#1 Quarterback Julian Sayin in Portal

Submitted by jmstranger on January 19th, 2024 at 9:38 AM

Julian Sayin has entered the portal. His final list was Alabama, Texas, LSU, and Ohio State. Could this explain why Ryan Day hired Bill O’Brien (I’m not sure how involved he would have been in Sayin’s recruitment prior to leaving Alabama)

If he's looking at OSU, I hope all of our private investigators are laser focused on making sure he doesn't receive and monetary inducements.  And also that the first contact between him and the school wasn't until the portal announcement.  That would be a real competitive advantage to get the top QB in the country without following the rules.

If the kid can look at how Penix did with Deboer and think he needs to go elsewhere, he’s not very bright.I assume it must be because it he decided he doesn’t want to sit behind Milroe for possibly two years.

If he'd already played his freshman year at Alabama I'd say Michigan ought to put the full court press on him so you could get someone in here with experience, but he's the same class as Jadyn. So unless you think Sayin is truly that much better than Jadyn and you're willing to risk him walking out the door, I'd say just stay where you're at.

I know Davis fell down the rankings, but that seems more based on his measureables. His play on the field speaks for itself.

I don't understand how OSU can be in consideration knowing they have a QB in the same class, a transfer QB this year and multiple other QBs.

It's so annoying how well they recruit and always seem to be in contention for everyone. I doubt he ends up there in this case, but overall it's annoying.

Urban Meyer likely set up a major league bagmen operation, which is why Ohio State is always on the final list for 5 stars.  Why else would OSU be always mentioned, and Michigan almost never mentioned.  Winning?  Self explanatory.  It’s astonishing to me the lack of impact that 3 straight Big 10 titles/CFP appearances has on recruiting. Coaching stability?  Michigan has an issue here, but it’s no secret that the natives are getting restless with Day. Weather-no difference.  Facilities-no first hand knowledge, but I suspect no difference. Culture?  Michigan has this one. It’s got be be money and/or differing academic expectations. A private investigation of Ohio State recruiting practices would probably bear fruit.

I think he setup a lot more than a bagmen service. He has been repeatedly deemed unhireable by I believe the Cover 3 and Solid Verbal podcasts crews. I think others have said similar things. I don't get what that means, but I have to assume he setup something closer to Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss than a few casual local business investors in his team.

There's a culture difference?   Are you sure?

Those in Columbus are driving around in Mercedes AMG G63's and wearing Louis Vuitton shoes.  Michigan players are donating school supplies, providing Thanksgiving dinners, helping Holiday Toy Drives, and giving back to Mott's.

Oh - there does seem to be a difference - and, I LOVE the maturity, accountability, sense of community, and responsibility of the men on Michigan's roster.

I don't understand the point of him going to OSU. If he ends up there, either he or Noland will transfer out before this is all done and over with. They're in the same class. Its not like they can both play.

I mean sure, if he wants to go there OSU should take him, let him compete and let the chips fall where they may. But Noland was really highly ranked too. Is Sayin supposed to be that much better?

It just doesn't seem like you're getting a noticeably visible upgrade. But if you take him, either he or Noland will not be on the roster within a year or two.

Wherever Julian Sayin ends up, this is just a PSA that Michigan is defending national champs and has beaten anOSU 3 years running (would've been 4 if Dan Villari had a say in it).  Now back to your regularly scheduled hand wringing.

I have accepted that any time I see that a "former 5*" is in the portal I immediately move on. Especially if they come from a bag-happy program. We will not land these players; we couldn't even land the hometown 5* in the portal.

When I see "3 year starter from Northwestern, Stanford, etc." enters portal, that is when I start to get excited.

I would love to be able to stock up on some of these supreme athletes, but we have shown that we will not engage in the bag game for recruits. Stay a couple years and have some success? Then yes, but who can knock a 18-19 year old kid who sees instant 6 or 7 figures vs maybe some money 2-3 years from now. Even if the kid considers that, I'm sure his circle usually will campaign for the former.

Va - I don't feel sorry for Bama - though, I do feel that DeBoer's going to be on a hot seat much quicker than he may have anticipated.

Bama plays at Wisconsin (Camp Randall) and hosts Georgia in September.  It's possible they could be 2-2 on October 1st.   And, later in the season - the Tide will travel to Tennessee. LSU, and Oklahoma - with other key games including hosting Missouri and Mercer.

I predict a bit of unrest in Tuscaloosa.

Oh - one other thing - has anyone ever questioned how Bama was able to recruit so incredibly successfully over the years?    Perhaps their engineering program was part of the reason.

Don't know what the hell is going on behind closed doors at OSU, but they must be in taking a lot more than the $13 million that Day asked for.  If the NCAA looked into what FSU did, then how can they not be pressured into looking into what OSU is doing.

Day does have a reputation for putting QB's in the league, going to the Heisman ceremony, and playing in a passing offense.  Haskins, Fields, and Stroud was quite a run.

That is understandable, but why would Sayin want to commit to OSU knowing Noland is coming in next year, and Howard would be the starter?  After Howard, OSU has Brown and Noland, and now maybe Sayin too?  Michigan has a reputation of putting OL in the NFL, but they are not getting double-digit 5 star OL commits next year.  NIL is beyond getting out-of-hand; it is getting into the realm of violations now that need to be looked at.
