gonna happen. But Michigan should still immediately ban him from campus and any interaction with the team. After all, he could have already secretly agreed to a contract but is spending the rest of the season scouting Michigan in his TV gig. He's probably got access to as much if not more info than a head coach would get due to the inside information that TV gets. (Isn't this how it works - turn unsubstantiated internet rumors into overblown knee-jerk reactions?)

To me it seems as if Urban might wait to see what happens at Texas A&M over Michigan State.

-Fertile Recruiting Area

- Lots of $$

-High Level Roster talent already in place

It’s their image. For whatever reason the media has a hard on for them. That’s fine. Send something actually worthy of being mad about. Not this grainy pick of whomever and then act like it’s the nail in the coffin. Um. Nah man. You haven’t demonstrated shit

Where ethics and laws don't matter Urban should always be at the top of any list. The end justifies the means when you're Green with envy.

Even if he does, I don't think these big name coaches of old will do well.

The transfer portal has been the true game changer. Talented 5 stars who got gobbled up by the SEC and Urban, or Dabo and don't play can go elsewhere now.  Instead of being underutilized on an SEC roster.

Bama isn't doing well.  Clemson is largely irrelevant this year.  The examples are legion.

Urban hasn't coached with a transfer portal.  He won't have the talent at his disposal like he used to.

It's also why I think they believe Harbaugh to be so dangerous.  He succeeded in the NFL, with his knowledge of free agency, it translates well to the portal.
