What the fuck are you talking about? To use the parlance of our times.

Being a 16th seed > winning the NIT. Objectively.

How would there be more shame in losing to a team that’s ostensibly better than any team M will face in the NIT? If M gets bounced at any point in the NIT, the prevailing assumption would be that they lost to a worse team than Purdue did. Shameful.
Even if M wins the NIT, it only gives an argument -and not a perfectly convincing one, though it’s fairly convincing- that they could have belonged as a 16 seed or so in the real tournament.

Just because we’re bereaved doesn’t make us saps!

Counterpoint: Purdue was giving more points than UVA did, and statistically it was the tallest team vs the smallest team in the country, a literal David vs Goliath. That to me is a story in its self. Plus the fact that FDU only got into the tournament as a technicality and didn't deserve to be in to begin with.

But agreed both were hilarious!

No way — not even close.  That UMBC team was relatively good — they were #188 in KenPom before the UVa game, and were the second #16 seed (out of 6).  Prior to the expansion to 65 teams, they would have been a 15 seed.

FDU didn’t win their conference.  They didn’t win their conference tournament.  They snuck in because the team that won both was Merrimack, and they’re still transitioning from D-II to D-I, so FDU got the automatic bid as the conference title game loser.  They were #298 on KenPom going into the game — in CMU territory.  Heck, they won 4 games last year!

The only bigger upset in NCAA history is Chaminade over UVa.

Yeah, I noted this in the game thread but App St. was a good football team when they beat Michigan. FDU wouldn't have even gotten into the tournament but the NCAA had a dumb rule saying you can't go to the postseason if you're transitioning to D1 so Merrimack (who won the league) got bypassed. It's unbelievable that this happened.

That App State team, if they could’ve been ranked as a Division 1A team at the time, probably would’ve been somewhere in the 35-45 range.  Still no excuse to lose to them at home when we’re ranked 5th, but it’s not as bad as the epic upset that the haters love to paint it.

We shouldn't have lost, but a typical FCS champion is probably about a 6-6 caliber team, if it were in the FBS.  It made history because an FCS team hadn't beaten a ranked FBS team to that point, but it's since happened a number of times.

That game was also a season opener, whereas Purdue tonight had an entire season to prepare for this tournament.
