Sherrone Moore, first black man to be Michigan head coach.

Submitted by SalvatoreQuattro on January 24th, 2024 at 6:58 PM

A monumental moment in the 144 year history of the Michigan football program. One that took far too long to come but is now here: A black man is the face of the University of Michigan’s most prominent arm.

Celebrate it. Embrace it. But most of all give Coach Moore your full support. He will need it.

Coach Moore is our Henry V now.

Once more unto the breach, gentlemen.

Go Blue.

Though he is the likely hire, I do think the thought of not going through with a true search is asinine.

If he is still the best hire after a search, thats great.

But don't just go with the easy choice, make the right choice.

We're going to be even more hamstrung by lack of NIL under Moore.  He's milquetoast compared to Harbaugh. That's not a knock on Moore personally as most people are compared to Harbaugh. Michigan is going to be a hard place to win going forward. We have to develop 3.5 stars and keep them for 5 years. Presumably some kids just came for the Harbaugh experience. Moore isn't gonna replicate that. It's a Shaw-esque down grade.

I just hope whoever replaces him as OC is the play caller as well. I'm excited to see if Moore opens things up a bit without Harbaugh over his shoulder. Will we get a little more passing spread or will we stay primarily a run focused team. My only concern is that Moore ends up being more like Shaw (OL coach, promoted to OC, promoted to HC when Harbaugh left) because that did not work out well for Stanford. Otherwise... you're the man now, dawg!

Moore needs to give up at least the OL duties and being the first time he’s in total charge 7 days a week not just one maybe the OC duties !!!

I think we should hire Moore unless you can land a huge name, but man there are huge risks. It could be a spectacular failure. Dudes never been a head coach (and no 3 game days from 9 am - 3 pm don’t count)

If he's hired chalk me up as skeptical.  He is a first time head coach, who sat in for 3 hours on (4) Saturdays this year running the game plan that Jim put in place during the week.  Now he's supposed to be the man?  With no real experience being the man?  This smells like ND's hiring of what's his name.  And they've been mediocre at best.  Sherrone seems like an INCREDIBLE person, and maybe an incredible coach?  But who knows how he will fair being the CEO of the state's biggest athletic program.   I'd prefer a tried and true coach.  But if Sherrone gets it, I won't be mad.  Just worried.

I do think Moore is a potentially huge risk. Comparatively inexperienced OC taking over when the HC and DC (and probably S&C, special teams, maybe more) walk out the door after a national championship, coming back for year one with a comparatively depleted roster and the conference landscape about to change mightily, and needing to break in a new starting QB...

I think the continuity will be a good thing short-term. And gosh do our fanbase and recruiting not need another weirdo coaching search and mass exodus under a new/unknown regime. But long term, does this work out? The potential is certainly there, but I do think it's fair to say that it doesn't immediately feel like a slam dunk.

Hopefully we can use the Chargers as our major league affiliate to take their coaches on for seasoning the way that the Ravens would send us loaners. Same goes for drafting our players.

No coach has ever won a national title and dipped immediately to the NFL.

Normally you get a boost in recruiting but Harbaugh is the only one who capitalized on the national championship.

Now that he's gone the national championship essentially goes with him. They'll say Michigan didn't win it Jim Harbaugh did.

I'm  sick as sick can be.

It definitely does suck a bit although people will shit on you if you even question Harbaugh's NFL dream return for a second. Taking Minter with him makes it hurt 10x more.

Most schools would be like "Championship! Yeah let's build on it! Recruiting boost!"

Michigan is like "Championship! Coaches gone? 1st time HC replacement? Hope the players stay?!?!

1. If they do go this route, don't do the dumb Dave Brandon thing and get Moore to agree and trot him out before contract terms are ironed out.

2. Pretty sure UM HR has to list the job as open, so they can't just announce tonight.

I prefer to go into the breach.  Go Blue!  Congrats to Moore and the coaches and players who achieved the summit and those who stay.

Jim leaves us in decent shape and takes his show on the road.  I could use an emotional rescue.  Sincere thanks and all due respect.

Bolts uni's are about the best thing about the charger's historically.  I am glad the NFL has more appeal than other pro sports and is watchable.

Love this. Way overdue as an aside to hiring the best man.

Serious questions about how negotiations with Harbaugh were handled. Rumors only. But rumors he was not granted immunity for NCAA stuff and then he was in a desperate bid to keep him..

Serious questions..

It's pretty disappointing that you present a wonderful guy like Sherrone this way.

It's a big turn-off and says much about you, not him.

He deserved this job for a multitude of reasons, all by his performance.

Sad post.

Stanford didn't fall off much when Harbaugh left and David Shaw took over. Hopefully that pattern will be repeated. (Maybe even reach out to Shaw, if the Harbaugh doesn't take him with the Chargers).

Never been a head coach other than interim status for Harbaugh's suspension.

Given the past few years and before Harbaugh the idea that everyone is ok with a first time head coach at ANY level to take over a historic program is hilarious.

Coaching searches previously so many people shit on candidates for never having head coach experience but here we are saying it is fine for a first time head coach who barely has OC experience because of certain conditions is flat out hilarious.

One that took far too long to come to? Were there black candidates specifically passed over for the job when we had an opening? If not, then this is a really stupid statement to make and you're virtue signaling. If there's a situation I'm not aware of where we passed over a qualified black HC, ignore all of the above.

If it is Moore and Jim has endorsed him, I hopefully he will contribute a good sum of his salary to fund our NIL to give Moore the best chance to succeed.

I really don’t understand the anti Moore crowd?  The dude just stared down the two biggest programs/coaches not named Michigan from the big ten and Did Not flinch once.  Coached those games like the dominant coach, going for the throat every chance he got (and again not flinching).  Day and Franklin both flinched big time several times in those games, whether it was bone headed conversion attempts or punting at mid field when you need less than a yard.  I’ll take the new guy on the block that just punched everyone in the face that he got the chance to at his time as hc, and pummeled them with multiple body shots especially Penn St.  I personally love his lack of hesitancy in those situations.  It’s gotta make sense everywhere including keeping the band together right?!?

I remember when Harbaugh was hired some people on social media were saying it was racist because Michigan never had a black coach, and that they should have hired Charlie Strong instead. I sincerely hope those were trolls and not actual people. Anyway, Moore is fitting of the honor of first (full-time) black coach. To suggest he is only being considered because of the color of his skin is ludicrous.
