2025 4* QB Carter Smith commits to Michigan

Awesome! Great choice young man!
November 14th, 2023 at 11:40 AM ^
Bet.
Go Blue!
November 14th, 2023 at 11:43 AM ^
I Hope this doesnt mean we are out of the running with Underwood.
November 14th, 2023 at 11:44 AM ^
I think Underwood is going to Tennessee
November 14th, 2023 at 12:33 PM ^
but then he'll come back as the PTBNL in the Joe Milton trade
November 14th, 2023 at 11:46 AM ^
Most likely, unfortunately...
I distinctly remember a comment 'markusr2007' made a few weeks saying "Word is it's MICHIGAN", but alas.
November 14th, 2023 at 11:47 AM ^
Not out of the running, no.
Sam Webb and Brice Marich did say that Michigan's optimism around Underwood is perhaps just a little bit lower than it was, but Michigan is still recruiting him hard and he is still considering them. I think he is expected to be at The Game.

What's the over/underwood?
November 14th, 2023 at 1:33 PM ^
User name checks out

Sam explained this today. Basically, another QB in our class does not eliminate us as Underwood considers other priorities. It does have some impact but he wouldn't be against two QBs in a class. Some of his top 7 have already taken another QB and Underwood did not eliminate them.
November 14th, 2023 at 11:56 AM ^
Sounds a lot like what he said about Taylor Tatum when Jordan Marshall committed.
November 14th, 2023 at 11:56 AM ^
This looks like a wise hedge against the decision risk of 18 year olds.
November 14th, 2023 at 11:58 AM ^
Yeah, sounds like our worst case scenario now is Carter Smith, which is pretty cool.
November 14th, 2023 at 12:03 PM ^
I thought it was mentioned somewhere reputable that Michigan was looking to take two QBs in 2025, but on the Sam Webb recruiting podcast, they said that Underwood would get a call for the right of first refusal if one of the big three they are recruiting wanted to commit.
I don't remember Carter Smith being named as one of the big three they're going after.
November 14th, 2023 at 12:12 PM ^
We were never getting Underwood.
November 14th, 2023 at 12:25 PM ^
That’s just not a true statement. But I’m sure you “know someone.”
November 14th, 2023 at 12:56 PM ^
I don't know someone. It's virtually guaranteed he will go to LSU though. They'll back up the Brink's truck. They throw the ball more. Better weather. They do all the cringey self promotion stuff that high school kids love.
November 14th, 2023 at 12:33 PM ^
Regardless, QB is something we need to have 1 or 2 prospects each cycle. This guy is really good (I live in the area), and is extremely talented. In previous cycles we went all in on 1 guy and have lost almost every time. 2020 we ended up with Dan Villari, 21 we luckily got JJ, 22 we took 2 lower rated guys in Denegal and THERES AN ORJI IN THE ENDZONE, 23 we were all in on Dante Moore and took Kendrick Bell, 24 we luckily landed Jadyn Davis, but cannot believe we didn't get CJ Carr.
The QB dominos are falling in the 25 class, with OSU, Oregon, Texas, ND, and Prime taking theirs. Alabama, Georgia, LSU, USC will probably all take top QB prospects too.
November 14th, 2023 at 12:51 PM ^
Still want Bryce, but just like Henne and Guiterez, you never know when you'll need another QB.
Welcome Carter Smith! Go Blue!
November 14th, 2023 at 1:16 PM ^
I suspect it does a bit. You look at LSU's offense and you get to put up video game numbers. Now, you might go 8-4/9-3 putting up those numbers but it's fun.
November 14th, 2023 at 1:30 PM ^
Ill put it this way, Sam Webb today described the situation as "I wouldn't say Michigan leads for the kid, but they're in the running." Sam is a homer for sure, but usually if he thinks Michigan has a real shot (whether or not he's right) he'll talk it up like it's 50/50 or down to 3 schools and Michigan is right in there, and he was very much not like that when discussing Underwood. I'd say we're running 4-7 in his top 7 and whoever has the most NIL in that group is gonna land him.

It is a welcome change from Weiss’ strategy of putting all his eggs in one basket. The reason we will likely have to start a grad transfer at QB next year (or true freshman Davis) is Weiss went so all in on Dante Moore that after Nate Johnson passed on us for Utah, we didn’t seriously target any QBs in the 2022 or 2023 classes (at least until it was far too late for the 2023 class). I like Kirk Campbell’s approach. With the transfer portal, another QB commit shouldn’t scare off someone with the talent of Underwood. But it keeps Michigan protected if he commits elsewhere.
November 14th, 2023 at 2:19 PM ^
As others have said, it means more than likely we won't be getting Underwood. I know they said we'll take 2 QBs, and maybe that's true, but Underwood won't be one. It sucks too because he's the closest to a JJ level (maybe even better) guy they had a good shot at.
Smith seems fine, a solid QB, but I think the low 4*/high 3* makes sense. I would definitely rank him below a guy like Davis from the 24 class, but you need to get a QB every year so it makes sense.

As a fan, I'm happy with the win at psu. We all know what that game meant, but you have to think as a 5* QB even at 17 or 18 years old he might be wondering about choosing a team that hands the ball off 30+ times in a row. LSU money bags will probably play into that decision as well.
On the other hand running backs should be knocking Michigans door down right now.
November 14th, 2023 at 11:44 AM ^
Yay! Bold move going with #9. I like it.
November 14th, 2023 at 12:09 PM ^
JJ was ranked between 6 and 9 when he came out of high school.
November 14th, 2023 at 12:18 PM ^
Nice.
November 14th, 2023 at 12:18 PM ^
I believe he means the jersey number in the announcement, not Smith's ranking.
November 14th, 2023 at 12:25 PM ^
Fun fact: On3 had JJ ranked as the #17 QB, lower than Minnesota QB Athan Kaliakmanis and Indiana WR Donaven McCulley
November 14th, 2023 at 1:08 PM ^
Where'd you see that? Was that an early ranking? Because this says he finished ranked as the #9 QB, #47 overall...

Pfft! Facts with links -- that doesn't fit the narrative I want to push today.
I just made myself sad.
November 14th, 2023 at 2:25 PM ^
What? You are looking at their industry (analogous to the 247 composite) ranking not the On3 scouted ranking.
November 14th, 2023 at 11:44 AM ^
GoBlue89 said, in the thread posted right after this, Michigan is looking to take 2 QB's in this class. Sam Webb with the news
November 14th, 2023 at 11:49 AM ^
Looks like a mobile QB. 62% completion - so not too shabby in the accuracy dept either. Had some interceptions Soph year but they are down significantly in the Jr year.
Release is a little wonky. I imagine good coaching can take care of it.
Great pickup. Not a five star - but a great College QB.
November 14th, 2023 at 12:33 PM ^
Baseball player that throws a 95 mph ball. Sounds like a baseball throw makes it a little wonky with his side throws and
November 14th, 2023 at 11:53 AM ^
Maybe if he has a little free time, he can help the baseball team out. Kid was rated as the #1 shortstop in the country a couple years ago and is also considered a high level pitching prospect and comes from a strong baseball family. Kid has a somewhat un-orthodox throwing motion but ultra quick release and very good arm strength. A lot of similarities to Pat Mahomes; including same height (6'3) and weight (180). Would also mention he's the first QB I can remember that has multiple impressive blocks in his highlight real (where he is blocking for their RB), which IMO demonstrates his mentality. Lastly, only had 2 picks this year. Everything about the kid screams he'll really fit and be successful at Michigan.
November 14th, 2023 at 12:02 PM ^
Baseball, eh? Keep Steinbrenner away from him, stat!
November 14th, 2023 at 12:11 PM ^
Too soon.
November 14th, 2023 at 12:21 PM ^
I feel like having our QBs snatched by the Yankees would be low on our list of concerns in the event of a zombie apocalypse.
November 14th, 2023 at 12:08 PM ^
Him being a baseball player definitely makes sense why his throwing motion looks how it does. His highlights kinda remind me of Bo Nix
November 14th, 2023 at 1:34 PM ^
A blocking QB? Can he be more perfect for Michigan? lol
November 14th, 2023 at 11:54 AM ^
Looks good in #9.
November 14th, 2023 at 11:55 AM ^
He'll be a great successor to Arch Manning
November 14th, 2023 at 11:56 AM ^
I'm not sure how this works with Underwood coming and Allar transferring in (so Campbell can fix him) but hey, if we are going to take all the signs, might as well take all the quarterbacks as well.
November 14th, 2023 at 11:58 AM ^
I know you're joking but there was a Penn State blog that mentioned Campbell as a potential candidate for Penn State OC and...that would be unfortunate. We gotta keep him on board.
November 14th, 2023 at 12:05 PM ^
huh?
He is the OC here why would he go lateral.
November 14th, 2023 at 12:09 PM ^
I thought Moore was our OC...
November 14th, 2023 at 12:09 PM ^
He isn't, he's QB coach. Moore is the offensive coordinator
