Locked On Wolverines: Michigan changed its own signs because signs stolen in 2017, 18, etc.

I enjoyed listening to this discussion of the NCAA and its BS agenda:

https://youtu.be/RUayj__tD-M?si=_rk5MuIUkpFyVpTA

The most interesting part to me was when the guy discussed - with pretty certain knowledge it seems - that Michigan was a victim of sign stealing in the past, in particular during the Game in some past years (like '18). Thus, Michigan, according to this guy, Michigan has gotten a lot better at concealing what it's doing.

(fyi: I have nothing to do with the Locked On Wolverines pod/youtube - I just listen to it occasionally)

I remember the NW game in 2018 being a situation where even Brian noted "wow, these NW LBs seemingly know when to blitz and when to hold back all game" and I assumed it was because UM was tipping their plays or NW had figured out a signal.  And they were doing that from the jump; UM had 21 yards of total offense while NW built a 17-0 lead.  That's what you'd expect from a team that had signs, not waiting for a half and then deploying it.

Maybe there's holes in the idea, but wouldn't it be better to wait it out and deploy it in the second half? I mean, sure, if you're playing through the first and you are getting beat, then go for it as soon as possible. Theoretically though, wouldn't it be better to hang around in the first half and apply extra curricular knowledge in the second half in hopes that the opposing team won't be able to adjust on the fly without the benefit of halftime?

Bottom Line: What team is NOT trying to steal signs?

Who's the victim? Michigan may be better at concealing their signs. Remember the NASCAR image from a few years ago? Some teams had that sign and we all knew it meant for a hurry-up offensive play, even if was a disguise.

I remember my son’s 3rd grade little league baseball team learning about signs and the “activator”. If you don’t see the activator, all that signaling is jibberish. Stealing signs is part of every game. Football, especially as it mimics warfare (the trenches, throw the bomb, etc.) lends itself to sign stealing. Should we be upset that the Allies broke the Nazis code?

What is so infuriating about the NCAA is that in their messaging they are conflating stealing signs, which is not against the rules, with in-person scouting which is against the rules.

Michigan is being investigated for the latter.

Interesting.  But at this point sign stealing isn't the issue.  It's well known that it happens and almost every team tries to do it.

The accusation is that Michigan was doing it illegally.  And there have been vague references that maybe we were transferring information illegally too.

The NCAA doesn't operate by the same rules that govern law enforcement. If you don't give up the computer, then you're not in compliance and they can assume guilt or penalize you for non-compliance, like they did when Harbaugh "lied" to them about cheeseburgers.

Deleting files isn't scrubbing. That stuff can generally be restored. If they find evidence that you deleted evidence, see above.

Michigan has built a state-of-the-art analytics organization, probably modelled on leading edge NFL thought, that has now lapped the competitiion in situational predictive capability.  What people forget is that you can use this predictive capability to study yourself, in order to find patterns and tells that may tip off others. UM is not just figuring out the opponent, they are making it harder for the opponent to predict us.  Except for the dive play...

Everyone steals signs. If Michigan had their opponents' signs, and the opponents didn't realize that and immediately change them, it's on them. Sign stealing is a part of the game and has been for decades.

'(fyi: I have nothing to do with the Locked On Wolverines pod/youtube - I just listen to it occasionally)"

So you're maintaining that you're not a part of a vast network?

"Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?"

We can replace Mr. Brightside for one game, no?

by all means, let's toss another "this may not be true, but i heard it on good authority" log into this inferno of stupidity.

made-up stuff - in either direction - is just making this whole thing even dumber.

Born on Third really is the perfect nickname for Day.  Harbaugh nailed it.

Only thing close woule be Coach Karen, as he will call the manager on you.

Guy is so soft....They only lose when

1) Clemson steals their signs

2) Too cold, had flu

3) 5 bad plays

4) 2 and 3 now trumped by "sign stealing"

5) Georgia "cheated", it was targeting

For OSU and Karen Day, they've only lost to Bama in that National Title Game 52-24, but I'm sure they'll dig up something on Saban or Devontae Smith was on steroids!!!! to get 215 yards.

What a soft ass program

Rich Eisen had Dan Wetzel on, who broke the story . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8WF1jTAui0

He said highly unlikely someone from the university was scouting games in person because there would be an accounting record and it would mean a lot of people were in on it.. Theory he floated is someone not employed by the university was scouting signs,  That is what I thought made the most sense given the vast network wording and Harbaugh's forceful denial. And Wetzel thinks that might be legal.

A headline I would like to see:

"Michigan prepared to release evidence of conference members doing exactly the same thing they are accused of doing regarding scouting practices."

That would cause a few issues. If Ohio State found our guy, I am sure we found theirs. Same with msu, PSU and others. That is why we changed our own signs last year.  Who knows. Am I hoping for too much? No, I am not.

I think we need to blame Mike Mcdonald and Jesse Minter. This all supposedly started in 2021 when Michigan d stopped playing man every down. Also we should probably put some of the blame on Aidan since he wrecked every opponent.
