MSU Coach Search - Urban

Submitted by poseidon7902 on November 2nd, 2023 at 8:30 AM

I know at first it was laughable that MSU fans felt they had a chance to land Urban.  The fanaticism around his potential hire made watching from the outside enjoyable as RCMB splooges all over themselves anytime someone posts the GIF of urban changing from OSU red to MSU Green.  Lately though, the smoke around him has gotten thicker.  Camparoni is one of MSU's better trusted insiders and he's saying there's interest and it sounds like they are willing to pay him anything he wants to come.  I can't imagine Urban would want to come to East Lansing and have his legacy tarnished trying to scrape out wins against OSU, PSU, and UM.  Granted if the NCAA decides to make an example of Harbaugh, or he decides to run off to the NFL, the UM side of that could get interesting.  Do you see Urban taking the job at MSU?  USC/ND don't seem to be opening up any time soon and if he wants to coach again, I don't know if there's another big school who will be looking any time soon.

You lost me when you said Comparoni is a trusted inside source for MSU.  That guy is cringeworthy.  I will never forgive him for what he said MSU should do to Devin Gardner.

they talked about this on WTKA this morning, Sam had Vance Bedford on and Sam asked him flat out if Meyer would take the MSU job and Vance's answer was no. He said that where ever Meyer has gone as a college coach he has always had a QB already there and that there was already talent on the team. But the QB was the main one. Vance's other point was recruiting and Meyer wants to be somewhere where he can bring the level of players he needs and wants... MSU ain't that place...

The amount of work that Meyer would have to do to get MSU straightened out to be able to compete would give him PTSD from his time with the Jags...

Also how happy would MSU fans be when they find out that Scotty Hazelton would be their DC??? Meyer always keeps the DC from the previous staff where ever he has coached in college

The Urban brand is nothing like it used to be. Maybe his name still carries some punch in Ohio (apparently also in the OP's mind), but what 2025/2025 recruits ever saw him coach in person let alone would play for that jerk in the NIL era?

He's going to have better options. A&M could almost certainly come available. That is a better job, that can offer more money and is far easier to recruit to.

If Urban wants back into coaching, he will have better options than what is going to be a middle-of-the-pack program, at best, in the upcoming 14 team conference.

"it sounds like they are willing to pay him anything he wants"

They can be as willing as they want, but where's the money actually coming from?  It's public knowledge that "donors" didn't pay for 80%+ of Tucker's contract.  They haven't necessarily settled the issue of Tucker's buyout yet either, so there's potentially 8 figures of liability to still TBD.  MSU claimed poverty when they cancelled swimming, diving, and wrestling (and maybe a 4th sport I can't remember), and suddenly finding another $100 mil for Urban would undermine their ongoing Title 9 defenses in those cases.

If (a big IF) there is interest from Urban, then it's probably because MSU is the only FBS school with an open head coaching position right now and are the only ones talking to Meyer.  I still do not see this as realistic because the only ones reporting on it are MSU people.  As much as we rip on MSU, they are not that stupid to hire another controversial coach following one they just fired, and as much as we make fun of Meyer he is a smart man and will not open up the option of being the head coach of a program that is in the gutter right now.  He led a Utah team in a weak conference 20 years ago, then got hired at Florida with a load of talent, then went to OSU with even more talent.  He is a great coach with talent, but does he believe he can be a great coach with much lesser talent?  That is something that will definitely hover in his mind to not want to take the MSU job.

UM cheats!

Now let's hire the rapey guy that covers up domestic violence, cheats on his wife with coeds, creates program culture that allows Aaron Hernandez to shoot students on campus and become a mass murderer.

As a Buckeye, my belief re: Meyer is that he is at a point in his career that his ego will be the dominant driving force for any decisions that he makes. Yes, he recently said he isn't interested in coaching, but I don't think any OSU fans believe that. But after the Jax disaster, there is zero chance that he is going to take on a major rebuild. He took on huge challenges early on in his career at Bowling Green and Utah, his success at those stops is part of his "mystique".

Anyway, I have huge questions whether he can still be so successful in today's CFB landscape. He is a sledgehammer, tortures players into high performance, not sure in a portal world that he can do that.

So you just fire a coach for sexual harassment and you’re going to hire a married coach caught on video grinding on a young girl at a bar. Can it get any worse at that dumpster fire of a school.

Plot Twist:

Harbaugh ends up leaving for the NFL and Michigan lands Urban in the off season.

Oh my, the exploding heads on 11w and rcmb. The reading would be glorious.

The last time USC was looking for a football coach President Carol Folt said she would never hire Urban.  Highly doubt that has changed given what has transpired since with Urban.  And I think we can agree that the job is below even him.

Said it before, will say it again: I want no part of Urban Meyer at MSU. I don't care if he is an automatic 9-win season simply by dint of showing up on the sidelines (I don't think he is, but OK). He's not the guy for this position at this time.

Won’t happen.  MSU is a reclamation process, awful roster, challenging recruiting base, dysfunctional AD and opponent to OSU.  He has better options in far better recruiting grounds if he really wants to coach and wants to pressure an AD into change - TAMU, USC, UCLA, LSU.
