Lol I have never seen Michigan fans defend Lewan Gibbons or Anderson.  Lewan and Gibbons are two of the most hated athletes on this board, regardless of school.  I’ve never seen anyone say Anderson is innocent the way some Penn State fans have about Sandusky.  No does have his apologists so you are somewhat right on that score.  As for Juwan, 95% of the posters here are stipulating that Juwan was wrong to do what he did, even as they criticize Gard et al.

Incidentally, those years where we “used to be better” were when the Anderson abuse was being covered up and/or ignored.

My first reaction was the national outrage will basically force Warde to fire Juwan, but the narrative is beginning to change a little. There’s even an article on CBS Sports saying both sides are at fault and suspensions will be coming for both teams.
With that said, Juwan needs to change or he needs to go. I don’t care where in Chicago he grew up or how he lived when he was young. He’s been in basketball as a profession for 20+ years and he’s learned by now that you can’t physically attack someone because you’re angry and he should know by now how to conduct himself as a professional and the leader of this program. This is the second time in the last twelve months he had to be restrained from going after an opposing coach. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s embarrassing, but I’m certainly not proud of his behavior.

I went through the CBS footage frame-by-frame. I took out names (except the two coaches) because I'm not 100% sure who all is who, and I'm not calling out any of the kids directly.

A couple things. This all happened in front of the Michigan bench. Multiple Wisconsin assistants aggressively inserted themselves into the Michigan bench area and the players as did multiple Wisconsin players.

Whatever punishment comes down, there are two Wisconsin assistants, and one Wisconsin player who deserve it, as well.

1. Howard has his words ("I'll remember that shit.") and tries to walk past Gard.

2. Gard grabs Howard's arm and they have more words.

3. Wisconsin Asst1., jumps in yelling stuff.

4. Michigan Player1 inserts himself in between the coaches, peacemaking.

5. Wisconsin Asst.2, jumps in, it is not clear what he is doing.

6. Wisconsin Asst.3, jumps in aggressively, he is yelling towards Howard.

7. A second Michigan Player2 jumps in between Howard and the Wisconsin assistants.

8. Howard and Gard, now separated, are still yelling at each other.

9. Wisconsin Asst.3, still yelling at Howard, being held back by some guy in a B1G shirt (network guy?). He felt it was necessary to do so for some reason...

10. Wisconsin Asst.3, reaches out, hand in Michigan Player2's chest, yelling at him.

11. Howard reaches out and grabs at Wisconsin Asst.3's head.

12. Wisconsin Asst.3 dodge's Howard and Howard's hand connects upside his head.

13. Police officer slips in...

14. Wisconsin Asst.2 takes down Michigan Player2, behind the melee.

15. Wisconsin Player1, pushes through into the melee towards Michigan Players

16. Michigan Player2 is back on his feet.

17. Wisconsin Player2, aggressively pushes through from the Wisconsin side, all the way to Michigan Player2, and punches him in the face, two times.

18. Michigan Player3 takes swings at Wisconsin Player2, probably connecting at least once.

Melee diffuses as Wisconsin Player3 - dipshit fouling god - calls for the team to sing, wants Michigan players and coaches off the court

Nice frame-by-frame analysis. Thank you.

Nevertheless, considering the likelihood that many fans at the game were taking videos of what happened, there probably will be several videos of the incident to be reviewed, and I think that Frankie Collins, Jaron Faulds and Terrance Williams II who were closest to Juwan Howard and Greg Gard when the shouting started will be interviewed about what they heard during the early moments of the incident.

Waiting for multiple versions of the "Zapruder film".

A little bit of this going on there. Juwan--at this stage--doesn't have to be rational, just to know himself well enough not to want to talk about it there and then. Plenty of times I'm pissed and need to sort something out and refuse to talk at that moment. He tries to push on; Gard catches his arm, then puts a hand on his chest. Juwan tries to move way out of the picture. Then he stands there watching three Wisconsin assistants being aggressive with his players. No, Juwan cannot hit anyone, but there are a lot of contributing factors. Of course, if you show the nation shots of Juwan nailing the guy in the face people are going to cry bloody murder. . . a little more going on there, which is why you don't shitcan somebody in the heat of the moment. M fans calling for the firing of their own coach should be ashamed of themselves. They're reactionary, in the truest construction of that word.

I mean you have some people comparing it to the Woody Hayes incident, I think that should tell you all you need to know about some posters ability to step back and think logically about what transpired. Which quite frankly was a stupid incident where both parties had chances to descalate and share responsibility for that.

Personally, my favorite part of the Michigan fan base is the part that runs to grab the sword out of the case to commit ritual suicide. A lot of you are in this thread so thanks for showing up!

This is a trend now.  The more I think about it, a removal may not be the worst decision.  He needs to be better than this, but he incited a near riot. And he put his own players into a toxic situation.  The HC job is project his players, not get caught up In whatever grievances that he perceives

If he calls off the dogs and let's Wisconsin dribble out the clock - nothing happens.

If he walks by Gard without shaking his hand AND without saying anything Gard probably doesn't grab his arm - nothing happens.

If Gard says something in response without grabbing his arm - probably nothing happens.

Man, I don't know, my prevailing thought is do not start any shit in a very public setting like this.  Handle your personal business in private.  There is nothing good that can come out out of airing grievances the way Juwan did.  You need to think before you act, especially when you are the coach of a high profile program like Michigan.

I agree with you but as you can see both can be true.  You can TRY and restrain yourself and walk away after regaining your professionalism and STILL, lose your crap!!!!  Listen most people say yeah if he touched me or grabbed me I’d walk away.  That’s so hilarious because no one in here knows exactly what they would do, because no man knows exactly what makes them FEEL disrespected until it happens.  Yet and still I don’t agree with how or what happened,”I’m just saying.”

Good point about feeling disrespected.  Perhaps Gard felt that the finger pointing in his face was like a slap in the face, like he was being scolded like a poorly behaving child in front of his home crowd.  Something like that wouldn't set me off, but the egos that control major college sports probably think vastly different than people like me.

I am pretty sure he was talking about the grab by Gard and how it is easier said than done to say Howard shouldn't react to it. I mean Howard would have been better off not saying what he did prior but the physical portion of the interaction was started by Gard and I can see how Howard felt a grab like that  was dispectful.

Do you know how many scuffles way worse than this happen every day with no high profile rich guys and no one spends the night in jail?  I don’t either but it is a lot.  You are just throwing something out there.  Juwan should not have done what he did but jail?  You are like the guy who says he should be drug tested.

Fuck what rest of country thinks.

I like our coach. He's good. We keep him and learn from experience. Why would we buckle for our rivals.Other BIG 10 teams gonna cheer if he's fired. And yall gonna be bitching when we are BAD.

The honor shit just kills me. Just win baby. Hopefully this energizes the team to win for their coach. Fuck Wisconsin. Fuck osu. Fuck everyone. Go join church basketball.

People on this board are idiots.  It’s called assault.  You can’t physically touch an opposing coach regardless if he called you a derogatory word, you don’t like his deodorant, etc.  When you are in charge of a million dollar program, leading teenagers, you just don’t do what he did - period.  End of story.  I don’t give a fuck if Wisky is a sad sack of shit (which they are) … you don’t touch other people.

So by your logic Wisconsin's assistant coach shoving Faulds or putting his hands on Williams prior to Howard's reaction should fall into the whole you shouldn't touch people right? Or you know Gard putting his hands on Howard initially. Criticize Howard for taking it further sure, but if your argument is people shouldn't put their hands on each other both parties did that in this case.

I get all sides of the argument; and, of course the University of Michigan is going to come out and apologize directly to de-escalate the situation.  Which, in turn, will make it easier to not have to dismiss Coach Howard.

Seeing the video, it is obvious that Howard is pissed off, regardless of whether you believe it is justified or not.  The Wiscy coach grabs his arm and is completely patronizing to coach Howard as he is walking by.  Just let him go!  You don't grab a man and begin to push your point of view on him in that situation.  You let him walk the hell by.  It all escalates and coach sees his players being manhandled.  Coach is not going to stand by, in that situation, and watch that happen.

Those trying to compare this to Woody Hayes are complete imbecile.  Yes, Howard was wrong to let his emotions get the best of him.  Yes, he will and should be suspended for a brief time.  No, he wasn't walking on the court to punch a student athlete in the face for stealing the ball.  Seriously, you are lost and confused individuals.

He will learn from this.  The team will rally.  I wouldn't be surprised if they played better down the stretch, fighting for a coach who has their back.

If, in fact, the University is not happy with him, they may use this as an excuse to move in a different direction.  I don't see that happing.

Howard started shit with a bitch attitude about a timeout (despite having his team with starters in playing a full court press). Gard overreacted like a coach hardo. Howard overreacted like a child with no self restraint and made an ass of himself. Nobody looks good, Howard looks like a guy you aren’t sure you can trust to be a coach

The Wisconsin coaches definitely amped up the situation with a combined bull rush of sorts , shoving and grabbing  forearms.

Juwan lit the fuse, as it's hard to imagine it escalating without the slap.

Certainly multiple coaches/staff facing suspension for Wisconsin.

Still at the end of the day what got Juwan pissed off so much.

Game was lost, pull your starters, give your deep bench a half minute, go home.

Nope, leave starters in, full press down 15, with 30 seconds left.

Then yell out for a foul on the inbounds after the timeout. Yell out "good foul Jace"

Walk out to the court instead of leading shake line.

Don't care about blaming whoever with what happens next.

Unless I missed something, what "shit" was Juwan going to remember. The coach created his own little ball of hate act over nothing.

Depending on the tint of your glasses, who's to blame is cemented for you.

I simply don't  respect the coaching strategy and behavior, followed by his presser blaming a time out as justification.

Why did the law enforcement officer that was within two feet not deescalate the situation when things initially got physical between Juwan and Greg? Regardless of what happened after, had he intervened when Greg touched Juwan and Juwan reacted by grabbing Greg the whole situation could have been a lot different.
