Purdue goes down to FDU: second 1 to lose to 16

It was a happy moment. I remember when that was OK. Sad we have lost that innocence.

He's got a Tom Waits--ish quality that sends his touchablity off the charts. Who among us could resist?

A coach that can beat Purdue........ hmmm
March 17th, 2023 at 10:09 PM ^
BIG sucks in BB. It does not have the athletic players that today’s game requires.
March 17th, 2023 at 10:30 PM ^
I'm afraid that now the south has upper hand. Bama, Baylor, Houston, Auburn, Texas, etc.
March 18th, 2023 at 12:00 AM ^
Correct. BIG BB is where it’s football was a few years ago. Too slow to adapt to the modern game. It needs an infusion of coaching talent first and then recruiting new type of players.
March 17th, 2023 at 10:14 PM ^
I have already seen the FDU coach's post-game speech like 50 times already. Enough.
You know Painter was scared as hell this would happen.
March 17th, 2023 at 11:27 PM ^
This is how you hit a Whiteboard Izzo, you little troll weakling.
March 17th, 2023 at 11:45 PM ^
Is it only me or is that the shape of New Jersey?!
March 18th, 2023 at 12:01 AM ^
Looks like the one thing Purdue actually hit.
March 17th, 2023 at 10:17 PM ^
Guards generally rule in tournament play and Purdue’s guards are not good. If you take Edey off that team, they’re probably playing in the NIT.
And then not getting Edey more shots is more evidence that Painter is a vastly overrated in-game coach.
March 17th, 2023 at 10:48 PM ^
Freshman in charge of the ball.
Name the top 5 in-game coaches and why.
March 17th, 2023 at 10:26 PM ^
Sucks for Purdue but damn that was fun to watch and what makes this time of year so great!
March 18th, 2023 at 12:34 AM ^
and why college sports are better than pros
I don't necessarily disagree but plenty of games in these tournament's (year in and year out) are stinkers because of college bball rules or certain teams having "off nights" against lesser competition; amongst other variables. Does that truly make for a better product?
March 17th, 2023 at 10:34 PM ^
A week ago, I said Purdue was the perfect #1 seed to get picked off by a #16....I really scratch my head on how people struggle with the following statement...the B10 has been down lately and the 22/23 season in particular was one of the more down years that I can recall. If you ask me honestly, this year's Michigan squad had more individual talent than just about everyone else in the league but we managed 17 wins because we failed to take care of the little things. The only B10 squad I have going to the Sweet 16 is Indiana because they have two players who can individually make shots in Hood-Schifino and Jackson-Davis. This was the main issue with the league - not enough individual shot-makers.
The fact that Beilein took us to two NC games is an accomplishment that we should never have allowed to walk.
March 17th, 2023 at 11:14 PM ^
I don't think anyone "allowed" anyone to walk
March 17th, 2023 at 11:29 PM ^
Sadly I do - when you have something good going, you do all you can to keep it clicking because you know the ROI is well worth it.
March 17th, 2023 at 11:36 PM ^
I think JB was going and there was nothing in Michigan's control to change that.
March 17th, 2023 at 11:40 PM ^
We'll never know the whole story my man...here's to hoping we get the magic going again.
March 18th, 2023 at 12:47 PM ^
JB has said as much: he was torn between just retiring and trying to coach in the pros for a bit. Staying at Michigan was not an option he was looking at.
March 17th, 2023 at 10:43 PM ^
Living here in Indiana, I have a lot of Purdue friends. They are devastated beyond words. If you put yourself in that position, under Beilein, how would that feel? Because Painter is regarded like Coach B. So they cannot explain the game plan, like us. I have no ill will for them. If MSU were in that position, I would be happy, But here, even IU fans are taking pity for them. Probably since they beat them twice this year. Bad for the Big 10. In all ways. Take no joy in this.
March 17th, 2023 at 11:15 PM ^
IU fans treat Purdue like "little brother" as we know the term well. They love the schadenfreude and vice versa, just visit their blogs. I would take the pity at face value.
Thoughts and prayers for your Purdon't friends, but this in fact did not happen to Beilein's teams because Beilein is a far better coach than Painter. Beilein took his teams to Elite 8s, Finals 4s, and championships on the regular. Painter has an alarming penchant for losing in the 1st round and has gotten as far as the Elite 8 a grand total of once. Tell your Boiler peeps they're embarrassing themselves by comparing Beilein to him.
Whether this happened to Beilien. 2012, lost as a three seed to Ohio. That coach went to Illinois and flamed out. I don’t consider the loss to be a huge failure. Incredible job to get the Stu Douglass squad to be a three seed at all.
JB won the B1G with that crew. An amazing accomplishment. After that crew is exactly when JB recruited better athletes and boom F4

Big Ten is weak.
March 17th, 2023 at 10:51 PM ^
We'll see tomorrow and Sunday. Not so fast my friend.
5/8 teams advanced. Maybe 3, 4, 5 make the Sweet16. Maybe not. Maybe 1, 2, 3 in the Elite8. Maybe not. Hell maybe "we" get a Final4 team in.
But what are you typing about right now. Come back next weekend and make your claim. College basketball as a whole is a shitshow.
March 17th, 2023 at 11:18 PM ^
I don't want this to be a referendum on Juwan, and this isn't worth a thread by any means.
But, if Juwan resigned, went to a pro team--for whatever reason was gone tomorrow and Painter were available would you want him?
I think the answer is still yes.
March 18th, 2023 at 12:59 AM ^
In short, no, I wouldn't want Painter. He's a plainly bad in-game coach.
The answer is yes.
Who truly thinks he's a bad in-game coach? Based off what? Some NCAA tournament games his teams lost? Ok, playing the game, we pass on Painter and I'd love to read the great in-game coaches we'd rather have.
HELL NO
March 17th, 2023 at 11:18 PM ^
Trash conference. Let us in there so we can show them how it's done (yet again).
Would like to see Purdue get slotted as a 3-seed in 2024.
....and then proceed to lose to a 14 seed, and the following year lose as a 7 seed in the 1st round to make the double-digit loser's flush complete.
March 18th, 2023 at 12:09 AM ^
Looking at it now, it reminds me of Michigan vs OSU in 2018. The week before Indiana exposed crossing routes would kill Michigan, so OSU ran crossing routes with no resistance. Last week Penn State exposed pressing Purdue’s guards throws off their entire offense. It also did not help that none of the guards on Purdue could stay in front of their man. Purdue is an average team with a freak at center. FDU exploited him by having a big guy #11 who was a threat to shoot which forced him to defend all the way to the three point line opening up driving lanes, back cuts and getting open three point looks.
March 18th, 2023 at 12:37 AM ^
People say the SEC means more? Nobody in the big ten is sad to see Purdue lose! Sec fans say well so and so won we’re good, we say fuck em! Big ten sucks and screws us, big ten is the most heated and meaningful conference
Stop drinking and go to bed.
No! Keep drinking and keep typing! We love insane screeds here!

So does the NCAA decide to start handing out two 17 seeds next year so Purdue can improve?
Be bold and trust your own judgement. Upvoted you for encouragement.
Purdue, Purdon't, Purdidn't. It should be not that big of a bracket buster. I had them making it through the round of 32 and then losing, as in not reaching the sweet 16.
That team was mediocre the last 10 regular season games. They played even worse than Michigan, at times by losing games in the final few minutes with numerous turnovers. Yes, it was very frustrating for us Michigan fans seeing our team not able to close out games, but Purdue fans have to be screaming in the streets about how their team has played.
Even though they were a 15 seed, this brings back fond memories of Middle Tennessee State. I can still remember MSU-fan coworkers swearing and storming out of the office that Friday afternoon in 2016. “Oh, what happened? Are you leaving for the day? Have a nice weekend!” Fond memories, indeed.

A lot of people on this thread talking about how bad the B1G is... true, Purdue losing to a 16 seed is a big stain for the B1G, but the B1G has actually performed decently well so far in the tourney: 5-3 record, including Penn St destroying 7 seed Texas A&M. They're doing better than I thought they would overall.

11 shots for edey is coaching malpractice
