OT: What's your favorite song from every band you ever listened to?

Submitted by Wendyk5 on February 23rd, 2023 at 4:13 PM

My husband and I are driving from Chicago to Phoenix next week to take in some Cubs spring training and have been looking for ways to bide the time during the drive. He came up with a game and we've been obsessed ever since. We're each creating a playlist consisting of our one favorite song from every band we ever liked or listened to. It's a daunting task considering we're both in our late 50's. We'll listen to and critique each others list over the course of the drive. He already has 6 hours worth of songs. I'm not suggesting you put your lists here, just giving you an interesting challenge in these football-free months. If you're into music, it actually can be a challenge to pick just one, especially from a favorite band.

I’ll narrow down to five of my current favorite artists and the song for each I think is good for meditative driving.

1. John Prine: souvenirs.
2. Van Morrison: astral weeks.
3. Grateful Dead: touch of grey.
4. New Order: Temptation.
5. The Kinks: Come Dancing.

Drive By Truckers - Outfit

Johnny Cash - Cocaine Blues

Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed

Beatles - Hide Your Love Away

Clash - Rudy Can't Fail

Lucero - On My Way Downtown

John Prine - Sweet Revenge

That should cover about an hour....safe travels!

Wendy did you come up more in the 80s or 90s (I supppse both?). I realize before hitting save that might be an asshole question regarding your age.  I just feel like seeing enough of your posts I have a rough inkling to your potential age and when for the average person music can be a big hobby/outlet/etc. (junior high into late-teens into 20s).

Annnnnyway, I personally would dig to see your final list of the challenge, eventually...especially if you were ever into the artists and songs not necessarily topping the "Billboard Top40".

And to not even answer the question, some newish artists I've been digging over the past year.  Children definitely put a damper on seeking "all of the music" one once could do.

Wet Leg

Houndmouth

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever

Rainbow Kitten Suprirse

Girl in Red

Royal Otis

Japanese Breakfast

Equal amounts of 70's songs, too. I'm 57. So I have basically five decades to comb through. Some bands I'm not bothering with, like those who only had a couple of songs and my interest in them was fleeting at the time. My earliest is probably Gimme Shelter (1969) and my most recent is Foo Fighters. Still haven't tackled the Beatles.

As a lifelong musician and music snob I will not partake in this.

Partly because I feel like my opinion is better than just about everyone here, and also because "If Being Fake Was An Olympic Sport".

This is a prime example of why the message board needs to be policed as closely as it is by those who are committed to discouraging unworthy posts, in order to make sure there is always room for such incredibly thread-worthy topics as this one.

If I narrow this down just to bands I've heard live and in person it's still an absurd question. Let's see, the first band I recall seeing live would have been the Michigan Marching Band, while "ushering" with my Cub Scout Pack. I can't recall what year, but it was more than 60 years ago. So, to commit heresy, I'll pick Temptation & Hawaiian War Chant over The Victors and Varsity (which is underappreciated, in my opinion)

I would have a very tough time picking just one song from Hillsong Worship. “What a Beautiful Name,” gets me every time.

Chris Tomlin’s “Good, Good Father” is also a personal favorite.

Towards the other end of the spectrum, perhaps, I never tire of Megitsune by BabyMetal.

haven’t heard of that one. I know he has a song from like 08 or so called Heaven is the Face. Is that the same thing?

I figured you might be familiar XM. I can think of a few other users who might recognize a lot of these. I do listen to other stuff, but if I have my choice, these kinds of artists from this era are my go-to.

To me, it depends so much on the mood.  I've a perpetual song in my head before I even wake up!  Sometimes very annoying, most times it's all good.  I never know what it will be nor why, I just try to embrace it.  So, with that said,

Into the mystic by Van Morrison, hit s me on so many levels.  It was my first dance with my wife at our reception.

Safe travels, I don't know you but I love you.
