In-N-Out Burger vs. Five Guys? Popeye's vs. Chick-fil-A?

Submitted by 1989 UM GRAD on January 31st, 2021 at 8:09 AM

The  Charbonnet transfer thread below got off on a tangent re: In-N-Out Burger.

Got me to thinking about the on-going debates re: burger and chicken spots.  I haven't seen a thread addressing this vital issue, so my apologies if this is a redundant topic.

I personally find almost all of them to be overrated.  Most are just slight variations on the burger or chicken theme...with nothing really special to distinguish one brand over another.

What's the allure of Chick-fil-A?  The chicken is fine...but nothing special.  The waffle fries are likewise just meh.  We drove past their new location at 8 Mile/Haggerty and there were two lines of cars about 15/20 deep.

Give me a local slider joint like Hunter House over any of the national chains...and I've had some really tasty hand-made chicken tenders at various local restaurants.

What say you about this important topic?

In-N-Out?  Five Guys?  White Castle?  Whataburger?  Culver's?  Red Robin?  Shake Shack?

Chick-fil-A?  Popeyes?  KFC?  Buffalo Wild Wings?  Gus's?

Chick-fil-A over Popeyes by a good margin. Five guys meh. Whataburger is good but expensive. Never had an In-N- Out burger. Do I need to put that in my bucket list?

Bucket list? No.

I&O has a solid standard burger. Better than Whataburger’s regular burger. Whataburger’s specialty burgers are far better than any burger at I&O. I like Whataburger’s fries better, and I&O’s shakes are far superior.

The draw, as mentioned above, of I&O is good quality at a very cheap price. But, it is a very standard burger.

I have eaten at lots of different In-N-Out locations and quite a few Five Guys.  I have noticed that with these fresh beef hamburger joints, the skill of the folks flipping the burger makes a huge difference.  Sometimes the burgers are great, other times they are overcooked or far too greasy.  Having said that In-N-Out wins on price.

I agree that Five Guys fries portions are absurd, and way overpriced.

In the time of $5 whole rotisserie chicken I don't really eat fast food chicken anymore.  Chicken Chicken, wood roasted Caribbean chicken, in Burlingame CA was the best until they closed after a fire several years ago.

Chik Fil A is merely okay. ( the breakfast is the best thing on the menu)

Popeyes is good , but the service is absolutely terrible , and location doesn’t seem to matter , it’s horrible everywhere I’ve been

The best fast food chicken is a place called Bojangles  and it’s not close, but sadly they do not venture this far north !

In n out & Chic Fil A

The secret menu and the crisp produce on the burgers, the sauces make chic fil a.  Also the commitment to community impact through how they support local causes schools organizations and crisis.

Culver's 100%. Their double deluxe is probably the best burger I've ever had.  Add fried cheese curds makes that meal even better.  They also have really good fries and fabulous custard.

For chicken I'm a chick fil-a guy because it's close to me.

I used to get Red Robin, but their quality wained and it seemed really greasy.

I had the memphis burger at cheesecake factory a couple of times and that's the only burger that has rivaled the double deluxe.

I have a weakness for the greasy cheeseburgers of The Varsity in Atlanta. Maybe they're not the healthiest or best burgers around, but almost any time I'm in Atlanta I make a pilgrimage.

Good fries there, too.

Haven't had In-N-Out in years but love their food. Really dislike 5 Guys.

I haven't ever had Popeyes (though heard really good things) but Chik-Fil-A is fantastic. Everything you hear about their customer service has been true at the handful of locations I've visited.

Never understood Chick-Fil-A.

Its a solid sandwich with decent waffle fries.

Now why is the line 10 cars deep at all times of the day? And I’m in a town where they are usually no more than a mile apart, so it’s not like it’s the only one. It’s even more annoying when you date someone who gets it at least 3x per week for dinner/lunch.

Big Gus's fan!  Super crispy with just enough heat.  Two wings and a small fry (kind of just plan fries but when they are fresh in the brown bag I am all in).  Bonus, the dog gets the piece of wonder bread covered in chicken grease.

Side-note:  Anybody in Western Michigan remember Hot N' Now?  It was like a generic McDonalds and was crazy cheap.  My Grandparents always took us there when we wanted McDonalds.

In-N-Out over 5 Guys for me. 5 Guys and Jack-in-the-box are 2 burger places I will not go to. Both made me sick more than once. You know what they say, make me vomit once, shame on you. Make me vomit twice, shame on me. 5 Guys is too greasy and peppery for me.
I’ll usually just grab a Carl’s Jr. burger when I want a burger. They aren’t quite as good as in-n-out, but I don’t have to wait in line for a half hour. Big Carl is basically a Big Mac without that superfluous middle bun. Famous Star and Super Star give you that classic American burger, and they’ve got the western bacon to serve as a change of pace when you’re hankering ferda bacon, bbq sauce and onion rings on your burger.

I’ve never had an In n Out burger, but can tell you that you go to 5 Guys for the fries, not the burgers.

Chick Fil A.  Fried chicken sandwich, shakes (peach in summer, peppermint around Xmas), & they need to bring back the carrot salad.

I don't understand the appeal of In-N-Out Burger.  The burgers are ok but super sloppy, and the fries are trash.  And regardless of the day and time, there's ALWAYS a ridiculous line .  I dunno, people like what they like I guess.

My dad and my daughter are gay--I don't do Chick-fil-A. Five guys needs an interior decorator, but a straight-up burger deluxe there satisfies the craving now and then. In the South we also have Burger Phi, which to me is superior to any of them and more fun.

1a. If drunk or stoned, White Castle, always WC.

1b. Inand Out - but just barely, they have gone somewhat downhill since then patriarch died and they expanded beyond southern cal/L.A. when they managed/grew all their own ingredients. Also assumes you finish the fried within 5 minutes, before they turn to cardboard.

2. Five Guys

3. Culver's

1. Popeyes, hands down, better chicken sandwich, to start, but also has in hand easily the best chain fried chicken, not to mention killer red beans and rice, biscuits....not to mention dinner crazy spicy atmosphere.

2. If in any way inebriated, revert to 1a. above.

X. Chick-fil-A, ish, uninteresting food, never understood the allure.

Completely echo sentiment about local joints over chains, though white castle and popeyes get extra character points for nearly always providing an eyebrow-raising bit if entertainment during a visit, often a lot more.

Discussing national fast food chains & saying you like some local bar better is silly. It’s like discussing the Sizzler & saying you prefer Tom Colicchio’s latest steak house. No shit. It’s not much of a statement.

That being said, I do think the devotion some people have for Brand A over Brand B fast food is hard to understand. It’s fast food. Having a preference is fine, but going significantly out of your way or waiting in a long line doesn’t make sense to me.

Agreed, but I have to share. There’s this little bar in a run down town about 30 min from me. Their burger is like nothing I’ve ever had before good. I asked her about it (they were cooking it right behind the bar) and she said the secret is their griddle. It’s the same griddle they’ve used for like 60 years and is seasoned, never cleaned with soap and water. I don’t know if that was b.s or not about why they were so good. Anyone else heard of something like this?

I don't live on the West Coast and haven't been to an In N' Out during the times I was there anyway, so I have no informed opinion on that front between them and Five Guys. I like Five Guys but I haven't been to one in nearly ten years. I feel like I'm eating a big bag of grease every time I go there.

Chick Fil-A all the way. Don't get me wrong, the Popeye's sandwich is very good, and it is comparable to the Chick Fil-A sandwich, but the rest of their menu does nothing for me. Their fries pale by comparison to Chick Fil-A's waffle fries. Outside of the sandwich at Popeye's, I don't think their menu is any different from your other run of the mill fried chicken joints like KFC or Church's.

I will say this, and I'm sure this will piss some people off on this board: I don't understand all the hoopla about Raising Cane's. I had them a couple of times when I lived in New Orleans for a summer, and I thought their chicken tenders (and the sauce) were very, very ordinary. They weren't bad by any stretch, I'd eat it if you put it in front of me, but it wasn't "life-changing" some people tend to think it is. I think they were just decent, average chicken tenders, and the sauce was good, but it wasn't much different than others I've had before. I'll take Chick Fil-A sauce over Cane's sauce every day of the week. If it makes you feel any better, I don't think Zaxby's is any better than Cane's.

Truthfully, I'd rather just make my own chicken tenders. I've done that several times, using buttermilk, and I think they turn out better anyway. If nothing else, they're fresher and crispier.

In N Out is the best value for your money, while I think Five Guys is the best burger regardless of price. Everyone criticizing In N Out doesn't seem to know how to order or know about the secret menu? Double Double animal style, fries extra crispy animal style, and neapolitan shake is an unbeatable order. Then you get all that food for like ~$5 cheaper than Five Guys

Then I'm Chick Fil A and Raising Canes all the way

Also fun fact that people may not know: Five Guys was started by a UM grad

Great debate for a snowy Sunday here.

Chicken sandwich: Fuku (David Chang's delivery-only spicy chicken joint) > Popeye's > Chick-fil-A

Burgers: Shake Shack > Five Guys > everything else

I am sure there are some regional differences, but in the metro DC area, this is how it shakes out for me.

The chick-fil-a spots near me need to change their peanut oil a little more frequently and sometimes the bun are soaked with oil and the chicken is a little underdone. Yeah, the people are friendly there, but I'd rather the food taste better...

As a side note - Gus' is incredible chicken, but it's too hard to get in this area.

Never had Popeye's. Loved Church's back in the day. Chick-fil-a is mostly just okay. But I stumbled into a Raising Cane's in Lincoln, NE, and that was the best non-homemade fried chicken I've ever tasted.

As for burgers, I don't think any of the chains really do them all that well. There was a place called Miller's on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn that was awesome. And there's a similar kind of place here in MN called Lion's Tap.

One last note on BW3, people knock them but I'm not sure why. The wings are pretty meaty, and I like doing a split order of Salt'N Vinegar and Asian Zing. Not terribly healthy of course, but when you're really hungry, those always hit the spot.

Curious about the downvote your response got. Because of the places you endorsed? B/c you've failed to experience the pleasure of Popeye's? B/c you actually went to Lincoln. (Lotsa anti-State of Nebraska sentiment on the MGoBoard.) B/c you're in Minnesota? (Lotsa MGoBoard objections to anything that's not their normal.)

I'll upvote you, thought it's not as if you need more points.

I've in lived Michigan, Las Vegas, Arizona, and now S.W. Florida so I've had my share of burgers in my lifetime. Other than an old bar in Marine City, Michigan called "Gars", I'm now into "Culvers" double cheeseburgers. Tuff to beat and they give them out free to Veterans on "Vet Day".

There’s really nothing special about Five Guys other than them giving you a crapload of fries. The Popeye’s chicken sandwich is fo’real though. Me, I’m happy with jr bacon cheeseburgers from Wendy’s or just using app deals at McD’s whenever I have a burger craving.

Popeyes is just too good...slight edge for me over chick

and i think both those burger joints are bupkis

for my Seattle Michigan fans on here...Dicks burgers am I right?! They smoke a lot of burger joints in quality.  Head on over and pick up a bag of Dicks ..as the locals say.

Need to try Popeyes. My impression is they are better if done well, but they do a much less good job of ensuring quality and consistency than Chick-fil-a. Some of the Popeye’s look like absolute dumps and have shitty reviews.

Five guys is okay, love the toppings and the Cajun fries. The insane amount of fries they give you is eh (I mean, if I actually want that many it’s great, but I usually don’t).

In’N’Out is ridiculously overrated. The animal double double is good for what it is, but what it is is a slightly fresher tasting Big Mac. The fries are only tolerable extra crispy.
