They have a box with a few dozen assorted versions behind their couch?
Probably one for each team that interviewed them.
Every player with a live-feed gets all 32 hats. Assuming the wholesale cost is even $5 a hat, you're only looking at $160 per player, or $16k per 100 players. This is a rounding error given the costs of the whole production.
BTW, the NFL shared this video of the stage jersey preparation: https://old.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/1ceolps/highlight_how_jerseys_are_prepped_backstage_at/
So the real question is, who is the designated person to rummage through the hat box to find the right hat after the name is called?
My guess is that there are only a handful of realistic possibilities for each player.
Maybe the other hats get returned for resale… or maybe they get tossed in the trash. Cost of doing business?

Maybe kids in Africa are wearing them with their UW Championship tshirts?

So you're saying Penix was scrambling to find the Falcons hat
Friend or Family member. The player gets a call from the team before they're picked so they have plenty of time to get the right hat before named on TV.
The players are informed they’re getting drafted before their name is actually called

No fricken way? Wow, this is some scintillating info. Thanks for this.

One only has to watch the video of Harbaugh calling Junior Colson before the pick is announced as evidence of this.

The hat fot the team picking is the only one they need - so yeah, probably not an issue to dig that one out - maybe even line them up in order of the draft.

There are 5 minutes between picks and you get a call from the team before your selection is announced. This isn't that mysterious plus you know which team is seriously considering you in the run-up to team draft spot.

Brad Galli did a story on it before the draft. impressive that they print with about 60 sec. notice to get it on stage in time.

i did for the first time see a table filled with every team’s hats behind a draftee the other night. they were all lined up behind the couch on the table.

This would be the correct answer, player's with live feed have a box containing a hat from every NFL team sent to their location. I'm not sure of the cost but the NFL prints money, so I'm sure it's not something the league is too concerned with.
My guess is extra hats are given away to friends and family.
David Copperfield
His greatest trick is getting Claudia Schiffer
The story was that their arrangement was for show and money.
Did espn report the story? We all know how one sided espn can be
Did it come from Ryan Day? He’s a jealous jerk.
ryan day is very, very tough, just ask him. like his team. and he doesn't dye his hair. nope. all natural.
“His hair is as natural as mine,” says Nick Saban
Apparently day’s hair was the one part of him not born on 3rd base

I'm guessing JJ had a pretty good idea, not sure about Blake, but maybe both had multiple caps based on the teams they interviewed with?
I imagine any player who's going to be on TV remotely could just be shipped one from every team.
It's photoshopped. They wear a green hat.
No Michigan Man ever wears a green hat.
And it's exceedingly rare for a green-hatted spartie to be drafted by the NFL. Most instead are picked up as UDPDD (un-drafted pizza delivery drivers).
Do you mean to ask, "why do birds suddenly appear?"

Here's a quote from Joe Milton.
"I had all the NFL hats laid out. You just never know where you're going to end up. I was just waiting on any phone call,"
I would imagine that players have a box with every team hat sent to them by New Era. Then the players send back the hats from the other teams.

Thank you for this, I couldn't remember who said it.
I mean, it's pretty obvious they have all the team hats in front of them. Not sure why this is a mystery it's not like they have a 3D hat printer laying around.
