spartoon quinn article on Michigan Basketball culture
https://theathletic.com/5341993/2024/03/15/michigan-basketball-juwan-howard-culture/
A firm was hired to access the culture.
Jett got yelled at.
Culture of fear.
Not much substance.
Opening the possibility of a repeat of the Mel report situation - except the replacement's are external and the coaching spin cycle will have seen the best candidates already take jobs... .
That's honestly the worst outcome. They need to make a decision either way promptly. Either bring Juwan back and give him full support or fire him immediately and start the search.
Obviously most of us prefer option 2, but either is better than Mel redux.
This hits the nail on the head. The team in question finished in last place in the conference, a 15-year employee left and told you the culture is shit and your response is to hire an outside firm to try and detail just how bad the culture is? As much as I love him, Howard needed to go before the season ended and Manuel needs to go NOW.

Exactly. With Pearson at least you had a guy who was coming off a Frozen Four and was bringing in future NHL stars.
But this is WTF.
March 15th, 2024 at 10:18 AM ^
Does he have some dirt on Warde or something? Other than Warde being the personification of inaction, why is he even considering keeping Juwan? His love of the program is not enough to justify his shortcomings, and there is seemingly no upside to retaining him.
Michigan hires firms to investigate itself. OSU hires firms to investigate Michigan. Seems about right.
A firm hired to investigate OSU would undoubtedly find that the firm, itself, had been underpaid for the various external investigations Coach Day originally assigned them.

OSU hires firm to investigate OSU.
Firms response: "I just hope they don't ask us to investigate us!"
If this is the "bombshell" that has been rumored then this is pretty tame. Howard is a hot head who people are afraid to have honest conversations with. No shit, anyone with eyes could have told you that. I guess if they need this documentation to fire him then whatever, but the results on the court should have been enough.

The rumors were an Athletic article by Quinn that was going to talk about 'PR / office politics' problems in football and/or hockey. This has to be it - and frankly if the 'bombshell' is that Michigan's basketball culture sucks, well I don't think anyone in the world is going to be surprised by this
I know I don't know all the ins and outs of what goes on in the program, but to me, this still fits right in with Warde's history of inaction.
There's more than enough public results out there to justify showing Juwan the door. The three years of trending downward with the program, bad roster management, the Sanderson incident, off-court issues. Plenty of coaches have been fired for less. Chris Holtmann has just been fired, for much less, and 4x the buyout that Juwan has.
I don't really know why you need to go hire a firm to assess the team culture. To me, it feels like:
1) Kicking the can down the road because you just don't want to have to make the decision.
2) You're hoping for this firm to come back with the result you're wanting/looking for so its justification for you to keep "your guy." Or you want someone to come back and tell you how bad it is so you are forced into making the decision, but you don't want to have to decide for yourself.
3) This is the one that most resonates with me, because I used to be this way early in my career, and truthfully its something I still wrestle with. You want to "have all the facts before you make your decision." While that makes sense on its face, I remember a mentor of mine early in my career telling me "Perkis, sometimes you don't need all of the information. Sometimes you already have everything you need, and the answer is staring you right in the face. How much more of your time, my time and the team's time are you willing to waste to ultimately come to the conclusion that you can arrive at right here, right now?"

The culture assessment sounds like corporate ass covering given the complaints levied by Sanderson. I don't think you can have someone file HR complaints about toxic work environments of this nature these days without doing an outside assessment unless you want to invite a lawsuit
“Not much substance.” Then why post it?
Because it was mentioned on message boards as some type of huge article.
The insiders were wrong. Again.
8-24 is the substance. Juwan needs to go. Now I get why Jett left. To escape his psycho dad.
March 15th, 2024 at 10:13 AM ^
Wow, I guess that's a sign of how (some) Michigan fans feel about Howard, huh?
I like him. I like how much he loves being at Michigan. I want the best for him and the team. Unfortunately, that latter wish outweighs the first two, and probably requires that we move on without him.
But this is the shit that drives me crazy about sports fans and messaging boards. Calling our coach a "psycho" because he got involved in one physical altercation two years ago, and this year apparently yelled at another coach in defense of his son? Neither ideal, both problematic. But now we're calling Juwan Howard a "psycho?"
Why do I feel that if he were 24-10 and we were heading for a third seed in the NCAA tournament nobody would be calling him "psycho"?
March 15th, 2024 at 10:27 AM ^
Three known incidents threatening people say otherwise. He is the second highest paid member of the university(I think), and more crap like this is coming out.
March 15th, 2024 at 11:09 AM ^
He theatened to kill Turgeon (then Maryland coach), I don't think that is typical behavior, plus the Wisconsin and Sanderson incidents, plus the at least two times that players had to restrain him from going after referees.
March 15th, 2024 at 12:07 PM ^
- Yelled at an opposing coach he was going to kill him
- Slapped an an opposing coach
- Acted heatedly towards a staff member that resulted in that staff member feeling physically threatened
- Made physical threats towards his own (player) son in practice that left observers extremely uncomfortable
That may not meet your definition of psycho, but it strongly suggests Coach Howard has insufficient control of his temperament to be a successful employee.
March 15th, 2024 at 12:44 PM ^
I'm not going to disagree that Juwan needs to go, but the Jett left "to escape his psycho dad" is a weird take. Jett could have gone to nearly any college, but chose Michigan. He was likely always a 1 and done regardless of who his coach was. That doesn't suggest that he needed to escape his psycho dad. I think it was a bad fit and terrible for Juwan, Jett (and Jace) and Michigan to have the Howard boys playing at Michigan for Juwan. Jett was notoriously bad on defense last year and Jace's behavior obviously led to to the dust up with Sanderson this year. Kids playing for their parents at this level creates a whole host of issues surrounding the parent/child vs. player/coach dynamic. It also inherently causes other players or potential players to question whether they will be treated fairly as compared to the coach's kids.
If you have to hire a 3rd party firm to review your team culture, then you already have your answer on how the team culture is
Fire Juwan and Fire Warde so shit like this stops continuing to happen
March 15th, 2024 at 10:16 AM ^
I like Warde. Hope he sticks around and oversees another 5 football national championships, while taking the blame for everything that people are disappointed with.
We didn't win the floor exercise in women's gymnastics? Fire Warde!
March 15th, 2024 at 10:41 AM ^
Warde had nothing to do with winning the national championship. It was all Harbaugh, the coaches and the players. Warde almost hindered that with his complete unwillingness to stand up for Harbaugh thus leading to him being suspended for 6 games.
March 15th, 2024 at 12:55 PM ^
Warde had so much to do with it that he declined to attend the annual banquet
A rare Quinn article where he doesn't use a fancy word ineptly or incorrectly. Could he be getting better at his job?
I assume the Athletic just got better editors for him.
Or it's the co-author, Katie Strang.
He continues to write awkwardly. Does anyone "assemble" a meeting room?
March 15th, 2024 at 11:05 AM ^
Yeah, I suspect UM has actual conference rooms that don't require Warde Manuel to break out a hammer and some drywall beforehand or fiddling with a 200-page Ikea diagram.
In general I've found Quinn to be a perfectly average sports reporter who can't hide his biases or his desire to be taken more seriously than he is. Reading his stuff over the years has led me to just switch to "Quinn Mode" and expect the stuff to be a bit wonky.
I think the fact that he graduated to a national beat has persuaded people he's a good writer. Regardless of his, y'know, writing.
The MGoBlog crew is not only smarter, they're better writers.
March 15th, 2024 at 12:46 PM ^
You do if it's a meeting of the Avengers.
There is nothing new here. But reading what we had read before in bits and pieces in one place is ugly. What has taken place in private seems very consistent with what we have seen from Howard in the public. Someone who treats his son in front of everyone as described in the article should not be a head coach at UM.
The berating of Jett and other coaches thinking it was a bit much was new. The third party firm to investigate the culture was new.
Warde needs to hire outside consultants on what toppings to order on his pizza.
What a worthless empty suit.
He needs to stop clogging every toilet on campus.
There's not much new here though I hadn't heard the Jett story, and only recently heard about what Howard allegedly said to Turgeon. To me, as has been said below, hiring an outside firm seems like a way to delay and/or put the onus for the decision on someone outside the department.
Regarding Quinn, I'll admit I haven't everything he's written but have always thought he was a good writer and reporter. Is there a perception that he has a pro-Sparty bias?
The three most interesting takeaways for me:
1). The outside firm hired to review the culture, which again is likely to provide cover for a firing.
2). The lack of anything to move the needle to anyone who has been paying even a modicum of attention to this program for the last few years.
2a). The complete lack of discussion of anything in the Michigan AD that is not the MBB program, which the rumormongers and OSU Millerites were insisting was all coming.
3). That Quinn got a nice sitdown with Sanderson's lawyer(s).
Yeah, about what I expected and nothing really new.
I will reiterate that so much is being made from Sanderson's attorney and what he said in a letter tied to trying to get his client a severance. I'm not going to argue that the culture and team isn't bad but I also take whatever an attorney says with a grain of salt. For example, lots of coaches we've seen get physical with their players, and while that's not acceptable I also wouldn't paint it as something unexpected.
Howard needs to go but these articles are also pretty lazy in that they are just repeating the same couple of sourced material with limited intellectual curiosity or scrutiny.
Just want to say a quick hello to our rcmb lurkers who predicted this "quinn bombshell" was going to be the latest doom to MI football. Dream on losers.

Buckeye twitter is also going to be coping today
March 15th, 2024 at 11:45 AM ^
Buckeyes have created forms of cope I wouldn't have dreamed possible just six months ago.
Not much substance? I get we all want the program to do well, but that fact that Juwan is still employed is an indictment on Warde and the entire Athletics Dept.
24 hours after the team was eliminated from the B1G tourney was where I said my patience would run out, and it has. There's no reason to keep dragging this out. I was in favor of letting Juwan finish out the season, but now the choice is obvious.
March 15th, 2024 at 10:01 AM ^
Dammit Warde, you've lost Blinkin. HOW COULD YOU LET THAT HAPPEN?
You're fired.
March 15th, 2024 at 11:02 AM ^
If only.
Franz, can't you celebrate that this article came out right now when it could help push Warde to fire Howard or even get Ono's attention so he could get rid of Warde?
Rip off the bandaid, fire Howard and start the search for the next Head Coach. Include Beilein in the process.
Howard knows the game of basketball. Coaching the game, motivating his players? I don't know his skills. The only thing apparent is that he doesn't know how to control his emotional responses. Being "passionate" is one (positive) thing, being unable to control your words and actions is a large negative.
While we all appreciate the posts people make, can we please put a moratorium on the coded words and references and cleverness?
I don't have a clue what spartoon means, I must have not logged in that day to MGoBlog, These kinds of posts abound and I don't understand the need to be cute.
I'm not a boomer.
March 15th, 2024 at 11:15 AM ^
Do you know what a spartan is, and what a spittoon is? Combine the two.
I never understood hiring outside firms to do the job of highly paid administrators or executives. What a waste.
