Michigan rolled over and played Dead: Jim is out for the rest of the season

The Michigan-B1G investigation is over. Jim Harbaugh will not be on the sidelines for the next two games, and then will be eligible to return. pic.twitter.com/QtqXwf0IQm

My instinct is the university was fighting so hard with the expectation of Harbaugh staying. Because if he stayed on, they wouldn't want him suspended in the future and also it is a show of support.

I really really really hope I am wrong but this feels like everyone has weighed their options and it is the last year for Jim.

Can we cut out the homer commentary in the headlines? Save it for the comments. You don't know what they discussed. This strategy could very well help preempt more aggressive penalties from the NCAA. We don't know.

This was a dick measuring contest from the start.  Sometimes when you feel caught in the dick measuring loop it makes sense to just stop, take a step back, ask what you're getting out of it and then go for a peaceful settlement that will hopefully end it.  Especially when you don't want to spend millions of dollars in legal fees for noting.

For whatever reason the "OSU and Rutgers shared our signals with Purdue." thing went nowhere at that point extending the PR battle feels dumb.  Just accept, call it a day, and then get ready to fight dirty if anyone tries to pull this crap again.  Michigan got done dirty, but they need to clean house.

If JH is innocent and its all a witchhunt and the University is 100% committed to JH, then how to they agree to the suspension?? Something isn't right here. I bet there is much more going on that they want to bury. It'll get leaked to Thamel and Michigan will get further embarrassed.  SPINELESS!!!

I think I'm now more pissed at UM than at Ryan Day.  Everyone who said Michigan is dirty and this whole thing was terrible can forever say they were right.  We just told the world we agree.

You're getting down voted but we all feel the same way.  It's only 3 games but it's the 3 most important games and it's flat out injustice.  If any of us were him, why deal with being treated like a POS when you've proven you do everything to abide by the rules?  I hope his connection to the team is strong enough to withstand that, but won't blame him either way.

Wow!!!  At this point, Michigan should let Jim take the stand and fight this punishment.

In hindsight, Michigan should have accepted this punishment initially.  NCAA could hammer Michigan.

Stop being so petulant, you can’t always get what you want. If we thought we could have won we would have. We have no idea what exchanges happened between the judge and our lawyers. I imagine they did not bode well for us

Just a few hours ago everyone was lauding the fight of Michigan, Harbaugh, Ono, etc.  Now that they've all made a decision, it might make sense to withhold judgment for a couple of hours until the facts start dribbling out.  Perhaps they didn't go to bed smart last night, only to wake up stupid this morning.  When it comes to settlements, the hot takes are often the wrong takes.

Dislike the "rolled over and played Dead" characterizzation in the post title. YMMV.  There are all sorts of reasons beyond the merits to just nip this thing in the bud.

  • No further JH sanction from the B1G would be one. B1G championship and CFP/Bowl game are not at risk.
  • A quid pro quo for a "completely unrelated"/ "pursue other opportunities" resignation by Tony once the season concludes would be another.
  • An agreement to stop digging now that B1G has its pound of flesh would be another (see whispers re some other coach something in earlier thread comments)

if this is the path Michigan wants to take then so be it, but I wonder what options they are exploring behind-the-scenes. If any.

At face value, what looks like this is setting a precedent for is that the next time the Big Ten coaches want a pound of flesh from Harbaugh and by extension Michigan, they’re going to get it.

i’m really worried that this is a “if you give a mouse a cookie“ situation.

But this is Michigan’s decision, and so be it. The biggest statement you can make right now is just to win.

It says “part of the settlement”

If it includes petty titty leaving early next year - say, “to pursue other opportunities “

I might be able to swallow this.

As it stands, the rug has been pulled out from under Wolverine Nation. I still love the players.

I think this may have been to appease the mob thats starting to form.

Now, especially if Michigan continues to win the rhetoric will quite down.

We need to pull together and support out team.

Annoying but it was the right thing to do. Knowing or not, this shit happened on his watch. With that daid, I hope they announce an extension immediately

Harbaugh likely decided that he’s done with this shit and is gone after the bowl game if he doesn’t resign before then. Sherrone is our new coach now. He’s our David Shaw. Lol what a joke. You agree to what was already handed to you? Wtf kind of negotiation is that. Stupid stupid stupid

Did you ever think if the universities president was willing to send a letter to the Big Ten to tell them to go fuck themselves that maybe some new information has came out. Don't know, but maybe the negotiation is that it doesn't go public or we'll find out in the next few days.

If Harbaugh wouldve won this .. it would’ve dragged on into next year . BIG10 would’ve tried to add more games , maybe even BIG10 Title game this year .NCAA is expediting its findings is also a major thing.  NCAA sees a 3 game suspension already as part of the punishment.

Who gives a shit about the title game. An undefeated Michigan is getting into the playoffs and everyone would have known that whoever won the title game didn't really win.

No school has been punished this much for so little. This has set a precedent that Michigan will be punished more than anyone and nothing can be done. Others like OSU can cheat in other ways but Michigan can't because if they pay for a fucking burger they get a hammer.

Michigan has decided it's ok to be a punching bag.

Was it a near certainty that a decision would've been made in court tomorrow one way or another? Or could the judge have delayed the decision, asked for more information, pushed it to a different court or something along those lines?

The only way the settlement makes sense to me is if UM knew there was a strong chance of no verdict tomorrow. In which case Jim misses the Maryland game anyway and then the court stuff drags on into next week, still with no guarantees.
