Detroit News.

"According to court records, Scruggs also was arrested Oct. 27, 2013, for allegedly driving under the influence in Kirkland, Washington, when he was with the Seattle Seahawks and entered a not-guilty plea in court. He pleaded down to reckless driving on June 11, 2014.

While a senior football player at the University of Louisville, Scruggs was arrested on a DUI charge in 2011 and dismissed from the team before the Belk Bowl, according to several reports."

If he's going to drink?  Here's a radical idea for Greg:  STOP. DRINKING.

I get that it's fun to get tipsy but drinking is not a need (put the jokes away, this guy just endangered lives*) and this is his third arrest for the same crime.  As far as I'm concerned he's morally lost his right to drink.  We can't take away his bottle but him taking a swig is a different situation from that of a responsible person.

Also, Greg, didn't you just get hired and isn't it spring training right now?  What the fuck are you doing on the sauce in the first place??  Most P5 football coaches be working long hours right now and that's even if they're not transitioning.

Uber?  If he's already gone and done it, sure, but he should be as dry as the Bonneville Salt Flats.

*and if you earnestly think booze is a need, you too have a drinking problem

I think you hit on a few important things here...

He was 8 days into a new job, and this was the weekend before Spring Practice is set to begin.  that he felt it necessary or appropriate to be out and impaired at 3am raises a red flag or two...that he decided to get behind the wheel raises a couple of more...that it's not the first time he's made that bad decision raises still more.  I can't speak to how much he may or may not value the opportunity that was/may still be in front of him, but from the sideline it looks like he may be having trouble prioritizing, for whatever reason.

For some people (self included), getting put in handcuffs, spending a night in jail, and having to humble one's self in front of a judge (and adhere to all conditions set forth by said judge to stay out of jail) is enough to motivate drastic life changes.  Others don't find doing all of that only once to be enough to motivate those changes.

I'd be surprised if Moore decides to keep him on, but either way, I hope he's able to address whatever it is he needs to address to live a healthy, happy life going forward.

I assume they'll just let him go and try to hire someone else.  It sucks but this is his second DUI-related arrest and at this point I don't see any real value bringing him back after such a short time as a staff member.  An unfortunate decision by him but I don't see Moore wanting to take that type of risk on a guy this early in his tenure.

I would imagine that, like many corporations, the University would take an exceedingly dim view of someone using the departmental accounts for personal expenses though. The accounting nightmare alone of trying to reconcile and approve / disapprove charges of that nature would send finance, HR and other departments screaming into the night. My employer will let you buy drinks provided it is a justifiable business thing, such as part of a sanctioned event, and transportation provided it is company-related business. I have to think Michigan has similar policies.

What a dumb ass. Right before the portal opens back up too. Terrible terrible timing. Not a fan of his early, but you can't fire him right now. Give him the juwan you better not slap again deal.

I'm in Florida right now where the traffic is crazy, and every time I stop at a light I see someone texting. Most of them continue to text as they drive. I'm sure there are more of them than drunk drivers and they're BOTH very dangerous. I drove drunk a few times as a teenager, but I've never texted while driving. Texters scare me when I'm on my motorcycle, too. People are just dumb.

An uber is only a few phone clicks away, there is zero excuse to be drunk driving in this day and age. So if he is fired I have zero sympathy for a grown ass man making that decision.

I would disagree with 'ineffective and an overreach'.

When alcohol monitoring is ordered by the court (and it often is by local judges, even for first offenses), it can be daily, or several times per week at random, and you get a choice of having a device in-home that reports data automatically, or you go to the probation department at the courthouse each morning between 5-9am to blow.  The first option is more convenient, but is somewhat expensive, though for a guy making mid-6figures, the fee is probably a non-factor.

That’s not any more effective though. He was charged with drunk driving, taking a test in a courthouse the next day or an at home test isn’t going to prove he was drinking and driving.

Unless your implication is that he’s completely barred from drinking, it is ineffective and an overreach. Barring him from drinking entirely, would also be a massive overreach.

The comment i was responding to was your comment in response to the suggestion that he be tested every day to keep his job.  You responded that that would be ineffective and overreaching.

I'm pointing out that the courts disagree with you.  It's highly likely that the judge will put him on alcohol monitoring (i.e. testing) at his first court appearance, and it's likely he'll remain on it to some degree until he completes his probation.  if he blows dirty, the judge could throw him in jail.

I don't know what part you think is ineffective or overreaching, but the courts find it both effective and reasonable.  If a person disagrees, they're welcome to sit in jail if they'd rather not adhere to conditions offered by the judge in lieu of incarceration.

Daily alcohol monitoring is pretty effective, and compared to jail, is hardly an overreach, imo.  Are there ways for people to get around it if they're hell-bent on drinking?  yes, kind of...anybody capable of doing basic math can figure out exactly how many drinks they can have, and what time they need to stop, in order to be able to blow zeroes by 8:59am the following morning.  But it's also true that the judge and/or probation officer can order an ETG at any time for any reason, which can detect alcohol metabolites from any alcohol consumed in the previous 96hours.

so for the large majority of people, alcohol monitoring is neither ineffective, nor an overreach.

So now I have to question why we hadn't heard a peep about his two prior DUI's before this. But yeah 3 now, this guy needs to be fired, zero question about it.

Moore just can't catch any breaks.  The defense is suppose to be the weight carriers for this team next year, but the defensive staff makeover and now this are making it difficult to unite any the staff and players together.  Hopefully, just like last year, the players will work together and eliminate all of the off-field messes.

Third DUI, he's done. Guy needs some help but is clearly a danger to himself and every person on the road. Should not be coaching football anywhere, let alone at Michigan.

The dude has a new job in a new town and he's driving around drunk. The second time he's been busted for this. I maybe too harsh but I say fire him now. The LAST thing this team needs is more off field drama . I hope Sherone had an option B for that position. Make a statement that this kind of thing will not be tolerated.

My thing is, wtf is he doing driving in A2 at 3 am? It's bad enough you closed the bar down your first month in town, but then what? I hear the Vu is back open! Jesus. The city damn near shuts down around 11 for grownups. You have to be dedicated to keep the party going, let alone til 3 in the morning!

The OWI in itself is no bueno #1.

The challenge for me are the areas where Scruggs demonstrates a clear lack of judgement for anyone in a leadership/mentor capacity.

A) not bothering to get an Uber

B) what is he doing out at 3AM during his first week on the job

Unfortunately, based off of those factors alone my sense is that he should be let go.

He’s not gonna be able to hold those players accountable in the manner he needs to.

Sucks, because it looked like a great hire.
