Fire him now unless he's willing to engage in some serious alcohol counseling as a requirement to keep his job. He clearly has a problem with alcohol that's seriously impacting his life. If he's willing to put others' lives at risk because he's too arrogant about his drinking or too drunk to call a ride share then he has no business coaching at Michigan.

Not a good look. Hopefully he went back and got his previous owi/dui arrest expunged. Not a felony based on being over 10 years from the previous arrest. Hopefully it doesn't derail him as a person or coach, but previous experience shows that the University of Michigan won't tolerate this.

OWI is a new one.

DUI

DWI

Lets federally pick one and stick with it.  Maybe this congress could manage to pass that.  Suppose OWI could mean other forms of construction equipment with or without wheels?

He's going to have a lot of legal issues to deal with - hopefully maintain 0% BAC, random tests, etc. I think he needs to be suspended w/o pay until the court case can be settled. I have an extended family member who was busted and had to breath into something tied to his ignition for at least a year.

While legally, the system may look back on his 2011 arrest when charging him (not an attorney, just an engineer), if I were Sherrone, I'd suspend him from gameday for the first 3-4 games w/o pay but let him work the practices.

Thank God it wasn't Greg Scruggs, that would've been a disaster of a start to a coaching career at Michigan.

I hope Chris gets his shit together.

Very possible. Also possible that they suspend him while he seeks treatment. Alcoholism and alcohol use disorders fall under the ADA. Obviously an OWI changes the math a bit, but it probably comes down to what conduct parameters were laid out in his hiring, and how badly they want to keep him.

For comparison, Kevin Sumlin got a DUI within a year of of being hired at Maryland. He was away from the team for a bit, alcohol classes, got probation, and it pretty much disappeared:

"We're aware of the charges. It's disappointing. As coaches, we have to set the example and model the behavior that we want [from] our players -- and we take it very seriously," Locksley said. "At the same time, I will also say he's part of our football family, and we're going to support Kevin."

I'm guessing the media attention will be a bit more intense for Michigan/Scruggs.

I hope Scruggs gets whatever help he needs to not do this again. And I hope this football program finds a way to just, like, be normal for a few weeks

People saying he will be dismissed are crazy it’s an OWI it’s not like he was beating his wife or causing a riot or anything.  Not to minimize but people saying they’d never get one are virtue signaling and have statistically  speaking engaged in the same behavior at some point in their lives.  People need to get off this pitchfork mob BS.  It doesn’t look good and was a poor choice but peoples perspective are all out of wack.

There are enough people whose lives have been devastated by drunk drivers, I'm not going to fault anyone for their reaction or overreaction to this.

I know in my younger years I drove on occasion when I shouldn't have and it sounds like Scruggs did too. I think to be nabbed a second time in your life--I don't care how many years later--is either a sign of a significant IQ or drinking problem.

Agreed about judgment and self-control. We were all younger once and did stupid things that in hindsight we shouldn't have done. Adulthood is about knowing yourself well enough to stay away from situations that prey on your weaknesses. For some people that means never going into bars or hanging out with those who drink; for many of us it means knowing that if we go out and have a drink it means one. More than one means taking an outsized risk that can seriously impact your life and other's lives as well. But then again words are easy to type and often harder to live by.

Considering all we have put up with Juwan for the past 5 years (Don't care that he played here) this is not a good look, but let's get him help, keep him and go from there.

If I was Moore and I had another dline candidate in waiting I would consider firing Scruggs just for this. That might sound excessive, but getting a DUI within your first 10 days is excessively stupid. It says a lot about him.

I thought background checks were being improved or does this only cover checking social media's? He had a previous DUI at Lousiville and was dismissed from the team before their bowl game. His team lost that game without him. You might think it's silly to judge him based off his playing days but he's only like 32 years old so it wasn't even long ago. Shouldn't be too hard to make sure he wasn't still drinking around town while at Wiscy.

Normally I'm not a big stickler but Michigan really needs to stop this constant flow of negative news stories.

I feel like the real key here is the fact he’s been employed for merely 10 days. The average drunk driver operates intoxicated 80 times before getting caught. So, either he has a serious drinking issue or he lacks in quality decision making. My guess is that it is a combination of the two. Considering he’s been employed for 10 days, if I was Warde I would can him. For me, there isn’t an upside here. He’s too much of a liability and we’ve had too much assistant coach scrutiny lately. If he’s already owning up to it, he’s going to plead guilty, so there aren’t any other circumstances to consider with this one.

Purely from a football perspective. First year head coach needs his coaches for his first spring practice and this dude is out getting arrested. Now they will go through spring practice without him.

Oh ffs. I’d fire him and start over.  It’s his first week on the job. This is a tremendous error in judgment. I can forgive him for the one when he was a college student, but not this one.

Call. A. Fucking. Uber.

There’s literally no excuse to drive drunk in this day and age, especially for high end earners like these folks. You’ve probably got enough money to hire your own damn professional driver.

I just don’t understand the point of getting behind the wheel anymore. There’s no excuse when a low-cost solution is literally a few clicks on your phone.
