Will Harbaugh Change The Offense To Fit Shea Patterson's Skill Set?

Submitted by Santa Clause on

Shea has shown the ablity to move in and outside the pocket. I was wondering if Harbaugh would change the offense to a more spread/pistol look this season to maximize Shea's talents. What do you guys think?

Not very relevant to this thread but seeing this youtube video made me sad at how many times M was at the receiving end of random plays

Also that Auburn vs Alabama is now more even rivalry than M vs OSU. I want M to beat OSU so bad.

All Shea Patterson to beat those mouth breathers from the south or whoever the QB is. Lets win against those F'ers.

I've asked this question multiple times and everyone keeps ignoring it. Just 2 or 3 days ago people were saying that he wasn't even going to transfer if he wasn't going to be able to play right away. Now all of a sudden everyone's talking about it like it's a sure thing but we sitll haven't heard whether or not he'll be able to play.

IDK if I missed some news.

Spoiler alert: Nobody knows.

The assumption is that Patterson would not transfer if he was not pretty confident of being able to play right away and that Harbaugh would not be bringing him hear if Patterson would not be able to play right away.

So that's what everybody is counting on for the moment.

Posters on here were making that guess, but I don't think it ever came from anyone who talked to Patterson. Now Sam Webb has come out said he will transfer without knowing whether he'll be able to play right away. Most likely that was his plan all along.

Here’s how I see this going. If he comes, the ncaa will make him sit a year. So Peters is the starter next year. I think he wins the heisman, goes in the first round of the draft next year. The Patterson repeats this feat the following year, and Dylan steps in for the third and fourth years and wins two heismans.

I think Harbaugh will open it up more Patterson.  I think the coaches would love to run more spread concepts but just coudn't because of personnel.

Am I the only one that is reluctant to go get Patterson? This would be basically 3 out of 4 years Harbaugh has rolled out a transfer QB.  I really like Peters and would hate to see him leave.   I get the competition is good argument but the optics look a little bad to me.  I wouldn't say I'm exactly against getting Patterson but it just looks a little wonky to me from the outside.  Once again, I'm sure the coaches know more than me but I hope we are able to keep our other QB's even if Patterson comes aboard.  Honestly, I'm not sure he beats out Peters or DMac.  Harbaugh's system isn't easy and I'm not sure you can just roll in and be the man.  Either way, it gives me something to follow during the off season.

It's silly to hold his bringing Rudock in against Harbaugh in some way. Who would ever use that against him in recruiting? Or using a backup transfer QB who was in his 3rd season here? It really makes no sense. How would we do in 2015 with Morris starting and how would that help recruiting?

The idea that he will stick with the QBs on the roster no matter how much it hurts the team won't help recruit any other position.

Further, if I was Peters and read this blog, I'd be insulted that so many posters think I'll transfer just because of increased competition..

I'm not saying that it is wrong to want to get the best QB out on the field.  I want to win games and you need the best players to do that.  However, I don't think it is unrealistic to think this could be brought up when we are recruiting against other schools.  There is this idea that you commit, put in the work, pay your dues and get your chance if you are good enough.  Other schools could certainly float the idea that the first chance Harbaugh gets to go get some outsider that he likes better he will do it.  I'm not saying it is fair or right but could certainly be spun that way.  Peters by all accounts has been a wonderful student-athlete and is getting ready to head into his 3rd year in the program after taking a beating for his team this year, and the fanbase has fallen in love with the idea of chasing some kid that didn't commit to us that we like better.  I want to win but feel like there should be a component of loyalty.  I know this is big buisness and I sound naive but I wouldn't love it if I was Peters.

You can't run a program worrying about what other coaches might say. What kind of QBs do you want to recruit? Those with confidence or those who are afraid of being beaten out by better players? Those that expect to get the starting job just by waiting their turn?

I've said it before, putting QBs into the NFL and winning will help QB recruiting far more than anything else. Recruits see themselves as that guy in the NFL, not the guy who got beaten out for the job. Those are the players you want anyway.

"There is this idea that you commit, put in the work, pay your dues and get your chance if you are good enough."

Is that not exactly what's happening regardless of whether or not Patterson gets brought in? The player who is good enough plays? More players just means your good enough MIGHT have to be higher, but your "good enough" was always going to have to be higher than everyone elses regardless of who that "everyone else" was/is.

We have 2 non freshmen scholarship QBs, with sophomore and freshmen eligibility. I don't want locker room chemistry tainted, I don't want QB have their confidence shook by this, and I don't want to hurt recruiting efforts. ....But we we will have 2 non freshmen QBs, with sophomore and freshmen eligibility. I trust Harbaugh and will look at the positives either way. .... but we will have 2 non-freshmen QBs on scholarship.

1. I don't actually think Patterson will beat out Peters next year. Hold me to that, guys.

2. There are tweaks to the offense that adapt to the quarterbacks--you saw this year they adjusted the offense to match the QB. But this can be overstated. Patterson will get more of an O'Korn-like job I think. But that's not dramatically different than Peters. It'll probably be more about what each is good at in practice--like individual plays.

I'll hold you to that for sure. If Patterson is eligible this year, Peters will ride the pine. Peters really only looked good by comparison with Speight and O'Korn's rather terrible 2017 campaigns. I like Peters a lot but he looked at least anot her year away from really making an impact against the tip teams of the NCAA.

I agree with you. Peters really wasn’t too much better than the others and didn’t even shine against bad teams. Patterson when healthy beat Alabama in a year where bama won it all. The kid is very good. I think peters will continue to improve but saying he’ll beat out Patterson next fall is a stretch.

The guy winning the Heisman Trophy this year: Baker Mayfield

The guy who led his team to the SEC Championship game: Jarrett Stidham.

This isn't a normal transfer where a guy is leaving a school because someone passed him on the depth chart.  This is a starting QB leaving because his school was hit with sanctions that he doesn't want to be a part of.

what exactly do you want from a RS freshman seeing his first action but 3-0 in dominating fashion with 4 TDs and O Ints coming into a situation with no pass-protection and a team in a complete offensive meltdown when he took over. There is a fair chance we beat Wisconsin also if he doesn’t go down. To force this into “Peters didn’t look that good anyway” is not a fit. My guess is there are about 10 coaches of big time programs hoping that Peters doesn’t take well to the Patterson situation and wants out and will be on his doorstep instantly. He looked very good under the circumstances for a kid seeing his first action.
