Is this guy a reliable source? I’m not on the twittersphere, but I can’t say I’ve heard of him.

Also, is an NFL owner going to care about a $33 million buyout in two years? I mean, sure, they’d rather not have to pay it, but these guys have such deep pockets, and are desperate and greedy enough to win that if they want Harbaugh bad enough, I feel like there are some owners out there who would say “fuck it I’m paying the buyout, and we’ll go get him anyway.”

Not to throw a ball bearing into the gears but Coach needs to stop and think about whether he'd have as much fun coaching in the NFL as he does living in his "home town", next to family, coaching the kids at M.

Sure, the NCAA and Teenieweenie are obnoxious and Warde is Warde, but (in a few days) JH is a 60 year old guy who coaches kids who absolutely love and respect him. Hey Coach? The NFL offers owners and GMs who micromanage like crazy and players with outsized egos. Think it through ...

Prediction? He stays @ M.

And it won't.  By the time they get around to announce anything about it, signgate rules will have been changed to allow team-sponsored scouting.  The results will be quietly dropped off a cliff.  The whole cheeseburger thing is already antiquated and out of touch.  It too will be quietly thrown overboard without discussion.

Only hurdle is Harbaugh putting into writing that he won’t explore a NFL job this cycle.

Oh, is that all?

Sounds fake, tbh. What kind of nonsense contract clause is that? That's what the buyout is for.

It's up in the air, Jim is gone if an NFL team agrees to his terms and offers him a contract. Not sure how much control he is going to want in the front office. If no NFL team meets his demands he will be back at UM. I think it's more likely he goes to the NFL but not a sure thing. Agree that this looks like UM saving face in case he leaves. Either way I don't see this situation being resolved anytime soon.

also, i don't know if it's the wording or the idea here, but does this strike anyone else as odd?

contracts often have buyout clauses, among other conditions.  is this tweet suggesting that they're having trouble coming up with an agreeable buyout clause?

if harbaugh was intent on coaching at Michigan, putting a condition in the contract that he won't pursue an nfl job shoudn't be difficult - either the buyout is HUGE in the first 12 months of the contract, or a condition is added that he won't pursue an NFL job in the 2024 cycle.

seems to me that if you're trying to get him to sign a 5yr extension, the buyout should be huge the first two years, then get gradually smaller.  but i'm certainly no expert here.

At this point why would Harbaugh be in a rush to sign a new contract? We know he likes to explore NFL options and it's not like UM is going to hire someone else unless he leaves. Jim holds all the cards.

at some point his recruiting staff must have made clear to him that the appearance of instability and/or uncertainty has a negative impact on recruiting.  whether it hasn't registered with him, or whether he doesn't care, I guess we'll never know.  but being aware, and caring, would answer your question about any sense of urgency he might (or might not) feel.

IIRC, his current contract runs through the end of the 2025 season/post-season.  If i'm a recruit thinking of signing into the 2024 recruiting class and want to play for Coach Harbaugh, and see that he's declined to sign a 5yr extension, it would give me pause.

This leak is the administration putting pressure on Harbaugh to sign. They don’t see it as much of a risk as they Sherrone in their back pocket to step in to fill Harbaugh’s shoes if he leaves.

Michigan understandably wants some stability and Harbaugh understandably wants the liberty to leave if the right opportunity presents itself.

What’s that old saying ? “ I’ll believe it when I see it “ … I’ll believe it when I see the press conference announcement of the new contract … these so called insiders know half of what they think they know
