Purdue goes down to FDU: second 1 to lose to 16
I'd still take their season over what Michigan did this year. Making the tournament and losing hilariously is better than sucking all year long.
You’d rather lose to a 16 seed and be one of 2 out of 152 to do so? No thanks, I’d rather be young and not make the tournament.
I wholeheartedly agree with this. I am embarrassed to be associated with that loss. Loosely associated, but associated nonetheless. FDU had 4 wins last year.
No. Just no.
You’re a buffoon. Only 2 teams in the history of the NCAAs have lost to 16 seeds. Michigan has enough sporting misery to go around AND DOES NOT need a 1/16 upset on the resume.

An NiT season is 1000 times better than that hot mess. And now it’s become a thing for Purdue.
What the fuck are you talking about? To use the parlance of our times.
Being a 16th seed > winning the NIT. Objectively.
How would there be more shame in losing to a team that’s ostensibly better than any team M will face in the NIT? If M gets bounced at any point in the NIT, the prevailing assumption would be that they lost to a worse team than Purdue did. Shameful.
Even if M wins the NIT, it only gives an argument -and not a perfectly convincing one, though it’s fairly convincing- that they could have belonged as a 16 seed or so in the real tournament.
Just because we’re bereaved doesn’t make us saps!

He always has been.
Let’s see…have a disappointing season that no one remembers or have a good season but the worst NCAA tournament loss of all time that everyone remembers? Yeah that’s tough.
This is Purdue's App St horror moment, as if last season wasn't The Exorcist on steroids. They one upped it in this tournament.

Time will tell, but I think UVA losing to UMBC was worse. Obviously that's a matter of degree, both are hilariously awful.
March 17th, 2023 at 10:31 PM ^
Counterpoint: Purdue was giving more points than UVA did, and statistically it was the tallest team vs the smallest team in the country, a literal David vs Goliath. That to me is a story in its self. Plus the fact that FDU only got into the tournament as a technicality and didn't deserve to be in to begin with.
But agreed both were hilarious!
March 17th, 2023 at 11:28 PM ^
Purdue also lost to a 15 and a 16 in consecutive years while having a goddamn Ent at center. Seriously, how hard is it to just throw it to the tall guy?
No way — not even close. That UMBC team was relatively good — they were #188 in KenPom before the UVa game, and were the second #16 seed (out of 6). Prior to the expansion to 65 teams, they would have been a 15 seed.
FDU didn’t win their conference. They didn’t win their conference tournament. They snuck in because the team that won both was Merrimack, and they’re still transitioning from D-II to D-I, so FDU got the automatic bid as the conference title game loser. They were #298 on KenPom going into the game — in CMU territory. Heck, they won 4 games last year!
The only bigger upset in NCAA history is Chaminade over UVa.
Let me guess: You thought the Toledo football loss in '08 was worse than the Appy State loss the year before, right? And, you believe everyone else in America feels the same way. (Hint: Very few college football fans remember the '08 loss. The '07 one is famous.)
You’re wrong. Missing the tournament certainly is disappointing, but Purdue shows that there are fates worse than having to settle for the NIT.
God you're a turd
posting year-round and sucking all the time is way worse. you should stop doing that.
Of course,"YOU" would. What an epiphany of your own.
An off-season (and beyond) of being a miserable laughing stock doesn't get erased by hoisting a banner in November.
Unfortunately for Purdue, the only thing people will remember about this season is this embarrassing loss.
March 18th, 2023 at 10:23 AM ^
Michigan's season will soon be forgotten. What happened to Purdue will be remembered for decades.
Purdue now has their Appalachian St. legacy.
This is not an early season non-conference game - a much bigger stage. I have legit empathy Purdue fans. That was bad.
Worse, maybe? Not a Purdue basketball fan, so I'm not sure.
This is 100x worse than Michigan losing to App State. App State was actually a decent team that we didn’t take seriously. Purdue has no business losing to FDU.
March 17th, 2023 at 10:00 PM ^
That "decent" team lost to Wofford and Georgia Southern in 2007.
March 17th, 2023 at 10:53 PM ^
On their way to their third straight FCS national championship.
(Losing to Minnesota that year would have had far less stigma but would have been a worse loss.)
Yeah, I noted this in the game thread but App St. was a good football team when they beat Michigan. FDU wouldn't have even gotten into the tournament but the NCAA had a dumb rule saying you can't go to the postseason if you're transitioning to D1 so Merrimack (who won the league) got bypassed. It's unbelievable that this happened.
Not only that, they only won 4 games last year.
TIL
Maybe a revenue rule (less share in first season)?

That App State team, if they could’ve been ranked as a Division 1A team at the time, probably would’ve been somewhere in the 35-45 range. Still no excuse to lose to them at home when we’re ranked 5th, but it’s not as bad as the epic upset that the haters love to paint it.
Worse, at least Appy St were national champs the year before.
FDU won 4 games last year. 1st year coach too.
I can’t tell you how bad it is for Purdue, all I know is that I’m hesitant to compare anything to App state.
March 17th, 2023 at 10:04 PM ^
I'm not going to get into that comparison, either, but I'm amazed that people still try to put perfume on that (2007) pig.
For those with shaky recall, Appy State was the *FCS* national champion the year before. They had no business beating Michigan in Ann Arbor. That game is famous for a reason.
March 18th, 2023 at 12:13 AM ^
We shouldn't have lost, but a typical FCS champion is probably about a 6-6 caliber team, if it were in the FBS. It made history because an FCS team hadn't beaten a ranked FBS team to that point, but it's since happened a number of times.
That game was also a season opener, whereas Purdue tonight had an entire season to prepare for this tournament.

I’m amazed that people still try to put perfume on that pig
Says the guy who constantly tries to defend RichRod.
How am I defending RichRod here? I'm just comparing losses.
The loss a year later to Toledo was much, much worse. Not that Appalachian State was a high point by any means. But at least that Appalachian State team had some serious skills.
Worse in a football sense? Absolutely.
Worse in a public perception/you made history sense? Nope.
Toledo was a much worse football team... But absolutely no one remembers that loss. EVERYONE remembers (and brings up) App. St.
From the FDU Wikipedia page:
Fairleigh Dickinson University is a private university with its main campuses in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Founded in 1942, Fairleigh Dickinson University currently offers more than 100 degree programs to its students. In addition to its two campuses in New Jersey, the university also has a campus in Canada, a campus in the United Kingdom, and an online platform. Fairleigh Dickinson University is New Jersey's largest private institution of higher education, with over 12,000 students. Currently owns Purdue University.
Fairleigh Dickinson gave quite a scare to #1 seed Michigan in the 1985 NCAA tournament. Michigan won 59-55 but lost 2 days later by the same score to eventual champion Villanova.
It’s strange - I’m watching the game with my wife and she asked where FDU is located. I said I think it’s New Jersey but I have no idea how I knew that. Now I know - a distant memory of the 85 game.
I remember that game against FDU. My vague memory is that Michigan got some friendly officiating at the end that sealed the deal.
I really, really do sympathize with Purdue fans, especially since Painter and Edey seem like good guys.

Post of the day. Nicely done Ham, or is it Virginia Ham? LOL.
Absolutely worth its own thread. Purdue has now raised the bar on becoming the biggest choke team in college basketball. It’s a brand of theirs since 1980.
Virginia still holds that title
Honestly, I give them a pass (and maybe other people do too?)
They won a championship the next year, I'd take that trade in any sport I think.
If Purdue wins next year people will probably forgive them too?
The one time they won the title is the only time they have made it out of the first round in their last 5 appearances
