Let's talk football again! What do you want to see from the offense vs. Penn State?

Submitted by NonAlumFan on November 10th, 2023 at 9:30 AM

Isaiah Hole has mentioned for a few weeks that the offense has been holding things back until they play Penn State. I think we could see QB/RB/WR packages for Orji, Semaj Morgan lined up in a set with Roman Wilson, and consistent deep shots that we haven't yet seen. What special looks do you think we will (or want to) see from the offense?

I know there's been concern about the run game and lack of effectiveness, but I think even if PSU loads up to stop the run the only way I see PSU winning this game is with turnovers. I have faith when the pocket is kept mostly clean JJ can effectively read the field. The only way PSU wins this is if the OTs play horrendously against PSUs good DEs, or Diaz is able to effectively bring pressure and forces JJ into TCU type ints. Flashbacks to Ryan Hayes giving up a critical 4th quarter sack/fumble that almost lost that 2021 PSU game. If Henderson gets beat consistently then the offense is in trouble. If the OTs perform even average then I think the offense will be able to consistently work its way downfield in chunks

Big plays against a good defense, particularly at least one rushing and one passing.

Blake Corum filling up his highlight reel would be great considering they have been saving him for the back half of the season. Edwards earning a TD on his own in non-garbage time would be great too. Ideally, that would be rushing, but if they get him more involved as a WR (even with a jet sweep), that would be good.

I'd also like to see a pass over the top of the defense.

Do these things and all of college football is on alert.

I want to see our run game take off in a way that no one was expecting at this point. That doesn't mean we have to rip off 13 play drives that are all runs and go for 400 rushing yards. But I expect JJ to have actual read options that allow him to keep the ball early in the game that really open the holes in the middle for Corum.

I hope to see Mullings healthy enough to be the true #2 back who can pound it in a softened up middle, and allow Edwards to be used more in the slot or as a receiving threat in a 2 back formation, kind of like we were supposed to see last week, I thought. They certainly tried and he did have that one big catch early on.

I expect we'll see more Morgan to threaten the edge as well. I just hope it isn't an obvious Calvin Bell Special whenever he's on the field and it gets snuffed out each time for a TFL.

I think lots of people at large think itll be a slog because Michigans offense has been perhaps unexciting at times this season, but in recent years we've definitely opened up the playbook for OSU 1st and PSU 2nd.

I think there's gonna be some weird run game things that make the run offense look better than it has all season. If the running backs are finding room, I don't see Penn State winning this without lots of turnovers or special teams plays

5-8 JJ keeps

More tight-end passing concepts

Donovan and Corus on the field at the same time, more Donovan motioning into the WR position

Thaw returning punts

I actually hope they save the Corum + Edwards packages for OSU. It would be very destabilizing (for OSU) if we unveil jet sweeps w/ Edwards in that game. After establishing that, Edwards pre-snap motion could be used to prevent OSU from stacking the box (ie open up lanes for Corum) and it’d open up the intermediate/deep passing game. Could be a great surprise factor.

There has been a lot of talk about JJ being rusty vs Purdue. However, that also was the first game where we used a non-vanilla scheme (I suspect Harbaugh, etc do that to limit tape for the big games). This week I’m wondering if we open up the playbook even more vs a very good PSU defense, and if so, if the offense executes at a higher level.

The weather looks good - dry and seasonable temperatures - almost “nice / warm” for early November.  Not that the weather matters - but, the projected forecast would indicate the entire playbook should be available and I like that.

On offense - it’s really “what will PSU / Diaz do?”   Will they put 9 or 10 in the box to take away the run?  If so, how available will the #1 receiver target be -  and, can JJ hit them?

My hope / wish is - the team plays to their potential.  If they do - I think the result will make certain things very clear.

Since I have Loveland in my FanDuel LU, an 8/100/2 line from him would be great. Add in a rushing TD on one of those TE runs that Georgia does, just to give those folks in CBus something to think about... That would be snazzy. Seriously, I hope we put this one on ice quickly with our standard stuff and save the trickery for OSU and the CFP.

I like the motion and misdirection presnap and hopefully not a lot of leakers on passing downs.  Im sure we will see max protection to slow the Edge pressure but we know Penn Stae D will get some playes.  We just can’t have free rushers on Jj.
Coach Bedford mentioned the need for receivers to get separation on Safeties.
Take care of the ball and be patient. The game will end with Michigan on top.

I want them to show the full breadth of the rushing offense as they have it.  It's felt at times like they are holding back because they can but I have to believe they have tricks up their sleeves and it'll be interesting to see what they look like.

I'd love to see a few packages and meaningful snaps with Orji in there. That would be a big new wrinkle. One of the keys is to run for at least 175 yds but the OL has to win in the trenches.

JJ doing RPO plays is another. It will be up to PSU to pick their poison. They will have to commit to either stop the run or JJ's passing and leaning the pocket ability. PSU will not be able to do both.

I wanna see our linemen quote Bubba Paris, repeatedly.

"That’s right. It’s an off-tackle play. It’s coming right over you. And there’s not a thing you can do about it.”

And, I want to see Edwards score (at least) three touchdowns - one running, one receiving and one passing.

simply this:  establish a reliable run like we had last year, recognizing that if they are going to have +1 in the box that we'll 'throw' them out of it until it's even up.

Execution.  I do not think this is the week that the run game gets back into form because Penn State is really excellent in that area, so you're going to need to run to keep them honest, but the passing game is going to need to blend short stuff with catch and runs and explosives.  I'd like to see more where Donovan can make plays in space, maybe motioning him out wide.

I'd also like to see them pass more with Bredeson in the game (perhaps as an additional blocker to buy JJ time) to reverse tendencies.

Another vote for touchdowns.

I want to see touchdowns for JJ, Corum, Wilson, Johnson, Edwards, Loveland; touchdowns for everybody on Michigan's offense and absolutely no touchdowns for PSU. Aside from that, keep moving the chains, run the ball well and for JJ to run a masterpiece of an offense with no turnovers.

Respectfully, if what you are referring to is.. the 3’s and 4’s getting reps in the fourth quarter - and, you hope to see that tomorrow - I’m in 100% agreement.

I believe game reps are the best form of experience and invaluable.  And, getting them on the road, in a hostile environment is something that cannot be replicated in practice.  The lessons learned from game reps are very insightful.

I want to see S. Morgan with some deep bombs from JJ,  lots of focus will be on Roman. Also would love to see JJ feed the tight ends, run some screens for Edward and Corum and some zone reads.

I actually don’t think we’ll need a crazy set of packages to beat them. I imagine they’ll put King on Wilson and we’ll wind up throwing a lot to AJ and Loveland. I also think Donovan will be involved a lot in the passing game tomorrow. All of that, plus JJs legs should be enough.

I think Harbaugh has been holding back the running game all season up to this point.  I suspect there will be a few running plays we haven't seen this year and they will break for 10 plus on multiple occasions.  Harbaugh hasn't had to rely on the running game, so he hasn't revealed a whole lot about it.  Balanced attack.  Lots of points.

IMO, PSU comes out chucking it a la BGSU. It’s really their only hope. Allar just needs to get lucky a few times or get some home cooking DPIs to make this tighter than it needs to be.

Domination.  At this point I want us to hold nothing back and just embarrass teams.  Sportsmanship be damned.  Don't take our foot off the pedal until the clock hits zero.

For example in the UFR Brian said we could have ran outside and totally exploited Purdue's scheme.  Should have done that.

No, Michigan is the better team we dont need trickery.

Run your offense...take care of the football and I can see a few different paths to victory.

Penn State on the other hand needs to bring the kitchen sink, hope we make mistakes and it still may not be enough.
