OT - Go Nebraska! Beat the Buffs

Submitted by trueblue262 on September 6th, 2023 at 9:16 AM

I'm sure there are others feeling the same way, but the last few days of Primetime interviews and press conferences has been a bit much. The way he handled the transition in Boulder, theres no possible way that he didnt think there were going to be some "non believers". Going through his press conference and not taking questions from media people that "doubted" him?? telling everybody he has receipts......I know its unlikely , but I hope Nebraska beats their ass this week just so we dont have to go through another week of this crap. Anybody else out there sick of the "prime theatre"?

Colorado has about 80 new players on their roster this year.  I don't think TCU had a great understanding of how to scheme for a team that had virtually no video on file.  It will be a lot easier to create a game plan as teams start to understand Colorado's strengths and weaknesses.  TCU is down from last year, and I don't mean to minimize the significance of CU's victory, but I foresee issues for them as they go up against good competitors who have the information to create a game plan against them.

This is how I feel.  Seems like people are crowning Deion already and thinking Colorado just won the super bowl.  Nah.  They performed really well against a team on the decline.   They are going to play a crappy Nebraska team next.  Hit me back after they play Oregon and USC and we will have a true measuring stick of how good they are.

FWIW I think they will be bowl eligible and maybe even 8-9 wins which is a huge turn around.  But they need to quit all the heisman talk, etc.

I love what's happening at Colorado - it's great for the sport.  Colorado has been down for a decade now and it's a fun team to have back in the picture.

We need more Deion's and less Dabo's, in my opinion.

This is the epitome of the issue with Coach Prime haters and the "down in fronts". It completely validates why Coach Prime feels the need to say the things he does.

A lame ass coach like Lane Kiffin or Mike Gundy goes off at the mouth, and it's just what a program needs, and it shows "intensity", and they fail upward.

Deon goes off, and it's him being uppity or a loudmouth.

I wonder what the difference is between them 🤔

I'm glad Deon is able to expose the hypocrisy of the college football ol' boy network.

Did you really go there? This has nothing to do with race. It has to due to being humble and winning with grace. When my son was growing up, I showed him videos of Barry Sanders scoring touchdowns and handing the ball to the ref. There were no gyrations, no taunting, no me-me-me, I-I-I, look how great I am. I taught my children to be humble. Build others up. Set up your teammates for success on the field or court. Self-promotion and bragging about yourself is just empty.

When I was growing up as a Detroit sports fan, we were blessed with such fantastic examples of humbleness from all 4 major sports teams: Alan Trammell, Barry Sanders, Joe Dumars and Steve Yzerman. There are many others - Whitaker, Kaline, Gates Brown, etc. You can be intense without being overbearing. Look at Chris Spielman or Kirk Gibson.

That's good for you and glad you're not seeing it as a race/culture thing.

But to ignore the fact that A LOT of people are criticizing Deon for doing the same thing as some of his contemporaries, is simply unrealistic.

OP's felt the need to create a post to effectively say "I don't like this coach acting up, and he needs to be put in his place", specifically one that is part of a 10.2% minority in the D1 ranks.

So yeah, if you look OP's language, and at the objective differentiator between Deon and 90% of other coaches, one thing definitely jumps out.

And some people grew up watching the Miami teams of the 80s and Bulls of the 90s win championships and show a different kind of attitude and celebration. Some people gravitate toward humility and sacrifice and others are attracted to "swagger" or whatever we may call it.

Colorado has been humble enough to let its opponents beat them a lot before Deion arrived. Maybe he wants to demonstrate playing with purpose and assertiveness. Maybe he wants to teach his kids to set high expectations. Maybe he is just being himself. Either way, the rhetoric around change is almost always offensive to many.

No one outside of Oklahoma or whoever is a fan of the current Lane Kiffin team ever likes Mike Gundy or Lane Kiffin. We all know (especially Kiffin) they are both high on the intolerable douche spectrum.  But with that said, so is Deon, and he also calls himself Coach Prime, which is kind of pathetic and childish, no matter how great a player he was. I do believe that once you step into the ranks of coaching a little humility goes a long way, because eventually your team will get their ass kicked and it will be said coaches fault.

Can you imagine if Tom Brady got into coaching and called himself #CoachGOAT and wore shirts of it and shit? I would think it’s absolutely ridiculous and my view of Brady would greatly diminish as he would appear as a huge arrogant Douche.

It’s clear based on your post that you think all Deon hate is due to him belong black. This is because you still have a mindset that projects your own insecurities onto people who don’t actually care about skin color like you clearly do. They care about the perceived character of the man himself.

Building confidence is a good thing as Deon does very well, but so is a dose of humility, which Deon clearly sucks at. I think Harbaugh, and honestly many others in the coaching world are great at being humble and building confidence within their team culture. Honestly, I believe the staff at UM as a whole is great at this, and many of these coaches I have the upmost respect for happen to be black as well (Hart, Moore, Clinkscale), but they aren’t arrogant douchebags like Deon, and I think most, wouldn’t care if they were black or white, as you obviously do.

All that said, Deon seems to be a good coach, at assembling staff, recruiting, probably x’s and o’s, and his way of motivating might work for a while. But, in my opinion, it probably has about a 5 year shelf life in this day in college football. This isn’t Miami on the 80’s and early 90’s.

Sure, race absolutely does play a role, but let's not forget that Deion loudly and unabashedly pushed out most of the CU players he inherited so he could bring in more transfers, at one point saying it was like replacing old luggage with Louis Vuitton. You can argue (with some justification) that every coach pushes out non-performing players to some extent & that the difference is that Deion is just more blatant about it, but I also don't think you should be surprised with that candor generating a backlash.

SalvatoreQuattro

September 6th, 2023 at 8:56 PM ^

Does it? Spurrier was doing the same thing decades ago and drew controversy for doing so. Spurrier won which shut means his critics had to keep silent.

If Deion wins he will become a legend. If he fails he becomes a clown.

Deion understands what he is doing. This is deliberate. This is a guy who for 30 years has played a character and backed it up with his play and now coaching.

Ironically, your reference to Coach Prime haters and the 'down in fronts' overlaps in an unexpected way.

Prime does and says brash things to fit an old cultural fashion (in effect, saying "Look how bold I am!"), and using those who object (calling out those who complained) to reinforce that point.

People stand throughout a game to fit a relatively new cultural fashion ("Look how much I support my team!"), and using those who object ("the 'down in fronts'") to reinforce that point.

Blue Vet

Yeah, I get it. I understand the downvotes. None of us like to think we follow a fashion—which may be the major cultural fashion right now.

If it helps, let's call it a cultural impulse.

• Tattoos used to be rare and now they're normal, and in another turn of the wheel, they might be culturally obligatory OR seen as silly.

• Basketball shorts used to be short, then short b'ball shorts came to be seen as laughable, and possibly in another turn of the wheel, they'll be seen as hyper athletic.

• Students didn't used to stand throughout a game and now they do, and in another turn of the wheel, your children or grandchildren might be teasing us for doing what they deem a silly thing.

I root for Big Ten teams (except typically MSU and OSU) in their out of conference games. Coach Prime doesn't factor into the equation. I expect most college football coaches are egomaniacs, Prime just doesn't try to disguise it.

I don't care who wins that game.  I hope it is a good game though because it is on my agenda on Saturday for sure.  If I had to root for somebody it would be Nebraska because they are going to have some "highs" and "lows" this year and I would rather they have a "high" of beating Colorado than one of upsetting Michigan.

Get over it, man. This is who Deion Sanders is, but at least so far, he's walked the walk and backed the talk and the hype up.

I admit I was skeptical that he would have things turned around this quickly, and I'm not ready to say they are contending for the Pac-12 yet. They have a two week buzzsaw coming up between playing @ Oregon on 9/23 and then USC at home on 9/30, so we are going to learn A LOT about Colorado by the time September is done. But they should be making a bowl game this year, in my opinion, and that by itself is a massive improvement from where Colorado was this time nine months ago. Even if they just get to six wins, Deion deserves some praise for that, considering the dumpster fire Colorado was before he got there.

I don't really think Nebraska has much hope. Maybe Nebraska has a better defense than TCU, but we know their offense is putrid. So even if Nebraska gets a few stops early on and keeps the game somewhat close, I have a very hard time seeing them keep up on the scoreboard. Sam Webb put it best yesterday. "Nebraska's offense last week set the forward pass back at least a hundred years."

Lastly, if you're tired of the "prime theatre," I'm sorry to tell you that this is just the beginning. He's going to recruit extremely well, and if they continue to make noise this season, he is going to absolutely clean up the recruiting trail. Maybe end up getting some guys Michigan was in on as well. He's not going away.

The comment was that that person read the OP as a racist "dog whistle".  I read the same OP and didn't detect any implied racism (I won't speak about others here, but I probably am not the only one).  It may be possible that the poster is seeing/interpreting something that isn’t actually present.

I saw an example of this behavior firsthand back in my freshman year at UM:

There is a well-known & memed video game called Zero Wing that came out in the late 80s/ early 90s.  It became a meme due to the humorous errors in the English translations of some of the action scenes.  Many years later, I was living in the dorms in a floor of mostly engineers.  Two of them had pasted their room door with photos of this game scene among other interesting items (at one point their door was nothing but a wall of empty off-brand Cheeze It boxes... but that's a story for another time).  At some point some members of DAAP/BAMN were walking the hall and noticed.  The two guys were in the room (mine was a few doors down so I could hear the exchange) and the student activists proceeded to berate the guys and accuse them of posting racist material.  They explained the background of the game/meme and that this was lampooning the poor quality of work by this video game company (they were EECS guys) and that any multinational company marketing in the US (and other English speaking locales) should have done better - which has nothing to do with race/ethnicity.  I didn't hear how the exchange ended, but this was a case when people wanted to find an issue of racism that wasn't actually there.

We don't yet know if Deion Sanders is a good football coach, but we do know that he is an exceptionally accomplished athlete and an authentic individual.  Do we know any other CFB coach who is accomplished on the field, shows his true self, and doesn't really care what the rest of the world thinks?

My crystal ball says the NCAA will be writing new rules in response to Deion's innovative approaches.

he is an exceptionally accomplished athlete and an authentic individual.

Is he, though? Sure, he can back up his talk, but that doesn't make him "authentic" as a person. I think his public persona is just that - a persona. He amplifies things to be intentionally controversial and provocative, plays to the crowd, makes certain statements to achieve an outcome. More than authentic, I think he's actually quite cunning and knows how to craft the public's perception of him.

I wouldn't call that "authentic."

WestQuad

September 6th, 2023 at 1:45 PM ^

I don't know.  I think he's as authentic as anyone else.  He branded himself "Prime Time" when he was an underclassman in college. The dude is a showboat to his core.

My third kid didn't/doesn't get enough attention.  When they were little if one of the other kids did something naughty and got scolded.  My son would immediately do what the bad kid did.  He wanted the attention.   To this day he does this.  It is his soul.  Whatever it takes for attention.   I'm sure Deion has some similar sociopathy.

I hated Deion's braggadocio when he was in college, but the dude brought it and I have a lot of respect for him. I think it is a great story that Deion is doing well.  I'd rather Deion did well rather than Scott Frost, Saban, Urban, or Dabo.

September 6th, 2023 at 1:49 PM ^

You haven't explained why he isn't authentic, just pointed out a bunch of things about him that have nothing to do with whether someone is authentic or not.

My point is if he's an entertainer, that doesn't make him less authentic.  If you followed Deipn Sanders' career and you can youtube his school days, he was always like that.  He hasn't changed.  As a kid, he was like this and as an adult he's like this.  That's authentically who he is, a crowd pleaser who also works his ass off and creates success wherever he goes.

when he was on the cowboys because I'm a decent human being who hates the cowboys, I hated him too. But I was a fan of him otherwise and I was following him at JSU and rooting for him - even when he got to Colorado. I think he was honest and up front with the cuts he made but I wasn't a fan of that - made me from a Prime fan to a neutral. Not rooting against him but hope that sorta thing isn't normalized.

So...no dog in this one. Looking forward to the game. I'll always appreciate CU for that 62-36 game in 2001(?)

I hear you - and to be honest, I don't think college sports have been amateur for a very long time. The professionalization of youth sports is a problem as well.

But, despite the fact it used to be used as a way to not pay players, "student-athlete" does describe what a college athlete is. Yes, they're professionals. And yes, Prime didn't keep them their ability to go to school at CU. But, a) NIL isn't a salary. They SHOULD get paid, as Harbaugh says. And, as is currently required and allowed, they SHOULD be students in good standing and should not lose their spot at the U over football decisions.

But somehow the mass turnover just still feels like it's not respecting their situation enough. The portal does exist (and is a good thing). But I just am not yet square with this amount of turnover. I can talk myself into it but it sits wrong with me.

Nobody lost their scholarship.  If playing football is more important to them than getting an education, that's why they transferred.

If the education was more important they would stay and maybe join the rugby team.

Any coach has the responsibility to cut players who aren't good enough.  Deion Sanders did exactly what he was paid to do.

My thoughts are always pretty simplistic:

1. Rebuilding program gets disproportionate media attention.

2. Future UM opponent plays program with disproportionate media attention.

3. Root for future UM opponent so that UM beating of said opponent gets disproportionate weighting in national attention.

4. 1 through 3 are null and void where future UM opponent is OSU or MSU.

Some of us don't mind the swag. It's the humiliating of returning players, running off dozens of them, etc. Junction Boys style - FWIW Bear Bryant himself said he later regretted it, and he would have quit.
Some of us simply don't want that to be taken as the model for success and expectations which other, more humane are measured against.

BlueTimesTwo

September 6th, 2023 at 12:14 PM ^

I think this is my biggest concern.  Deion has always been brash and outspoken, and it has served him well.  But if bringing in 88 new players sets the stage for a massive turnaround, then we are going to see more teams just clean house when a coach comes in.  While the portal has caused a lot more player movement in general, the scale of it at CU does really make it clear that this is a professional sport and even the fig leaf of amateurism from the past is gone.

A lot of people who have disdain for Deion's methods also probably felt the same way about Al Davis and his "Just Win Baby" approach to football.

Meh.

I mean, our team is coached by Jim freaking Harbaugh, so if there's a fanbase that should be sympathetic to what's it's like having to wade through a thousand navel-gazingly vapid hot take thinkpieces about the impact of your coach on college football, it's us.

Nah, I like Coach Prime. He's a breath of fresh air in the endless monotony of banal coachspeak. He's kinda like Harbaugh circa 2007.

Having said that, I don't particularly care who wins this game.
