Same with me..hearing about him I did my first one at 50..and did it totally awake and not under anything. Was not terrible at all.
Had 3 polyps that were cleared and doc said come back in 3 years so I get to go next year..yay.

He was well below the recommended (and recently lowered) screening age. Most likely genetic like Lynch syndrome.
February 28th, 2024 at 12:11 PM ^
Yeah, I don't mean to diminish the calls to get colonoscopies, but the recommended age starts at 45, and he was diagnosed at 31. I don't know what you're supposed to do at that point...
February 28th, 2024 at 12:30 PM ^
Could be, but colon cancer has been skyrocketing in people under 40 in recent years. Insurance almost universally doesn’t cover colonoscopies in this age range, which really complicated things
February 28th, 2024 at 5:24 PM ^
Well insurance companies could fucking start by covering it in people with symptoms regardless of age. Found it out the hard way today that it doesn't matter how bad, frequent or worrying your symptoms are, they will stick you with the whole bill regardless if you don't reach their age requirement. Luckily I can afford it, even if it sucks, but a lot of other people maybe couldn't.

Just had my first colonoscopy at age 46 about 5 months ago. Procedure itself is nothing. I watched the clock to see when I went out. Last I remember it was 12:31 PM. I awoke at 12:50 PM. Worse parts of the prep are the hunger and the middle of the night shits. Many worse things in life.
I have heard of a few different prep methods. I was given 2 6 ounce bottles of Clenpiq. Cranberry orange flavored. Not bad all compared to the jugs I have heard others have to take. At the end, they told me see you in 10 years so if you can get your screening, please do it!
February 28th, 2024 at 11:49 AM ^
The procedure itself is not bad. I slept through it and felt incredibly refreshed upon awakening. I normally don't sleep well and I can understand how Michael Jackson abused the drug.
No soreness after the procedure. OK, so the prep is inconvenient. Not terrible. If it can save you from a cancer diagnosis and subsequent chemotherapy, it's a cost/benefit winner.

My wife's grandmother, uncle and mom all died of colon cancer all at the age of 62. She gets a colonoscopy every other year.
I have one done every 5 years, with no family history of it. Still get it done.
February 28th, 2024 at 12:14 PM ^
At the very least blood tests, and stool sample tests twice a year especially if there is a history of bowel cancer in your family.
February 28th, 2024 at 12:38 PM ^
First go round, I got the standard colonoscopy. As everyone states - the prep is horrible
This year I used Cologuard - I'm sure you've seen the ads. Poop in a box and mail it in.
Unless you have a personal or family history with Colon cancer, I'd go this route - ask your doctor!

Sorry but not getting my medical advice from an anti-vax site.
February 28th, 2024 at 4:16 PM ^
Yeah, who needs evidence for their medical interventions.

You seem like the kind of guy who "does his own research."
Check out the conclusion in the cited study (https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2208375):
In this randomized trial, the risk of colorectal cancer at 10 years was lower among participants who were invited to undergo screening colonoscopy than among those who were assigned to no screening.
I have no comment on the Sensible Medicine writers in whom you're placing lots of trust.

Way too soon! Weren't he and Taylor Lewan high school teammates? Seems like yesterday that he was just in a maize and blue uniform.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:28 AM ^
From a Daily article:
They go against each other nearly every day at practice. In their first year, they also came home to each other in their dorm room. Both are natives of Scottsdale, Ariz., and they played one year of high school football together in 2008.
February 28th, 2024 at 11:23 AM ^
There was a time when Lewan was projected as a defensive end and was only playing defense, so we were potentially a late high school position switch away from not being able to see a 1st round offensive tackle.

What the hell
February 28th, 2024 at 10:14 AM ^
Well that's a fucking kick in the nuts this morning.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:14 AM ^
Dude...I had no clue he was even battling cancer. Prayers and condolences to his family. That just shocked me.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:18 AM ^
oh my. So so sad. Seemed like a great guy. RIP

RIP Craig 🙏
Condolences to your family 🙏
February 28th, 2024 at 10:19 AM ^
wow...very sad. I remember meeting him at Chipotle as a student.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:20 AM ^
Holy shit. I've been following him on IG for years. Great DL coaching tips for anyone playing the position or coaching it. Such a passion for coaching. I can't believe this.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:20 AM ^
Damn. Way too young. Rest in peace, Craig. Condolences to his family and thanks for his time devoted to the maize and blue.

GET. YOUR. COLON. CHECKED.
These things start as tiny polyps that they can remove just with the biopsy shit attached to the camera. But at that stage they're asymptomatic, so you need to schedule these proactively. By the time you feel anything, you're in big trouble.
And if you're worried about your dignity, I'll give you this: When you're dying of colon cancer, at some point a caregiver is going to be half-carrying your skeletal, half-naked, not-yet-corpse out of bed to a fucking commode where you get to shit in the middle of the room with everyone watching because you're not strong enough to be left alone. (Mom died of colon cancer. There was nothing dignified about her end-of-life care.)
Like GoBlue96 says, it's not fun, but you know what's less fun? Dying of colon cancer.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:25 AM ^
I had 3 polyps zapped at mine. I have to go back in 7 years instead of 10. Maybe it saved me.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:30 AM ^
They're moving up when to start these because there are increasing cases like Roh.
It used to be, get your first at 50, but Roh didn't even make it to 35.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:40 AM ^
Yup, I wonder if he had family history of it or something else like UC/crohns
February 28th, 2024 at 11:24 AM ^
Not all insurance approves of it that early. A shame.
February 28th, 2024 at 12:13 PM ^
Yeah, he was 31 when he was diagnosed...
February 28th, 2024 at 11:25 AM ^
I've been doing every 3 years for the last several and they've removed 6 polyps so far. It's really not that bad. If you have a family history, start early. If you don't, at least start by 45.
February 28th, 2024 at 11:08 AM ^
The problem is if you don't have a family history of colon cancer you likely aren't going to get one before 45. They are an expensive procedure and insurance companies aren't going to give one to every person every 5-10 years beginning at age 30. We have a family history of the disease and I pushed to get my first one as soon as possible. I know very little about the alternative testing options but hopefully these become viable option so that every one can get tested accurately as young as possible.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:21 AM ^
Holy shit, he's got to be in his early 30s? Im a little older but he was one of the first big time recruits I remember being pumped about when I started my sicko phase and following recruiting.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:21 AM ^
Aw, fkn hell. This sucks. :(
February 28th, 2024 at 10:27 AM ^
Damn. Prayers to his family.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:28 AM ^
I had no idea he was sick. Prayers for his family.
I will always be thankful to the Rich Rod/Hoke teams he played under as it was his spirit (undersized playing out of position and poorly utilized) that epitomized the only thing that got me through those years...besting ND.
I hope he was able to watch and take in M-2023.
I would like to see M play with the number 88 on the helmets or sleeves and discuss colon cancer awareness.

Two a-maizing Michigan Men!!
Mike Martin hugging Craig Roh 🤗

I love the idea of the team increasing awareness on this, as they did with mental health awareness in the past. Count me in if they sell merch related to colon cancer awareness.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:28 AM ^
That's a gut punch. I loved his twitter account, which was loaded with instructional content for defensive lineman. All the little technique stuff that is very hard to notice but so important to playing the position. He was a great football mind.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:30 AM ^
Best of wishes to his wife and family.
Lost my dad @55 due to colon cancer. Had my first colonoscopy @38. It doesn't hurt to be proactive.
February 28th, 2024 at 11:28 AM ^
And if you have no family history it is a good idea anyway to at least have your Primary Doctor prescribe the home colon test (Cologard) which with good results mean you need not do it again for several years per your physician. Might know something about that.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:32 AM ^
Damn, that is sad. He was way, way too young...I lost my uncle to colon cancer. Do get checked, as others have said.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:34 AM ^
Oh, that is so sad. God bless his wife and family. So young.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:34 AM ^
Fun player to watch. Sounds like an even better person.
This earth lost a good one. So sorry to the Roh family.
