Ohio State's Tony Alford to Michigan as new RBs coach
Rumored all morning, confirmed by (sorry) Pete Thamel: https://twitter.com/PeteThamel/status/1767940264398582174
Those commercials haunted me as a kid but bring me great joy now.
I LOVED those ads. Those were brilliant.

i mean, apart from it being hilarious, how do we feel about this?

The comedy value of hoisting a coach from an arch-rival for a lateral move is enough for it to be cool with me. Also it's good that he's from Ohio. Helps shore up the loss of Clink

i imagine a closed door meeting of the coaching staff, with moore starting with: "guys... you know what would be hilarious?"

"...as a bit"
I, for one, respect the commitment to the bit

I really wanted this to happen when McCord hit the portal.

In terms of recruiting, it's a huge upgrade. Alford has also produced some damn good RBs when Day isn't getting cute with his run game. It's been hard to accurately judge how good Alford has been as a coach recently because Day's running scheme has been atrocious and their OL has not been catered to the run game. Those shouldn't be issues with Sherrone imo. Alford's recruiting chops plus a team that actually wants to and does run the ball should be a recipe for success
He is a great coach, but not a great recruiter. He has been at OSU since 2015. He recruited or assisted in the recruiting of Elliot 2013, Weber 2015, Dobbins 2017, Teague 2018 and Henderson 2021.
Teague was good not great. Since 2017 the only great back he signed was Henderson.
As for his coaching ability, look the the difference in Dobbins from his Jr to Sr year, he made an elite jump.
Yeah, I would just hate to have a nearly uninterrupted string of Zeke, Weber, Dobbins, Henderson. What magic was Ohio State using to make their offense work with such slim pickings?
Wow, what a 9 year run, only 2 of those backs are in the league. You can have these elite players and still be a bad recruiter when you don’t have depth. You’re also giving him credit for landing those players, you must’ve followed Ohio State recruiting close enough to know he didn’t close the deal on two of those backs.
OSU was simply lucky that Henderson came back this year and they were able to pick up a stud in the portal. Without that they would have no true RB1.
This isn’t some crazy take, his lack of recruiting is well known. There’s a reason his contract was not extended, and it wasn’t because of his coaching ability. You either have no clue or your trolling.
PS: I incorrectly stated that he participated in Ezekiel Elliotts recruitment. He did not, it was Stan Drayton and Urban Meyer.
With exception of Teague and IMHO arguably Henderson those are great recruits. Elliot was a generational talent, Dobbins compares reasonably well with Corum and Weber was solid.
I think Dobbins and Corum are very comparable backs. JK seem to have more breakaway speed but they are very similar talents. Elliot was generational without a doubt. Alford coached Zeke but he didn’t recruit him. He is universally, regarded as a great coach, it is a nice win for Michigan.

Was RB/AHC Coach from 2015-23. It pains me to say it, but they put out a lot of great college RBs. Curtis Samuel, Zeke, Weber, Dobbins, Teague, Miyan, Henderson. We've had a lot of great ones too, and this seems like a great addition outside of him being OSU. This also helps to bring experience to a really young coaching staff.

Serious question..how do we not know he is a plant and will leak Michigan's playbook to OSU?
March 13th, 2024 at 12:25 PM ^
I asked the same question (with a low level of seriousness) in the other thread. I wouldn't put anything past those hillbillies. But, if Alford quit mid-season the desperation down there would be obvious.

I'd have to assume a coach doing so to any program would find themselves effectively blacklisted in the future. No one would hire you ever again.
March 13th, 2024 at 12:30 PM ^
...except the program you're spying for.
you were 9% serious before. are you saying you're going up to 9.5%? 10%?
Incremented to 10.3%.
Ohio State already has Michigan's playbook, and all of our signs.

Erased from (OSU) history forever.

If the remaining guy were still around, he'd be admired by a subset of the MGoBlog readership.

Fuck Stalin!
- Tito (probably)
(This is one of my favorite historic dictator rivalries)
Do you mean those who would willingly vote for someone who has suggested shooting protesters in the street, says the executive is above the law, openly praises despots, and said he’d like to be a dictator for one day?
4GodKing, I see you are unfamiliar with the concepts of humor and exaggeration.
Great (hilarious) take!

Wonder if he knows anything about Day's private investigator or any other unsavory stuff within the program...

LETS FUCKING GO!!!!!! SCREW THE CRYING WEASEL BUCKEYES.

OSU has the only crystal ball for Top 100 RB Bo Jackson from Villa Angela St Joe, the same HS that Desmond and Elvis graduated. Hopefully, Tony comes to town and brings Bo with him.
March 13th, 2024 at 12:10 PM ^
Bo Jackson? Thought he was headed to Auburn.
March 13th, 2024 at 12:28 PM ^
I think he's out of eligibility.
March 13th, 2024 at 12:31 PM ^
and hips.
Too soon.
March 13th, 2024 at 12:43 PM ^
Bo knows….
Just using this opportunity to remind everyone that Jim Harbaugh has more NFL rushing yards than Bo Jackson
I didn't collect a lot of baseball / football cards, but I collected Bo Jackson cards. Was so bummed when he got hurt. I don't know what happened to them. I have a suspicion my brother took them.
Good god what a football name. DO want.
Will he come to Michigan? Only Bo Knows.

The Coach to Be Named Later in the Greg Mattison deal.
March 13th, 2024 at 12:41 PM ^
Fuck Greg forever. The ultimate Benedict Arnold.
I mean, I hated his departure for OSU as much as the next guy, and not to be pedantic or anything, but I’m pretty sure Benedict Arnold is the ultimate Benedict Arnold…
Seems a little redundant when his name is the epithet.
