Rose Bowl Broadcast observations

Submitted by goblu330 on January 2nd, 2024 at 11:24 AM

I was interested yesterday to see and hear how the game was presented on ESPN after the turbulence during the season and what I find to be a pretty consistent anti-Michigan slant on the "family of networks" going back some years.  To my surprise, I thought the game was called very balanced yesterday and actually enjoyed the Fowler/Herbstreit duo for the first time in a while.  It also felt like a very Michigan-centric broadcast with the Michigan Marching Band featured multiple times.

The only thing I don't like (and why Klatt is the best IMO) is the unwillingness of this crew to call out bad officiating.  There is no way you cannot comment on the lack of flag on the JJ late hit.  You have to call that out.

All in all though, credit where credit is due.  I thought the broadcast was good, almost no missed plays, insightful commentary, and most of the takes fair and balanced.

What did you all think?

That was Keegan. I was screaming at the TV. Keegan was on the ground face up and this asshole literally dove with both hands into Keegan’s face. The side judge was looking right at it. It should have been an ejection. Keegan wasn’t even blocking that guy.

Watched the game live yesterday using the Michigan Radio ESPN stream.

Re-watching this morning with the regular broadcast stream and noticed the background noise (micced by ESPN) was much stronger for the Bama fans/band than it was for Michigan, despite the larger Michigan contingent.

Edit: to clarify, I don't at all believe the Bama crowd/band was louder than ours... but ESPN made it sound that way.

This is our "Do you believe in miracles" call.  Fowler's call on the last play . . . . Game on the line . . Williams in motion . . .  low snap . . . .Milroe stopped at the line . . .  Michigan makes a stand and comes up with a milestone play off victory.

I agree, I thought they called a good game.  The game was really entertaining and Fowler and Herbstreit were clearly enjoying the atmosphere and making the most of it.

Also, pretty sure they did comment on the late hit they just didn't make a big deal about it once it was clear there was going to be no flag.

From a broadcast perspective, I thought it was interesting and added to the quality of the broadcast that they let their 'rules analyst' cut in on the announce team to point out that the interception was going to be over-turned because the player was out of bounds.

I thought it was fine. The commercials were once again brutal. There is a guy on reddit that lists every commercial and the times and it was over an hour in total stops. Just seeing the huge list of commercials is just awful. I was exhausted after watching the UM game already, but I had absolutely no interest in sitting through another commercial barrage for the second game.

I've come to appreciate that whoever makes the Dr. Pepper ads does have a deep understanding of college football fandom. The one where everyone destroys their homes and apparel after a poor first play hits close to home (and certainly replicates my household's response to the first play yesterday).

I spend a lot of time watching old nfl games on youtube with calls from guys like Madden and Bob Trumpy doing color.

My big issue with Herbstreet is he's constantly observing what the momentum is doing. It's pointless blather. Guys like Madden never wasted a moment insulting the audience with feelings ball stuff like that.

Observations like that are either a guess or fully obvious.

Herbstreet knows the game. And I also think he's spread too thin and is probably too tired to dial in like he could.

I just think they do a poor job with the details of the play, especially when compared with Klatt, who would have for sure discussed how Stewart caved in the right tackle. He also would have noted Colson following the back in motion, taking that read away from Milroe (if it even was an option).

I can’t even tell you what Herbie said about that play, but how he missed the Stewart push is beyond me.

If that swing pass was an option, I think Colson was screwed. He was maybe a half step late following the back out. It looks there's a moment of confusion between him and Barrett as to which had responsibility for the back. And there was a lot of traffic to navigate, a lot of space, and a WR blocker for the two d backs to the wide side of the formation.

It was a fine broadcast, and basically what you'd expect in a big game like this.  I thought some of the talking heads around the broadcast weren't great - the less Joey Galloway on my screen waiting for the hamster in his head to start running on the treadmill the better - but this was a playoff game between two big-name programs and it was treated like that in terms of coverage.

I thought it was fine, and I generally enjoy Herbstreit. He's not a mega homer like Joey Galloway, who has no business being on TV. He can barely put a sentence together.

I think they did call out the late hit, especially on the replay. I remember Herbstreit saying that JJ was actually in the white.

There was also an identical personal foul penalty that Michigan got called for where one of the lineman was knocked down and then the Alabama defender dove on top of him. Nobody even mentioned it.

That happened several times.   Bama lineman were loading up the pile on a lot of tackles and could have drawn a flag.  I also counted three offensive hands to the face calls on Bama that were not called, including on their last TD and the last play that was stopped.

Yeah, on the last Bama TD the EMLOS was getting blocked entirely by grabbing our guy by the helmet.  Either you are calling it a tight game or you are not.  I don't care which one you choose, but be consistent.  After the PF against Bredeson, you can't let other PF-worthy calls (of which there were at least 4-5) slide.

Also, there seemed to be some close/questionable plays where they would just spend 20 seconds focused on a Bama player catching his breath rather than showing a replay.  The lack of replays was odd to me.

I have been enjoying syncing the Michigan radio call to the tv broadcast and listening/watching that way.

I don't have nearly as much dead commercial time, radio stays and talks lot while TV is gone doing commercials.

Also, I didn't have to endure Herbstreit's dog story...like, come on!  Why are we talking about his dog during the Rose Bowl?

Best positive is you get to hear the Michigan perspective on everything, not a 'neutral' broadcast.

Just my 2 cents

- I thought the broadcast announcers were fine...

- ...but the direction was so-so. There weren't any missed plays, but there were too many missed replays (e.g., you could hear the crowd erupt in the 2nd half. Why? According to Twitter, it was b/c Clemons got pulled by his face mask to the ground. The broadcast should have been on that)

- The amount of commercials was Fox-esque (i.e., terrible)

- And a special shout-out to YouTubeTV: a good portion of my second half was at 480p, for whatever reason, and YouTube support was just telling people, "Hmmm...we're not sure why people are experiencing that. Turn it on, turn it off."

I don't like Herbstreit. He presents opinion as fact too much. "If they hadn't done XYZ, this would have happened." I'd rather have the color commentator talk about plays that actually happened or present quick backstories on players, etc.

And yes, the lack of a flag on that late hit on McCarthy was egregious and not discussed at all. And Alabama had ZERO holding calls all game against a team with six sacks? Right. It's almost like they we ordered to not discuss officiating (unless a Michigan player brushed the leg of a punter who reacted like he'd been hit by a truck).

I am still watching the game (just scored our second TD), but the coverage has been fine. The lead up however, was obnoxious. The ticker at the bottom was so slanted toward Alabama, it was disgusting. ALA: Averaging 42 ppg over the past 5 games. UM: Lost last 6 Bowl games. ALA: Seeking 7th NC in CFP era. UM: 0-2 in CFP. No mention of UM leading the nation in scoring margin or ranked number 1 by nearly every metric (except their idiotic FPI).

What hurt the most about the pre-game crawl of pro-bama stats was that they were all true. They have won 6 NC in the past ~15 years; and as they pointed out multiple times yesterday, Michigan has one "shared" NC in 75 years.

As for Michigan's scoring differential, Iowa got 0 pts vs mediocre Tennessee, while osu got 3 (QB issues notwithstanding) vs their sec opponent. It's clear why they don't respect our stats.

And THAT is another reason this win was so sweet! Suck it ESPN!
