MSU football news: I'm not entirely sure what this means but it sounds bad
I guess this is why you don't let message boards run your athletic department

There's been an update since that report. https://spartanshadows.com/michigan-state-football-players-reportedly-having-nil-deals-canceled/
30-35 deals canceled for football players. All basketball deals remain. Another collective has stepped in to pick up the pieces.

Where do you see the 30-35 number? It wasn’t in the link at the time I clicked it.

I swear it was in the link, but..... I see it's not when I click on it.

Does this mean we should now pick msu to cover that 10.5 point spread??
September 30th, 2023 at 8:54 AM ^
I was thinking MSU actually had a chance tonight since Iowa can't score and the Spartans could keep it close.
Now, I am not so sure. If ever there was a night for a team to be totally flat, or for players to bolt, this would be it.

What website is that? Spartans Had Ows? I'll say...
Also, where does it say 30-35 football players? Still not in the article.

Fool me once....
"When Michigan State hires its next head coach, we will forget this ever happened because the team will still be signing NIL deals through SD4L."
September 30th, 2023 at 1:53 AM ^
I am altering the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further. #SD4L*
*Life or a limited time, whichever comes first.

That 2021 “loss” in EL is looking more profitable everyday.
Thanks Kenneth Walker.

I don’t know all the details, but if I’m an MSU player with an NIL deal through this collective, I’m seriously considering never playing another down for MSU and sitting out the rest of this season to preserve my eligibility.

I'll never not relish in their fanbase imploding
September 30th, 2023 at 7:13 AM ^
It’s hard for me to even feel my typical schadenfreude at this point. It’s beyond pathetic.

Is this St Andre trying to punish the board for leaking the story and Tracy's name? Clearly it's the players actually getting punished, but seems pretty odd to pull their deals mid-season.
Even though there's beautiful irony in Saban whining about NIL from the start, I can't recall anything he's said about NIL that I disagree with. It's a shitshow with no rules, being applied in a completely imbalanced way by outside boosters who have no oversight. (So almost like the before times, but now it's ok to do in broad daylight.) Meanwhile the TV $ is still not making it back to the players.

ST. Andre runs a sweatshop digital agency that’s basically a joke in the Detroit advertising community. Everyone who’s worked there has had nothing good to say about the experience, and they recently went through mass layoffs.

So wealthy guy tries to create something that he hopes average plebians will ultimately fund. They don't and so he is pulling the plug.
It sounds more like a marketing ploy for self aggrandizement - similar to those fiascos where so-called influencers try to create an event.
Suspect he saw the financial spreadsheets and realized this was a dead project - and saw this current mess as a chance to sneak out. When the whole house is burning down, the microwave blowing up isn't as noticeable.

The tunnel incident coupled with the intent to injure at Big House last year hit home with me, Their long history of hitting late especially when games are lost are well documented. Ghoulson’s attempt to break Denard’s neck was disgusting. Going back to 1984, they knocked Jim Harbaugh out for the season on a cheap shot. I vividly recall that one. I had a perfect view of him diving for loose ball on his stomach reaching for the fumble. Sparty went straight for his arm, not the ball. Elephants, Schembechler, Ufer, and JH never forget, If we have them down next month, in East Lansing, he will run it up, and I will be there to enjoy every second of it.

Maybe MSU’s two biggest donors are livid nobody in East Landfill tipped them off about the Mel Tucker investigation? Mat Ishbia pulled his football NIL over the summer, dubiously implying the NBA made him. Weeks prior, Ishbia was sitting court side with Tucker at the NBA playoffs in May. And now Steve St Andre pulls his NIL the night before a big away game, with red shirts and free transfers in the air. Sounds like Sparty’s biggest donors are done with the circus.

Mat Ishbia pulled his NIL over the summer, dubiously claiming the NBA made him.
I can believe that one. There would be a serious conflict of interest if NBA owners were allowed to bankroll college players.
September 30th, 2023 at 12:50 PM ^
The timeline:
- December 2022: Ishbia family buys Phoenix Suns NBA franchise
- December 2022: Mel Tucker Title IX complaint filed
- March 2023: Tucker makes statements to investigator which will lead to his firing for cause
- May 2023: Mat Ishbia and Mel Tucker court side together at Suns playoff game
- June 2023: Ishbia’s company pulls NIL funding from MSU
- July 2023: Title IX investigation concludes

It’s not about not being tipped off. It’s about supporting Tucker.

The wheels have come off the wagon. Dark days lie ahead in E Lansing.

Spartans being put to the test of their claim that they're a "Top10-15" program. Does feel like this will spend the rest of this year getting worse before it gets better.

NIL is the wild west, and I don't think anyone is telling these teenagers they are making deals with unregulated robber-barons, not accountable entities. But this is the landscape most people seem to be cheering for, somehow believing that most athletic departments are revenue positive, that full ride + scholarships are nothing (those of us in debt paying for college know otherwise), and that the current acceleration of dump-trucking of money into college football is sustainable.
September 30th, 2023 at 11:31 AM ^
I'm going to assume all these NIL arrangements were handshake deals and there is no written contract. It's a shitty thing to do to the players, even Spartans.
September 30th, 2023 at 1:02 PM ^
Yeah, I'm rooting for a landscape where players are allowed to get paid to make social media posts that promote a product. What a monster I am.
September 30th, 2023 at 2:01 PM ^
The real 21st century monsters are those execrable social media influencers, where it's unknown where the line of paid promotion begins. You are at least advocating something that resembles transactional transparency.

The OSU team is a rival.....the MSU team is just a collection of douchebags. So:

School donations are known to spike upward when a team has a great season or great stretch of seasons. I first saw this with NW 1995 when they went 8-0 in the B1G and went to RB. Similar with UM 1997, MSU 2013-15, etc. Unfortunately, whereas schools like NW and UM seem to have a steady stream of donors, in good times and bad, MSU's donor pools are the 100 bucks a year variety, except for years like 2021, when Marvelous Mel went 2-0 vs. JH to open his less than 4 year career. The big bucks are betting on hoops only. Hence, those players keep their NILs.
I absolutely love the timing on this! The next three weeks, Sparty plays at Iowa, has a bye week with the Title IX hearing, followed by what I expect to be Loss 4 of 9 or 10 at a much better (Under Greg) Rutgers. Mork even said - things can always get worse (like he said during their 3-9 season).
As somebody else pointed out, many of us USED to feel sorry for our little bros. I remember cringing when they melted down after 3 years of Muddy Waters (80-82, even losing at home to a NW team that had won 1 game in the previous 4 years). The back to back losses at home to open the season vs. CMU under Perles. Bobby Williams "I don't know (if I've lost the team)" after 49-3 in 2002 in A2. Even John LLLLLLLL with the halftime meltdown interview "coaches are screwing this up!" at Ohio in 2015.
That all ended on Day 1 of Mork "moment of silence after The Horror", "pride goes before the fall", "60 minutes of necessary roughness (Narduzzi)", "it'll never be over" and so on. I'm 60 now so I may never live to see the day when MSU actually plays with class and loses anyway.
Go Hawkeyes, Go Scarlet Knights, GO BLUE!

Screw all of them, they are getting everything they deserve. I hope all of this craters them, forever.
their “brand”, in my opinion, is and has been associated with hatred, jealousy and evil. That’s their brand. And it’s disgusting

I guess 4L only means 6 months or whatever it was.

Could this be an attempt at a Colorado model? Get rid of as many players as they can so the new coach has more room to bring in transfers?
