The phrase is rooted in African American Vernacular English (AAVE), or Black speech separate from standard English. As early as the 1900s, "to cap" meant to brag, exaggerate or lie about something, according to Dictionary.com.

Additionally, "no cap" can be used to describe something that has no limit. In the "Green’s Dictionary of Slang" in the 1940s, "to cap" meant "to surpass." Therefore, "cap" could be defined as the "top" or "upper limit", according to Dictionary.com.

'cap' is also gangster slang for a bullet or a shot.  as in 'ima gonna put a cap in yo' ass', meaning, 'i'm going to shoot you'

does that put some 'cool' back in it?

bonus points:  you will be shot with his 'gat' (rhymes with 'cat'), and short for gatling gun, the 1800's first multi-barrel/multi-shot weapon.  seen below with the outlaw josey wales doing a test-shoot.  with his gat.  putting lots of caps in lots of asses.

It'd be nice if it was him saying it, but I'll take it. Still, he's not one of the guys on D I'm particularly worried about jumping ship for a year.

Its probably in his best interest to stay, anyway. Depending on where he goes, he may have to learn a completely different defense, and he's projected right now in many circles as the first corner off the board in the 2025 draft.

Sure, he could go somewhere else like Alabama and make more money than he could at Michigan. But then he's learning a whole new system for just one year, and those transition costs could cost him draft capital and cause him to fall down the draft board next year. Falling even 5-10 spots can cost you millions.

Or he could stay at Michigan, stay in virtually the same system he's already been in for the last two years, just keep doing what he's been doing, and head off to the league after next season as the #1 corner taken in the draft.

Its also one of those things where other programs selling him on the idea of winning a national championship doesn't carry as much weight as it normally would. Will's response could simply be "That's great. I've ALREADY WON a national championship. What else do you have to offer?" If all they have to offer is money, I'd caution him about wanting more money now in the short term, possibly at the expense of losing a lot more money in the long term.

Its embarrassing that its a known fact that kids can make more money at even a school like Alabama who supposedly has terrible NIL too.

This MUST change or Michigan will continue to be targeted. At least do what ND is doing pay your players but don't discuss it.

Michigan only needs to have a match mentality because you're still Michigan so your degree is tops and now that we won a national title we offer that too.

Doesn't seem like Michigan is having an issue paying its current roster. Guys like Keegan, Zinter and Corum have dropped subtle hints in the past that they were/are making really good money at Michigan.

Where Michigan has an issue (and it seems very much to be a conscious choice) is to not pay recruits. They're banking on finding guys willing to bet on themselves in the hope that the money will come later. Which is fine. If that's what you want to do as a program then so be it.

You just need to be ready to have the door slammed in your face by most every blue-chip recruit out there.

https://www.on3.com/nil/rankings/player/college/football/Take this for what it is worth, but On3 has an NIL ranking list on their website and lists Johnson valuation at $763,000 and that is #34. To put it in perspective, Downs left Alabama and one of the reasons was wanting more NIL. Downs is listed as #19 with a valuation of $906,000.

I don't pretend to know exactly what goes into their valuations but in Johnson's case, is it worth it to uproot everything and move to a new environment for say $143,000 in valuation which would equal Downs?

I'm guessing that Johnson has a very healthy NIL deal, and he could perhaps hit the portal and make a little bit more, but that little bit isn't enough to offset the relationships and environment he already has.

It felt like a lot of the talk about him leaving was opposing fanbases trying to talk it into existence, but good to see that publicly discussed.

Also, I know everyone is talking about the 25th as a cut-off but then there's spring ball portal time, so at this point getting worked up about anyone possibly leaving is a year-long process.

I think the thing is key guys who stick around for the 30 day period are unlikely to jump ship during the spring period.

If you stuck around despite Harbaugh, Herbert, Minter, Elston, and Clinkscale leaving and you have a key role on the team, you probably aren't leaving in April.

What we will have for sure is playing time transfers.  Guys who go through spring practice and are buried on the depth chart or like Sabb want to go somewhere that they'll play a more central role.  But that's something every team has to deal with.  What we're not likely to have in the April window is continued transition costs.

Absolutely.  I fully expect some guys to shake out during the post-spring period due to playing time concerns, but I'm more just pointing out that even after 2/25 there will likely still be some defections (and likely some additions as well).

Right now UM (and I guess UCLA) are the two schools with open cupboards for transfers so the focus is on them, but once that's done they'll just be one of 132 other schools.
