OT: What's your favorite song from every band you ever listened to?
My husband and I are driving from Chicago to Phoenix next week to take in some Cubs spring training and have been looking for ways to bide the time during the drive. He came up with a game and we've been obsessed ever since. We're each creating a playlist consisting of our one favorite song from every band we ever liked or listened to. It's a daunting task considering we're both in our late 50's. We'll listen to and critique each others list over the course of the drive. He already has 6 hours worth of songs. I'm not suggesting you put your lists here, just giving you an interesting challenge in these football-free months. If you're into music, it actually can be a challenge to pick just one, especially from a favorite band.

February 23rd, 2023 at 6:56 PM ^

The Needle and the Spoon, that's Double Trouble
February 23rd, 2023 at 11:32 PM ^
How about three instead?

Sit back and enjoy.

Funny that you posted this becuase I just watched it the other day. But what the hell, I've got 15 minutes to spare...

What so is it you wanna hear?
FREEEEE BIIIRRRD

Thank you for posting.
“Freebird” is an essential part of my football tailgating “pre-game”. It’s what I play as I drive into the lot and begin setting up for the day’s festivities.
Go Blue! (And, the opener against East Carolina can’t get here soon enough.)
February 23rd, 2023 at 11:33 PM ^
You Got That Right.

Nope, this is an exercise in which I cannot participate. Too many great songs from too many artists - and what I feel like listening to changes with my current "feelz". But. Enjoy your ride and your tunes! 👍😁

I'll be the Ying to your Yang... and double up on my picks:
Led Zeppelin - Ten Years Gone, Going to California, Achilles Last Stand
Pink Floyd - Sheep, Welcome to the Machine
Tom Petty - It's Good to Be King (Live), You Wreck Me (Live) (Bonus - While My Guitar Gently Weeps from the Rock and Roll HoF)
U2 - Bad, anything from Joshua Tree
Aerosmith - Sweet Emotion, anything from Rocks
Genesis - Home by The Sea, Take Me Home, Domino, Land of Confusion
Elton John - Madman Across the Water, Where to Now St. Peter
Dire Straits - Calling Elvis, Romeo and Juliet
CSN - Wooden Ships, Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
Rolling Stones - Paint it Black, Sympathy for the Devil
Eric Clapton - The Core
Eagles - Hotel California, Those Shoes
February 23rd, 2023 at 9:02 PM ^
Oh, I've already changed my mind on a couple of them. I have to come up with a specific criteria to pick among bands like The Who and The Stones where the catalog is vast and there are so many good ones. I may say, "I love this one now but I loved that other one for so many years so I'm going with my original favorite."
February 23rd, 2023 at 4:45 PM ^
Interesting question and tough as hell to answer because it depends on the mood I'm in. But just off the top of my head, these are songs that I absolutely wouldn't want to be without from some of my favorite groups/bands:
David Bowie: Ziggy Stardust
Nirvana: Radio Friendly Unit Shifter
Beastie Boys: Sabotage
Talking Heads: Psycho Killer
U2: Sunday Bloody Sunday
Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here
Neil Young: Old Man
February 23rd, 2023 at 7:54 PM ^
You can start with For You and work from there...
February 23rd, 2023 at 4:48 PM ^
If you're into music, it actually can be a challenge to pick just one, especially from a favorite band.
Now that there is the truth. Thinking about it for a few seconds, I'd guess about half the bands I can think of have one clear favorite, the other half not so much.
February 23rd, 2023 at 4:48 PM ^
Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 - Mas Que Nada
Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence
Prince - When the Doves Cry
Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me
Weird Al Yankovich - Eat It
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird
February 23rd, 2023 at 4:55 PM ^
Mission Impossible! I'm not sure I could do it for the bands I saw live in, well, a long time ago.
February 23rd, 2023 at 8:30 PM ^
Yo dummy, you forgot the music!
This was just added to YT a couple of days ago - Isolated Tracks from Ronnie Wood's former housemate.

I'm a drummer so a big Neil Peart fan. Loved how he and Geddy Lee are so tight in the transitions. (Yes, Geddy's voice is an acquired taste but agreeable because the rest of the music is so exceptional, for my taste anyway.)
February 23rd, 2023 at 5:45 PM ^
You can never go wrong with Neil Peart. Those guys were elite.
February 23rd, 2023 at 7:29 PM ^
Wanted to share with you an iso of Danny Carey from Tool
February 23rd, 2023 at 7:54 PM ^
Awesome GBGW, thank you. Dude's got great chops.
February 23rd, 2023 at 7:40 PM ^
I'm not going to do it, I'm not going to do it, the hell I'm not!
Now, I don't do 'best', we get to enjoy them all.
I am going to toss in BJ Wilson, the octopus in a bathtub. Let us not forget that he turned down Page and Plant before Bonham joined Led Zeppelin.
Since I've admitted publicly to watching Ron Johnson vs Wisconsin I'll admit to seeing Procol Harum live for the first time in 1971. Ah, the Eastown.

The Grande perhaps?

Speaking of iconic old music halls, I saw Rush at Masonic Auditorium for their 2112 tour. I think the tickets were less than $10.

I kind of do the same thing with my brother, except B sides/unreleased songs only.

Anything by Barry Manilow, especially his rock classics!
February 23rd, 2023 at 7:03 PM ^
I am recalling WKRP in Cincinnati, where Dr. Johnny Fever spins around in his swivel chair and tosses a dart into a poster of Barry Manilow.
On the other hand, Mandy is a great song and "I'm stuck on Band-Aids" is a great jingle.
February 23rd, 2023 at 11:34 PM ^
Dude, Barry Manilow writes the songs.
February 23rd, 2023 at 5:05 PM ^
"Alabama," by John Coltrane. For sentimental reasons.
February 23rd, 2023 at 5:14 PM ^
Radiohead - any song from Ok Computer or Kid A.
Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon... but it's impossible to only listen to one song.
Pixies - anything off of Surfa Rosa
Pavement - all of Wowee Zowee
Fuck favorite songs, favorite albums yes.
February 23rd, 2023 at 5:27 PM ^
Fuck, you said you're in your late 50s.
David Bowie - Space Oddity
Velvet Underground - Pale Blue Eyes
Lou Reed - Sweet Jane
Patti Smith - Dancing Barefoot
Beatles - honestly you can never go wrong with any era of Beatles
Beach Boys - too many to choose from if you like pop surf rock
February 23rd, 2023 at 8:40 PM ^
Intro - Sweet Jane off their live album is one of my favorite songs.
February 23rd, 2023 at 5:15 PM ^
I heard “In the Big House” by Pop Evil is a banger. Give that a shot.
February 23rd, 2023 at 5:56 PM ^
Can anyone name any other Pop Evil song? I know who they are because of the song.
For those who haven't heard the song
February 23rd, 2023 at 5:17 PM ^
Great idea! But it will take a year. Every band one has ever listened to?
I’ll be back with an answer next OT season.
February 24th, 2023 at 1:07 AM ^
I tried starting with my favorite band, Fishbone, and am still ruminating. So many candidates… Sunless Saturday, Lemon Meringue, Unyielding Conditioning, Pressure, Behavior Control Technician, Question of Life, Everyday Sunshine…
I’ll get back to you.

My mother listened to Iron Butterfly and I have her original In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida album, which I will hand down to my son, who's almost 23 and listens to records on a turn table. Love that song.
Check out Garth Brooks playing "Hard Luck Woman" alongside KISS. It's a trip.
February 23rd, 2023 at 10:28 PM ^
I forgot about Garth doing that song. I don’t like Kiss so I don’t know how the original song goes but I liked the Garth version
February 23rd, 2023 at 11:36 PM ^
Musically it's almost exactly the same. Acoustic-y (Can't remember if there's any electric guitar in it at all), and the vocals are pretty similar, too. Kind of raspy and folky. Very un-KISS like.
