"By your analogy we actually…

"By your analogy we actually take samples of these insects, set up camps for months to years, and make our presence known.  We leave remnants behind, including surveillance materials and gear, because we plan on returning.  A better analogy would be if humans only studied butterflies by zipping by them in wingsuits as they buzzed around in the air."

While we do set up camps for months/years by these insects in the rainforest they in no way have the capacity to KNOW there is a human presence there. That's my whole point. There could very well be a massive intelligent presence studying us but our capacity to see and understand their equipment would be extremely limited, just like the insects and butterflies that we study.

"So unless a being has been able to develop FTL travel (in which case they've also likely cracked numerous other previously-rock solid notions of physics and biology), that's a 2.5M year one-way trip.  Maybe that's happened and I'd love to be proven wrong, but that feels like a stretch."

What's more likely, that we have reached the pinnacle of understanding of this universe's physics? Or that we really aren't that special and there are means/methods of "travelling" distances that we as mammal primates can't comprehend. An intelligence hundreds of thousands, or millions of years advanced from us would very likely be doing things that we would think of as magic.

It's probably not that our…

It's probably not that our understanding of physics is "completely wrong" - more likely that our understanding of physics is completely primitive. We simply have a lot more to learn.

Um we literally go to remote…

Um we literally go to remote areas of the rainforest to study insects... I don't think trying to understand the hypothetical motives of a hypothetical being much more advanced than us is really good reasoning. It's also quite possible that it's only our most advanced pilots/radar systems that are able to document these things in the sky (whatever they are).

This beat writer reported that Juwan Howard took a cell phone out mid-game, had somebody tweet back that it did not look like a cell phone but rather a player sheet, the writer then DOUBLED DOWN saying it appeared to be a cell phone (because that's great journalism), then UM clarified that it was in fact a player sheet. Anything for clicks eh

UM clarified that Juwan Howard did NOT take a cell phone out, rather it was a player card/sheet. Really not sure why Brendan Quinn would report it as such without getting all the facts first.

Can he play DT more specifically?

That's definitely an interesting quote, but I'm still a little confused why "alignment" with boosters and administration would have that huge of an impact on on-the-field football performance? What does this exactly mean and why would Herm Edwards and Mack Brown be such good examples of "it"?

Lol that's twice now you've…

Lol that's twice now you've referred to my "emotional" comment. The facts are what they are. The past few years have seen a fairly consistent downward trajectory culminating in one of the worst Michigan teams we've ever seen (first time losing to an 0-5 team, biggest halftime deficit at home ever etc.).

Interesting take considering…

Interesting take considering this year's team is likely worse than any teams Rodriguez or Hoke fielded.

I just bought a PS4 this…

I just bought a PS4 this spring and I'm really glad I did since I have access to all this generation's greatest games (Spiderman and Horizon Zero Dawn are my favs so far) at cheaper prices. I'll get a PS5 at some point, but I still have hundreds of hours worth of play time on my PS4. Looking forward to the new Miles Morales game!

Ad's what?

Yeah it's honestly part of…

Yeah it's honestly part of what makes this whole thing so dang weird and fascinating. The frickin guitarist from Blink-182 somehow got involved with a bunch of former government officials and created this group "To The Stars Academy" - they were the ones to originally leak these videos which have since been confirmed as legit. So there's obviously credibility here.

Even more interesting is the To The Stars Academy actually entered into a cooperative research agreements with the United States Army: https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/30498/the-army-wants-to-verify-to-the-stars-academys-fantastic-ufo-mystery-material-claims

I like to think they're all on some interplanetary safari, just checking us out for the hell of it.

"Look at these little primates. They've nearly colonized their entire planet. OH SHIT they're using propulsion to fling themselves into the sky haha how primitive"

Pistol squats!

Pistol squats!

Heck yeah! Weighted…

Heck yeah! Weighted calisthenics is the shit.

I know there's this stigma…

I know there's this stigma that bodyweight exercises don't build muscle but that's completely false. Resistance is resistance! You could get years of muscle building/training in with just a pull-up and dip bar (could get both for under $100). IMO these compound exercises that focus on moving your weight through space are actually more effective than gym weights/machines.

The way he phrased it is hilarious... "Fauci's crew" lmaooo like this 80 year old infectious disease expert has some kind of nefarious crew

Here's how I see it. I'm…

Here's how I see it. I'm either going to get the vaccine or the virus (if I don't get vaccinated I will likely eventually get it as will most people).

What would I rather subject my body to: a vaccine (however rushed) that's gone through the clinical trials process and deemed effective and safe? Or a novel disease that we don't know everything about and don't know what, if any long term side effects there are? I'm choosing vaccine everyday in this scenario.

Hey just dropping in to say…

Hey just dropping in to also say that you don't need access to a gym or even weights to build muscle and strength! I've completely changed my physique/strength levels through simple bodyweight training. Stick to compound exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, dips, squats and lunges, stay consistent (2-3 times a week) and you will build muscle.

Literally why are you…

Literally why are you getting downvoted? This is how science works. Results must be independently replicated. A single study is a single data point.

With no sports to watch and…

With no sports to watch and more free time, I got super into bodyweight fitness during quarantine. Pull-ups, dips, push-ups etc. I feel better and more athletic and my posture and golf game have improved.

Where is this idea that we…

Where is this idea that we might be reaching herd immunity coming from? Every study I've come across has put total percentage of the US population with antibodies at around 5%; studies coming out of the hardest hit region in the country (NYC) indicate perhaps 20-25% with antibodies.

https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg24632873-000-how-many-of-us-are-likely-to-have-caught-the-coronavirus-so-far/

The fact is that we are nowhere close to "herd immunity" and a drop in cases should be attributed much more to social distancing than "fewer hosts."

I'm sorry but any AD or…

I'm sorry but any AD or university faculty member who "plans" to have the students infected with a virus shouldn't have a job. And in no way should this be a controversial statement.

That's where I'm at. Like…

That's where I'm at. Like sure the death rate might be very low for those under 40 but at the same time this is a NOVEL disease. This isn't something that's just part of the regular human repertoire of diseases (yet). We don't know all the negative effects long term or otherwise of being infected with this virus.

And more and more data is showing that this disease has an infection fatality rate of close to 1%. That is wildly worse than almost any other pathogen that people in this country are exposed to on a regular basis. But as long as people get their football I guess...

I bought my first PS4 right…

I bought my first PS4 right as the pandemic started too (never gamed too much before). Haven't tried any sports games yet, but so far RDR2 and Spider-man PS4 have both been remarkable to play.

Most studies are converging…

Most studies are converging on an IFR of perhaps .5-.8%. The IFR for the flu is estimated at about .01% (at least 50 times less lethal than COVID), so this thing is definitely more than just a "notch above the seasonal flu." The seasonal flu doesn't overwhelm hospitals like COVID-19 does.

I very much encourage people to read this article from Scientific American that takes a look at the flu vs. COVID-19 comparison: https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/comparing-covid-19-deaths-to-flu-deaths-is-like-comparing-apples-to-oranges/

But every model has not been…

But every model has not been wrong? 80,000 deaths in 7 weeks and that's with an extreme decrease in overall human interaction around the country. The virus isn't going anywhere, it's far too widespread and contagious. We're heading into the warm months and still averaging nearly 2,000 deaths a day from this.

Right - while we probably…

Right - while we probably won't see offices eliminated entirely we'll definitely see an expansion of at home work with people going in when they need to be there in person and doing what they can from home.

I didn't say "quickly"

I didn't say "quickly"

Overall death toll may turn…

Overall death toll may turn out to be over a million (after however many months/years this ends up lasting). The model cited by the White House had been predicting 60,000 deaths by August 4th and has since updated their projection to 134,000 deaths by August 4th. The US just recorded 2,500 deaths yesterday and that's with the majority of the country still in lockdown.

Everything you said is true…

Everything you said is true but there are plenty of good scientific reasons to be confident that an effective/safe vaccine can and will be produced. Scaling the vaccine up to meet the demand will be difficult so I would assume first priority will be given to more at risk members of the populace.

Right, there are certainly…

Right, there are certainly excess deaths that point to the outbreak starting as early as January. However for the average person who experienced symptoms back in January, the chances that they had COVID are still extremely low.

Take for instance the hardest hit state in the country in New York. I've seen some antibody estimates that about 12% of the state has already had COVID. What would the percentage have been back in January or early February? Let's just say 3% for the sake of this argument - so that's 600,000 people with COVID in New York state in January (probably a high end estimate). And with an estimated 90% of cases being asymptomatic that leaves 60,000 people who could have been experiencing symptoms that early - or far less than 1% of the population. And with the dozens of other influenza and coronaviruses that are common in our population that makes it extremely unlikely that you or anyone you know had COVID even as late as January or February.

ok boomer

ok boomer

A lot of people saying they…

A lot of people saying they had symptoms this winter need to remember that the flu season this year was also very bad and obviously vastly more widespread than COVID-19. If you think you've had COVID due to symptoms you've experienced it's much more likely you had one of the other common viruses that continuously circulate in our population.

1. What method do you enjoy…

1. What method do you enjoy the most (archery, shotgun, rifle)?

Can't beat archery hunting - truly nothing better than sitting with your bow in the woods on an early November morning. In the past couple years I've gotten into muzzleloader hunting as well. It's fun to tinker with different bullets/powder combinations to see what fires best from your gun.

2. Favorite quarry?

While it may be sacrilege to deer hunting, I have to say that I enjoy wild turkey hunting the most. I love being in the warming spring woods, being able to watch everything come alive around me. Also, turkeys are just badass animals to see in the wild and especially up close. Contrary to what some people might assume, these animals are incredibly wary and smart and they have some of the best vision in the animal kingdom.

3. Bucket list hunt/location?

Something out west someday

You might have to be willing to travel a couple hours up north if you want to get into some trout.

1. What's your favorite method of fishing?

Conventional spinning/baitcasting has always been my "go-to" but I'd love to get into fly fishing. Anybody have any decent fly rod recommendations for a beginner?

2. What's your favorite species to target?

I've always had a soft spot for Northern Pike - still have to go after Musky.

3. Fish in solitude or in the company of others?

Mostly in solitude. Nothing beats spending an afternoon by yourself wading the Huron River.

4. Dream fishing trip?

Canadian fly in pike/walleye trip

Selling alcohol inside the…

Selling alcohol inside the stadium may actually have the effect of fewer belligerent drunk people. Right now a lot of people binge drink right before going in simply because they know they're not getting any more once inside. If people knew they could get another beer once inside, they're less likely to slam some drinks right beforehand. And once inside how likely are people going to get super shitfaced off of $10 low ABV lagers? Not likely.

I'm always skeptical of the…

I'm always skeptical of the claim that some of our guys aren't giving full effort because they have an eye toward the NFL. Does any other team in the country, including the OSUs and Alabamas of the world see this as an issue? No. Coaching is the issue, not effort.

Hate to bring up Urban Meyer…

Hate to bring up Urban Meyer again on this board, but I remember him breaking down film a few weeks back and he said something to the extent of "first thing we did each week was make a list of the 11 best players on offense and defense, then it was our job to make sure that those 11 saw the field (i.e. if we had 2 tight ends in that list then we would figure out a way to play them"

College football is a game where more and more it seems like you need to get your elite talent on the field and just let them ball. Definitely seems like we let some of our talent ride the bench for too long.

I mean, they already gave up…

I mean, they already gave up 359 rushing yards so it's not like we'd be taking a giant risk by playing the freshman.

I wish we ran the style of…

I wish we ran the style of defense that MSU runs. Their D has had bad games in the past (especially when going up against uber talented teams), but I feel like their success is far more steady/consistent than ours.

Edit: I feel like their defensive success is more replicable week to week even with their "lower rated talent"

Like good teams get past that. Everyone has injuries and shit calls go against them.

But didn't you just post…

But didn't you just post above that the 2 QB system actually worked at Alabama? Isn't that an example of "one of these so-called "creative" plays to actually be creative"?

As an aside, the amount of hand wringing over our new OC experimenting with some different packages in the home opener against lower level competition is mind boggling to me.
