OT- PS5 Released today

Submitted by canzior on November 12th, 2020 at 7:27 AM

X Box dropped yesterday(?) and the PS5 is here today.  Of course they are sold out everywhere.  Walmart will have them available online at 12, 3, 6 and 9 pm.

My old projector blew up right after the Minnesota game ended (which maybe was a sign of bad things to come) and I'm plan to get a new 4K projector to go along with the PS5, whether today or in a couple months when they restock.

Anyone else jumping in on the new consoles yet?

No.  I guess it's possible I'd reconsider if there were a new release of ncaa football, but even then I don't have the time for video games anymore.   Pretty neat to see the realism in the games that kids get to play nowadays, although growing up with the Atari and Nes was the best imho.

I gave up on that dream years ago.  I typically buy Madden in April or May when the price is about $15 and play it for a couple weeks or so. I'm not a big gamer, I very rarely play online, but there are a lot of games that can really draw your attention. Horizon Zero Dawn was addictive for me. But that was 2 kids ago. I work from home, so I expect when they go back to daycare, I can squeeze some time in during the day.

Don't get me wrong, there are games that come along from time to time that I really enjoy and play from start to finish like the Zelda game on the Nintendo Switch.  Also spent some time playing the kids in super smash brothers brawl and Mario kart, but all those games tap into that nostalgia factor for me.

I miss playing my old 2600. My best friend (and neighbor) had the 5200 which I was so jealous of. When I finally got an NES, it was like a whole new world. Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, Tetris... good old days. Later teen years it was all 007 Goldeneye, all the time. We'd have four player marathons in my basement for days.

I'm looking to get a PS5 for the kid's Christmas, but doubt I'll have much luck since they've been sold out for months already.  Never been a big gamer, myself, never saw the point in it.  Seems like a giant, huge time suck - time that I'd rather spend doing something else if I have it.  We each have our thing!

So quick question for the actual gamers out there - which would be best for a 9 yr old boy, the PS5 or XBox? Just in a general sense, anyway, not really interested in details.  I suspect there's largely no difference aside from brand loyalty type things...

This is anecdotal, but my 19, 14, and 6 year old boys all enjoy the Nintendo switch, but that may largely be a function of not having the dedicated time in their schedules to occupy a whole tv with a console game.

I do remember buying an xbox once a few years back that bricked on me so I've never considered spending an extra dime on one.  I've always found Sony products to be well engineered and built and would opt for the PS5 if I were choosing between the two though.

I like it because it's a time suck. With 2 kids and wife, I don't get out of the house much and with the quality and variety of games it's a lot of fun. Especially since I am spending less time watching non-Michigan college football.

Playstation has more exclusive titles historically. That is likely the biggest difference that he'd care about.

Really the important questions are:

How many games will he play at a time?

Would you rather own a disk, than "have access to the game through the internet"?

And what kind of TV will he game on; and if not 4k, will you upgrade within 5 years?

Storage is the big problem this gen but my 11yr old is mostly fortnight and maybe a game or two on top of that. I'm putting it on a 1080p projector plus I also have good connection so going with the diskless Xbox at $299 worked for us.

Not into gaming anymore. The last system I had was a PS2. I got my first apartment in 2004 and I’d have my cousins over for Madden tournaments. My George Foreman grill was essential!! Good times

I just bought a PS4 this spring and I'm really glad I did since I have access to all this generation's greatest games (Spiderman and Horizon Zero Dawn are my favs so far) at cheaper prices. I'll get a PS5 at some point, but I still have hundreds of hours worth of play time on my PS4. Looking forward to the new Miles Morales game!

I'm going with the Series X. I have a lot of online and real life friends who have the console so switching would almost completely eliminate the option of me playing with people i know.

I will say that Sony does get better game exclusives, but that's about the only difference. I also remember Sony/Playstation network getting hacked in 2011. It comprised all users personal information and put the whole network down for 23 days.

Edit: Anyone play PUBG, Rocket League, or PGA 2k21 for xbox?

Same here, I've had "online" friends on the Live platform since 2003 and, even after months or years with not much time to game, it's never difficult to find them.

I haven't played RL lately, and I went with Warzone since I was hoping for "more tactical" (jokes on me) and was actually thinking of PGA this week for the masters

Xbox is probably the stronger machine this year and game pass is a fantastic product. Its basically netflix for gaming. Sony historically does get better exclusives but Microsoft just grabbed Blizzard and really you have to care passionately about some single player games for that to make a difference. Really just go with whatever your friends have, playing online to stay connected with friends is easily the primary reason I still game.

I'll purchase a PS5 when the opportunity to get one exists.  Planning on getting the digital edition.  I've had an XBox One for a few years, and it was fine, but I'm looking forward to not having to pay a monthly subscription for online features.

So...you need Playstation Plus to play online for the Playstation. With CDKeys.com you can get a subscription for about $40 per year. It also comes with 2 free games every month. 1 usually fairly popular game and 1 indie game.

Only thing I'd say about the digital edition is that you will only be able to get games from the PS Store. Amazon has discounts on new titles, sometimes up to 20% and there's always the discount bins.  You will be able to pick up ps4 games cheap to play also but only a disc.

going to wait on buying one since the only game i really want is spider-man and that's available for ps4. however, i did finally buy a 4k projector (well, faux-4k) and it's amazing.

I love video games but I also have a 23 month old running around. Last time I played a video game? Last Christmas, wife took the daughter to the in-laws for half the day. Played Death Stranding. Seemed alright but got a little bored 3 or so hours in doing the same thing over and over.

I've been trying to an order in for the PS5 since the pre-orders began a few months back.  Stayed up last night until past midnight trying to find a retailer with a stock.  Still no luck.  I'll try again for the preset Walmart times today.

I don't understand why Sony is making it so hard for us to give them our money.

Two reasons why you're having a hard time; there are bots that buy up all the stock online when a retailer gets them, also they sold more preorders of the ps5 than the first three months of selling the ps4 at it's launch.

I got lucky and just stopped by gamestop the day they announced the price and they opened up preorders early.

Every launch from here on out will be like this because video gaming is now mainstream.

Was able to secure my Xbox Series S* at noon on Tuesday from walmart.

Anyone interested might be willing to do the same for the PS5.

I even got same day in store pick up :)

*moving my to boys to a projector and since it's only 1080p I don't need the Series

the faster loading times, especially with quick resume on xbox, already have made that a worthwhile $299 investment.

Already was playing the new Watch Dogs but a whole new game with ray traced reflections!

The Xbox is on the level of a solid gaming pc now, but I have a gaming pc i built so idk if ill get it.  All the same games come out on pc since Microsoft makes the Xbox.

If college football comes back then ill buy lol

I wish I was, but was just being silly. Although, I did have a friend who used to make a killing flipping new game consoles. Video gamers are crazy and will pay anything to have the latest and greatest - without having to wait in line or jump on some pre-sale.

Good call waiting it out. Not only for the demand side of things, but usually the first batch of consoles off the lines are shipped with glitches - which need to be resolved by applying tons of updates - or even shipping the unit back to the manufacturer for replacement. Always best to grab the units that come in the 2nd or 3rd wave of distribution.
