I think this was a trial balloon - get the idea out there then gauge the backlash while no question was pending. Re-raise it if the support seems to be there, without an embarassing loss or worse, a Board reversal after a public backlash.
Plus, all the damage to the brand and now we can't say 'just a rogue fanboy analyst,' so more damage.
It strengthens the Head Coach responsibility claim for NCAA. I think UM needed to take the L from the B1G to argue "time served" for JH and save next season.
Maybe they (UM) are getting in front of the NCAA on this issue, like with the cheeseburger suspension. Maybe a conference-imposed suspension on Connorgate will carry more sway with NCAA than the self-imposed earlier one.
I hope they got more from the deal, like Tony's resignation.
Dislike the "rolled over and played Dead" characterizzation in the post title. YMMV. There are all sorts of reasons beyond the merits to just nip this thing in the bud.
No further JH sanction from the B1G would be one. B1G championship and CFP/Bowl game are not at risk.
A quid pro quo for a "completely unrelated"/ "pursue other opportunities" resignation by Tony once the season concludes would be another.
An agreement to stop digging now that B1G has its pound of flesh would be another (see whispers re some other coach something in earlier thread comments)
