When dealing with a tyrant (Petitti Snowflake)

Submitted by Blue_Goose on November 17th, 2023 at 7:53 AM

We have all dealt with power hungry self aggrandizing individuals.  Petitti is no doubt among these types. After all, you don’t become the CEO of MLB and a conference commissioner by being an ignorant pushover.

Petitti was clearly out of line, but he is the boss.  At the end of the day, we say he “can’t” suspend one individual on behalf of another under the guise of sportsmanship, but he just did.  We argue the case on precedent and integrity and a healthy future.  He argues it on power authority and the exploitation of poorly written bylaws.

Petitti doesn’t capitulate, stares down Michigan’s threat and then says, “if you win this TRO I can just make a new ruling that will be more annoying and need a new TRO, more court cases…etc. OR you can accept this punishment and I’ll call off the dogs and maybe even advocate for you as your commissioner in the NCAA investigation”

I know these types of leaders and you do too. As much as we want to function as leaders and best, there are arrogant, boundary pushing assholes in leadership everywhere. This seems the most plausible scenario in my mind.

I’m devastated and the idea of this asshat running our league has me furious. I am contemplating giving up college football(it is is supposed to be a fun escape) unless 〽️ makes a bold move to leave the league or have Petitti removed.  This after all would be the only options available if you want to function with integrity and your boss wants to function with impunity.

I will sit back and cheer for the student athlete who truly are the victims. I am still proud to be a Michigan Wolverine, I pray we truly did choose to focus on the championship and fight a more winnable and long-term battle to remove Petitte or remove ourselves.

Until then GoBlue, Bet〽️

Sorry, everybody.  I drank too much last night and crazy-posted.

But being “devastated” by this is also crazy.  While this is not a just outcome, the players get to focus on football now and know what the deal is.

Sure, maybe devastated is a bit much. But I, for one, find the idea of dealing with this tyrant for the foreseeable future or the idea of the leaving the B1G both somewhat joy-robbing.  Is that a better description?

Is Petitti only going to pick on Harbaugh?  Will he render other random suspensions to other head coaches for level two infractions by rogue staff?

I know anger  toward our historic rivals is popular right now, but do we really all want a season without any B1G opponents?  Seems a strange desire considering how up in arms everyone has been about adding PAC-12 teams.

So while being devastated over a sport is unhealthy, there is a certain level of loss of something that matters to me that is very real right now. And it sucks.

Just, please, for the love of god, stop posting feelings-centered stories. No Michigan fan that is here is happy about the ruling, but we don’t all need our own OP. You didn’t give us new information, just your take on the commissioner being a dic-tator.

The only viable reason to post what you did should—should—be for you to have every rational fan say, you are being dramatic. Football is still fun to watch. Michigan is still fun to watch.

Gamesmanship adds to the drama, but your drama doesn’t add to The Game.

Blue_Goose

November 17th, 2023 at 11:24 AM ^

weird take…

What is the point of gamesmanship drama if we don’t react/interact with it?  The drama of Sherrone crying and cussing didn’t add to it?  The drama has caused our athlete to be on “all 10” for the games.   The drama shared amongst the vast network of Wolverines is a major point of the value of this blog.

IDK man. You can say I’m being over dramatic but I would argue you are being  underdramatic (shut up and deal with it) which is its own type of drama. But all of it adds to the culture of college football, if not the game itself.

So Blue_Goose is the original poster, but goblu330 is apologizing for the OP and then Blue_Goose is consoling goblue330.  Is this one person with two accounts who got them mixed up?

I thought I was obsessed with Michigan and MGoBlog, but that is another level.

Edit: I do think the OP has a good point thought, which I asked in the Ghost of Fritz Crisler Diary.  You can't fight the boss.  There may be "contract" with the B1G, but end of the day, they really can do whatever they want.  I was a negotiator at a former company and the CEO was a USC law school grad.  Whenever we did anything shady he'd say the worst that would happen is they would send us a cease and desists.  It was like the one thing he learned in law school.  I'm sure there are lots of examples to the contrary, but my impression is that contracts and laws don't mean anything if you aren't dealing with moral people. Most of the time it is too much effort to seek justice.  That is Michigan's problem is that we keep trying to be the bigger person.  I both respect it and hate it.

This is hysterical.  But, no, I do not know gblu330.  I looked at the posting history to try to figure it out myself.  He? Seems to have posted some crazy shit last night that has been redacted and some of it expunged.  I think he was trying to say my drama was worse than his drunk posting. Whatever…

I do believe my OP did offer a differing perspective than the primary narrative that the B1G found something more or we simply caved. I fully admit it isn’t unique. I have read much of the many 300+ response postings and I took a chance.  It was a risk but calculated. Neg, upvote whatever you want. It’s a free country despite what Petitte believes.

It’s too dumb for me to get too bent out of shape. I hope UM still can win and believe they will. It’s a shame, but now it’s clear some actual ‘shenanigans’ happened. Now I just hope this precedent is followed for all situations that are the same offense and it gets the same treatment. OSU and Purdue’s collusion was advanced scouting and sign stealing. 3 games. That’s what will drive me crazy - If it’s not uniformly decided. Otherwise, let us take the punishment. Wrong was actually (apparently?!) done. Punish the others. You have no basis not to.

I could give two shits about Petitti. It's not being willing to fight back when the rest of the conference decides to gang up on us that sticks in my craw.

In half an hour I went from having a ton of respect for Ono and a modicum of respect for Warde to having none at all for either.

Exactly this.

And all these so called insiders on this board can make like a tree and fuck off.

Blah blah blah binder. Blah blah blah unified Michigan blah blah blah OSU blah blah blah.

Finally the Michigan that I've loved since I was a little kid was going to take the gloves off and fight back.

All of that to roll over and give in yet again just pisses me off in ways I'm having a hard time coherently expressing.

Could be (in fact it seems likely) that Ono and Warde had the rug pulled out from under them as well.  They both made pretty strong statements/stances in support.

Did the regents pull the plug?

Did Michigan secretly trade for something?

Did Harbaugh start to see this was becoming a distraction and was negatively starting to impact their chances of winning?

BTW, if Pettiti acted as posited, expect more in the future.

Yep. Not the best showing by Ono, Warde and BoR. I don't think I can ever get over how the left the Harbaugh, our alumni, the coaches and the players to dry. The shame to them hasn't been mitigated. So, yeah. I am more upset about our own. Fucking politicians and the suits. Always throw everyone below them under the bus to advance their motive.

The reality is that Michigan is part of a collective that gives a lot of power to the leadership of that collective. If all the other members AND the leadership team up on any one member of the collective that lone member is fucked. Period. It might as well be The Eye of Sauron. The only fight was keeping that collective off your back until The NCAA was done (in other words, not this season). It was always about pushing it to 2024. Everyone knows this is a team that has a chance to win it all and next year they'll probably be not as good. People will accept some BS suspensions next year so the battle was not really to beat anyone because you don't have the power to do that. Michigan, as a member, gave The B1G the power to do what they did and The B1G was intent on doing it one way or another.

The loss is when the punishment came. That's it. I don't like and it's a bullshit scandal mixed with a bigger bullshit punishment but it was always happening. That's what so few here want to understand. Also, heads up but The NCAA isn't gonna pass on it either. It's just naive and wishful thinking that they'll come back with a pass or very weak Level 3 stuff. They'll drop as much as they can on Michigan.

Anyway, it was a losing fight to begin with because they waited to hit back in any way at all until after the larger PR battle was lost. This shit began and UM said nothing for two weeks as nut shot after nut shot came out each day they stayed silent. This allowed the exaggerated, BS, fake outrage to build and that very outrage led to this suspension. So choosing to fight when they did was bad enough but to do it and then back down now is worse...unless a new factor was added in. A factor like an upper-staff member being involved or the league outright saying that you will not play in a B1GCG no matter what if you keep going and lose the TRO.

When there was a risk previously unknown or not on the table added to their math, Michigan decided to fold. That's it. Maybe it's for the best but probably not. Either way, the first thing that has to happen starting two years ago is BASIC BACKGROUND CHECKS ON ALL PROSPECTIVE HIRINGS. This shit has been ridiculous under Harbaugh. Really bad. Second, you actually start the dossier of dirt that you pretended to have. Better late than never. Third, start getting lawyers and Michigan politicians ready for a fight with both the league and NCAA in the future because it may be needed. Don't be caught off guard again. Other than that, take your lumps and just go win. Nobody will give a shit if you just go win.

This might be one of the most logical comments I've seen.

After having the night to process what happened it sure seems like they cut a deal to reduce whatever more punishment they had planned or didn't have planned yet.

I can handle losing but this shit is just embarrassing because as long as we're alive and watching Michigan there will be people calling them cheaters.  Its going to suck hearing it too.

Signs or no signs they just need to go out there and win.

The only villain I see here is Petitti. I haven't lost respect for anyone because I don't know what went down -- all opinions put forth in this thread and others are just opinions, most of them fueled by anger and seem to be worst case scenarios. I'll wait for the documentary to come out, with actual interviews with the real people who are speaking on the record (or JUB's book with people willing to do the same. To hell with unnamed sources). And most importantly, I'll support Michigan football until they have unequivocally shown, with provable facts, that they don't deserve my support.

RibbleMcDibble

November 17th, 2023 at 8:20 AM ^

It doesn't even matter if the coaches knew and that is the problem. I get why Michigan didn't take the full on grey area defense, because you aren't dealing with sane entities in the NCAA and the Big Ten, but nothing that happened is actually egregiously against any rule and even if you want to argue that it is, it should be nothing more than a fine, a suspension for Stalions for any in-person games and a re-wording of the rule.

I am functionally a CEO of my organization (similar to Harbaugh is CEO of the football team). If one of my low level employees commits a crime or breaks the rules and I find out, it is my job to suspend them or fire them. I do not ALSO get suspended for their actions. If I did I would be a victim.

Red is Blue

November 17th, 2023 at 8:31 AM ^

But it's more complicated than that.  Suppose your employee does something without your direct knowledge, but the action is not discouraged (or even worse encouraged) by the culture at your company.   You could be responsible.

Suppose you employee bribes someone.  Is it clear that bribery is not okay?  Or are the guard rails against bribery weak or non-existent?

I was responding to the above hypothetical with an example where a boss could be held culpable.  Nothing in my response was meant that this applies in the Michigan case.

I accept your premise but reject its relevance. No one anywhere has said this was accepted or encouraged in the football culture.  On the contrary we have mounds of evidence that Harbaugh runs a very tight, ethical, rule abiding organization.

A private investigator secretly investigated for a year? Harbaugh has had his personal phone and 〽️ computers scoured by the B1G, FBI, NCAA and presumably the University itself.  All we have is two accusations with not one piece of supporting evidence.

First, Harbaugh paid a 10$ tip he forgot about to a local establishment that legally comped a couple cheeseburgers   Remember Harbaugh was suspended for forgetting, not for the actions.

Second, a rogue staffer privately funded a debatably legal but certainly “unsportsmanlike” sign deciphering strategy without any support or knowledge from anyone (read rogue)

I would put that track record up against any organization under similar investigations.

Not sure how negligence by the CEO is a relevant argument in this discussion. Rather, the very notion that he has been suspended for 6 games under this premise is borderline criminal.

What Football? You think these players and coaches are motivated by what BoR and Admin has done? No. You know the excitement you saw last week? It won't be there this week. Now they are fighting against all opponents, media and their own admin and BoR. These are just kids. UM just accepted that they cheated. Fuck that.

That's a ridiculous take.. The kids will be fire up." Standing on all 10, ready to fight".... You can be mad and kick the trash can at work if it makes you feel better but lets not doubt these men "they wont be motivated" get the fuck out of here   These men still have all their goals in front of them.

Petitti is an ass, and needs to be fired yesterday. However, if he's ruining your college football experience, take a step back for a second.

Michigan has its best team in decades, maybe ever and has steamrolled everyone. They appear to be significantly better than Ohio State this year. Whether or not Harbaugh is on the sidelines this is a well-coached, focused team. They will win out and make the playoffs. Take a breath, and enjoy the fact that Ryan Day will have a losing record against two Michigan coaches instead of one.

Toby Flenderson

Stealing from Raj on Twitter. There are three possible reasons for this outcome.

 1) More incriminating information has since been uncovered (not outlandish, as the investigation has been ongoing),

2) The UM litigation strategy was  to bluff and hope the Big Ten would capitulate;

3) UM thought it best to simply settle and move on

unWavering

November 17th, 2023 at 8:13 AM ^

It's pretty clearly #3. The league probably threatened more action against the team if Michigan didn't accept the suspension. I'm guessing Harbaugh is confident enough in his team and staff to pull out the Ws. He will still be game planning and that's probably good enough.

Just put it behind us for the year and be done with it.

Toby Flenderson

November 17th, 2023 at 8:20 AM ^

that’s my hope. Over the weekend I had some buddies who are lawyers visit, and I asked them over drinks about the scenario and likelihood of the TRO being granted. They aren’t big sports guys but very smart, and they said “yeah…I don’t see how a judge would grant one under those circumstances”.

Of course, they are also only two lawyers.

WayOfTheRoad

November 17th, 2023 at 8:42 AM ^

It's not clearly just #3. Some combo of 2 & 3 is basically a guarantee at this point and it being 1, 2 & 3 is entirely possible.

Though, I think #3 is the one that mattered most. I've been saying that 1 & 3 are the most likely factors (maybe both) but #3 alone would be enough to probably make Jim himself want to end it. The B1G has the authority and votes to ban Michigan from the B1GCG if they made it. If you lose the TRO (shit, even if you win it depending on details) they can just send another team in your place. That risk alone is probably worth backing down and taking the suspension.

But Michigan absolutely tried to bluff their way out of it and ate shit. Clearly.

three_honks

November 17th, 2023 at 12:10 PM ^

Maybe the B1G found something on the order of the Kansas or Tennessee violation, and wants to sweep it under the rug because it's Too Big To File.  That level of violation doesn't get pursued.

(Of course I think the chances are very low, but my cynical side has considered it.  I'm grasping at straws to make sense of the capitulation.)

GPCharles

I strongly believe there is more here than meets the eye and that Michigan decided to play the long game.

I am willing to wait and see how this all plays out.

dragonchild

November 17th, 2023 at 8:12 AM ^

The thing that confuses me about those supporting the capitulation is that it "ends the investigation".

You mean, the one that was never even started?  Wow, what a deal!

And even taking that at face value, all it does is end this "investigation".  Michigan will have lost their HC for half a season over fucking burgers and a 600-page manifesto guy.  Apparently it is extremely easy to hit Michigan with magical parking tickets that keep putting Harbaugh in Sing Sing for three weeks, and Michigan just rolls over.  So, what "WORST SCANDAL IN THE HISTORY OF THE BIG TEN" are we gonna get hit with next month?  Because even if we beat OSU without our HC, Day and his PI firm ain't gonna stand around and watch Michigan advance through the postseason without launching another torpedo or two.

Ernis

November 17th, 2023 at 9:25 AM ^

Right, as I said in another comment, their "investigation" was a couple pictures and articles in the public domain which didn't conclusively demonstrate anything at all. With that standard of investigation justifying this level of punishment, there is no bottom to the depravity we should expect from our conference's malevolent governance.

RibbleMcDibble

November 17th, 2023 at 8:13 AM ^

The goal right now should be to make this guy look like the idiot he is in public.

For instance, he should have to answer, in-person, why he isn't pushing to ban sign-stealing if its a player safety issue. He should be made to answer why he cares about the well-being of Michigan's opponents, but not Michigan's players. He should be made to answer how this is a competitive advantage if everyone is doing it. He should be asked what rule it is, exactly, that Michigan has broken. He should be asked what his response will be if other schools are found to be "cheating" extensively, such as paying players outside of NIL restrictions.

Guys like this get to hide behind carefully worded statements, but when they get put under pressure in a loaded public setting, they shatter and look like the porcelain pipsqueaks they really are.

Also, if Michigan has anything on Ohio State paying players outside of NIL, it needs to be dropped Monday. To be frank, I don't care if nothing happens officially, I just want the evidence so that Ohio State fans can be blasted with it and Michigan fans can mockingly tell them none of their victories count over the last 20 year.
