Purdue goes down to FDU: second 1 to lose to 16

Still worth it. I’d take that in a heartbeat. Medium and long tourney runs are cool. Hanging a banner though is REALLY cool.
This is by far the worse loss in college basketball postseason history. FDU was in the 300s on Kenpom for basically the whole year, played in the worst conference in basketball, didn’t win their conference regular or tournament title, had to go through the 16-seed play-in game, went 4-22 last year, are coached by a first year coach who came up from D2, and is the smallest team in basketball. This is way worse than what UVA did 5 years ago. Historic choke.
Virginia also lost by 20. At least Purdue kept this one close. Silver linings
Virginia also lost their best player to a broken wrist right before the tournament started and UMBC was actually a good team (mid-100s on Kenpom). Purdue’s loss is way way worse.
Purdue's loss is worse, but Virginia not getting out of the first round 4 out of the last 5 tournaments is awful

Oh yeah their tournament performance, aside from a fluke-ish 2019 championship, is terrible as well. And equally hilarious.

I had to look and see how they got in the dance without winning the regular season or the conference tourney.
I know that rule that prevented Merrimack from participating is pretty common across divisions and conferences, but what is the purpose of it?
Similar to the rule about new FBS teams being bowl ineligible - I believe the point is to ensure that teams don't jump divisions on short notice when they are in the middle of short runs of good-to-great years only to jump down again when they regress back to normal. They need to demonstrate long term commitment (financial and otherwise) to maintaining their programs at the D1 level.
I thought that might be the rationale. It would make more sense to me if they just made schools wait longer when they signal their desire to jump to the next level.
How Dickinson? Fairly Dickinson!
Severely Dickinson
Hunter Dickinson?

Will I Am!
With so many savvy folks on the blog, I rarely feel I've got much to offer.
BUT . . .
More than once, I commented that though I like Purdue and Painter, I didn't see their team as more than Eddy and the Edette's.
Fair enough, but that just means Purdue probably wasn’t a Final Four team, not losing in the first round team.
Good point.
You can't go deep in a tournament with freshmen guards.
Really good point.

Not alone get into it.
Anybody else have flashbacks to 1985 when they almost beat us when we were a No. 1 seed?
that was a classic frieder game…watched it in the TV lounge at couzens hall and we were absolutely miserable.
I was 11 and that was my first taste of UM in the NCAA tournament. I realized that not having a shot clock is a terrible thing when you are the better team on paper.
Operative word in this instance being “almost”. Then went on and lost to the eventual National Champion, Villanova, in the next game.

Remember vividly, and if I remember correct 4 of their 5 starters fouled out.
Before the game the announcers coined the phrase "Fairly Ridiculous" that they had any chance of upsetting Michigan. Little did they know what was to transpire.
It took two non starters, Leslie Rockymore and Robert Henderson to score 20 points off the bench in a 59-55 win just to survive. Matt Painter is to Purdue what Bill Frieder was to UM. Recruit really well. Win enough games in B1G to win the conference title. Then play under stress in NCAA and make it out of the opening weekend rarely (Bill did it one time).
Purdue didn’t even look like the P5 team. Edy is the hole extent of their talent and they’re really marginal on the perimeter. Small, very little length, just ok shooting.
UM didn’t shoot as well as Purdue and could’ve won their matchup - that should scream not a #1 seed.
The big ten is straight garbage in bball this year smh
Outside of Michigan, it’s been trash for awhile now
It’s even started to tarnish Michigan
Purdue has made history. No stopping this train.
Another Friday night train derailment in Ohio.
Too soon.

Now this is funny, and I live in Ohio.
Fire Painter
UMBC ran UVa off the court in 2018 but this game was arguably a worse loss because FDU wasn't a good team and didn't even play that well. Purdue just played horribly and at this point I don't know if Painter can recover as a head coach from this. I guess if he wins a title in a year so be it but that feels unlikely.
He just won the B1G....but he needs to figure out how to put the kind of team on the floor that can rise to the occasion in the tournament. A great article in the NYT today about how Purdue plays old-style basketball gave insight into why he recruits how he does....that leads to consistency and conference titles because they stay steady but they seem prone to losing when it's all on the line in the tournament because they can't match on pure talent.
The tournament is all about perimeter play, and Purdue deliberately chooses the opposite. Every year.

IDK, they didn't choose to miss a zillion open 3s
More like Purdon’t
Coach Howard is still coaching this season, coach Painter is not
And honestly, where would you rather be sitting tonight? Losing as a 1 seed in the first round of the NCAA or advancing in the NIT? I wouldn’t trade spots with Purdue just to say my team made the Dance for anything right now.

Purdue did hang two banners this season. This is as embarrassing a loss as it gets. But they did hang two banners this year. Not that I actually wanna trade spots with them right now, as I would be deviated as a fan. But Purdue had a better season than Michigan.
Love it!
FDU clearly wanted to win more. They just flat out played faster and more aggressive.
Purdidn't.
I didn’t pick them to go far in my bracket (compared to other 1 seeds), because…Purdue. What I failed to calculate was just how Purdue this Purdue team was. You can never really underestimate Purdue.
JEBUS, so pathetic, sucks to be them.
So basically Purdue will get all kinds of lucky breaks and gifted calls by the refs next year in the tourney to win Painter a title?
Unless Edey comes back, they'll be lucky to make the tournament. This was an NIT without him this year.
