Rose Bowl Broadcast observations
I was interested yesterday to see and hear how the game was presented on ESPN after the turbulence during the season and what I find to be a pretty consistent anti-Michigan slant on the "family of networks" going back some years. To my surprise, I thought the game was called very balanced yesterday and actually enjoyed the Fowler/Herbstreit duo for the first time in a while. It also felt like a very Michigan-centric broadcast with the Michigan Marching Band featured multiple times.
The only thing I don't like (and why Klatt is the best IMO) is the unwillingness of this crew to call out bad officiating. There is no way you cannot comment on the lack of flag on the JJ late hit. You have to call that out.
All in all though, credit where credit is due. I thought the broadcast was good, almost no missed plays, insightful commentary, and most of the takes fair and balanced.
What did you all think?

There is one moment I wish I could see a clip of but I doubt it caught much attention.
Not during the game itself, but while still in the pregame when the Michigan band was on the field, Rece Davis was trying to talk as the band was playing The Victors, and you could hear the M fans belting out "HAIL!" loudly even as the broadcast was going on and you could tell this almost made Davis emotional, like he had to stop speaking and just said something like "listen to this."
Thought that was a cool moment.

Agree. I don't agree with all of their stuff, but they love the game, and that was a great moment.

That and the... "did he trip sainristil"? i duno, but it was effective. wut?! If its a trip, call it out

I tried the Michigan radio feed for a few minutes until their time lag became noticable and annoying; it was at least two seconds and was probably going to get longer over time. What's the point of listening to a PBP in parallel to watching it when it's not synced up?
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:06 PM ^
Their biggest miss was carrying on about how Jalen Milroe slid down rather than try to go for a first down on one of his scrambles. To me it looked pretty clear that he was trying to make a move and slipped. They talked about it a lot and never considered he did anything other than wuss out.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:11 PM ^
Honestly I thought he slid AND that it was the right move. He had four yards to cover and two Michigan defenders screaming downhill at him.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:36 PM ^
He took a lot of hits. His jersey has covered in grass stains and dirt halfway into the game. He was also wincing a good deal on camera after contact.
Dude is probably feeling it today.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:43 PM ^
Yeah, hell of a game by Milroe. Guy is their best player on offense and it isn't close.
January 2nd, 2024 at 2:21 PM ^
I hope everyone in the crimson tide (and buckeye) nations is feeling it today!
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:11 PM ^
It started odd because the beginning of the coverage was all about Alabama, as UM wasn't warming up on the field yet, but once UM showed up it turned very, very even, at kind of a shocking degree. Except for the weird and on-brand GameDay "let's ask Jim about sign stealing" feature.

I MUCH prefer Fowler/Herbie to Gus/Klatt. Gus and Klatt are black licorice to me. I thought the broadcast was good yesterday, but I thought that Fowler and Herbstreit seemed to get a little revved up and "here comes Bama!" every time Bama made a first down in the second half. Like, we all knew they were gonna stop messing around and dominate at some point, AND HERE IT COMES! Felt that multiple times.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:24 PM ^
Gus and Joel are very similar to something Jerry Garcia said about Grateful Dead fans: Not everyone likes licorice. But the people who do really like licorice. It's not my thing, and a lot of what Gus says and does on the broadcast either doesn't land for me or feels really over-the-top, but I appreciate that it's something different that appeals to others. It's a nice change of pace now and then.
Herbie and Fowler feels like I'm watching sports in a time machine with people who really, really wish they were Keith Jackson. But they're not.

The only real irritation I had with the broadcast was that I had two screens showing the game, one in each of two neighboring rooms. One uses a roku, the other a firestick, and I had to mess with pausing the roku from time to time because the Amazon/yttv feed was a tad behind the roku/yttv feed. All that to say, the booth was not annoying, so, okay.

Other than that how's the cord cutting working out?
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:23 PM ^
Only thing I was not a fan of was the extremely obvious favoring of putting the sound system right next to Alabama’s band. Michigan’s band was more or less muted the entire afternoon or you could only hear them after Alabama’s band finished playing.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:29 PM ^
The thing is that the Bama band (like a lot of SEC bands) plays all the time, between every play, both sides of the ball, and a lot of it is noise filler. The MMB doesn't do that (and never really has). The MMB plays in the stands, but a lot of the during-play stuff on offense are drum cadences or nothing (by request/design, to minimize noise). The defensive stands tunes have evolved to fill a lot more space with noise, which is good.
Watching the broadcast yesterday, I really liked that both bands were mic'ed very, very well (which is an art that most networks/venues don't do well, often you don't get enough sound or decent balance). But when one of the bands basically never stops playing, yeah, you're going to hear them more.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:42 PM ^
Interesting. SEC bands also seem to travel more. Does that mean that during SEC games, there will be two bands playing simultaneously for much of the game (or is there some power sharing arrangement?)
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:47 PM ^
Never paid attention to that part, the dueling bands, but I really enjoy the Southern teams whose band basically performs a 3 hour concert every Saturday. They do a great job trying to keep the emotions going.

Interesting, as usual. Always appreciate Bando's band insights.

I…kind of wanted to murder Alabama’s band. They don’t take a single play off. Even every time Bama was sacked, had a penalty or were forced to punt, they still blasted a stand tune. And I just wanted the MMB to blast them right back with Temptation or something. I think the only time they didn’t play the entire game was when Michigan recovered the fumble.

Unlike many on here, I think Herbie does a good job and is objective most of the time. He is actually one of the few ESPN commentators that defends or praises Michigan, even when (gasp!!!) the criticism is warranted. It seems almost like a sentimental thing with him because of his Buckeye roots. By contrast, Desmond is a straight up Michigan homer and though I love his loyalty and what he has to say, when I remove my maize and blue colored glasses I don’t take his analysis seriously. Just about everyone else on ESPN, most especially Joey Galloway, is either a Michigan-hater or an SEC shill because of the obvious commercial interests.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:34 PM ^
Never having been a fan of either of them, I did something I've never done before...
I muted the audio in the 1st quarter and watched the entire game in silence (unmuted a couple of times to hear the refs).
It was terrific ... lowered my anxiety level by 50% for some reason.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:36 PM ^
I liked the coverage. They played it straight-up, a massive game between two titans of the sport in the sport's greatest setting. They treated it like the showcase that it was, kept the focus on the game and the players and the coaches and not on old news from two months ago, and it was a pleasure to watch (except for the parts where I felt like I was going to die).

No complaints about the Rose bowl broadcast but something I really enjoyed after 3 years of heartbreak was having the Sugar bowl broadcast on my tv AFTER the Michigan game ended and me not being sick about it. Keeping it on without a worry in the world while enjoying the Michigan win was such a great feeling.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:38 PM ^
I just need to complain about the microphone placement for the game. They must have put the on-field mics right by the Alabama band because you could always hear them after every play but rarely did you hear the MMB. You could only hear the MMB if they were the only one playing, and sometimes Alabama would start up and drown out the MMB. Just one more SEC-centric thing from ESPN.

Scroll up and read Bando's comments.

Not much SEC speed talk...which was nice.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:41 PM ^
feels like a veiled way for you to complain about that one missed call. those are my thoughts.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:52 PM ^
I didn’t care how Herbie kept saying Bama shouldn’t give themselves self inflicted wounds when it was Michigan who had many more self inflicted wounds. It kind of drives the narrative that Bama losing was only because of themselves and not what Michigan did. But otherwise, yes. I didn’t have many major issues with the broadcast.

I don't think there was a foul for a late hit on JJ. 1) Thought the timing and landing were okay, that's just the physical part of the game. 2) I'm not sure about this, but I believe due to it being a throw back to JJ, his protection as a passer is given up.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:57 PM ^
Giving up one's "protection as a passer" has nothing to do with being tackled so far out of bounds that you're outside of the white, closer to Bama's bench than the playing field.
January 3rd, 2024 at 11:05 AM ^
I should have said I don't think there was a penalty for roughing the passer. I am referring to the throw back play.
I do think a flag probably should have been thrown on the JJ run where he was hauled down out of bounds.
January 2nd, 2024 at 1:03 PM ^
Different play. The one on the throw back to JJ was not a penalty and would not have been even if he still had "QB Protection" IMO. Late in the fourth after the final drive, he was thrown to the ground pretty viciously four yards out of bounds. It was definitely a penalty.
January 2nd, 2024 at 12:54 PM ^
IMO, not balanced at all. But then again it was difficult to understand Fowler while he was gargling Saban's balls.
January 2nd, 2024 at 1:49 PM ^
I was surprised at how positive Herbie was about Michigan. First time I've really heard him have good things to say about our team and players. He's typically a slappy, and has a deep disdain for M.
Fowler was his annoying SEC-fanboy self.
January 2nd, 2024 at 2:23 PM ^
Herbstreit is awful. He's so full of himself. If you listen to his "analysis," he likes to tell us things from his pre-game notes (most likely researched by someone else), and he doesn't know when to stop talking. There were a number of times when he was reciting his memorized notes about a player, then another player would enter the screen and he'd recite his memorized notes about that player then get back to the first player. He has a hard time integrating players with in-game play analysis.
He also doesn't quite understand the flow of the game and when to let the game breathe.
January 2nd, 2024 at 2:43 PM ^
Was so nice not to hear Gus Johnson saying “KAPOW!” and his dumb-ass made-up nicknames a thousand times.
Herbie lacks Klatt’s insight (as most do), but on the balance I’ll take it.

Ok. I did a cursory check and this seems to be an appropriate spot. Apologies if elsewhere. Has anyone watched Kenneth Grant's jubilation after the Milroe stuff to end the game? I want to frame it. It should be a feature on Brian's summation post moving forward. the double bird(s) and KG Jubilation dance o' the game.
Link to just before the play (which you really should be watching again right now): https://youtu.be/lO38tZoA0l8?t=1217
My crappy image work with added Mason and Rod running.
