Not shocked, but at the same time...damn. Assume they told him they were hitting the portal for an established QB and he saw the writing on the wall.

This is going to become more common. We saw it last year with Deion forcing kids out. Dirty game.

Transfer portal goes both ways. I don’t think he could force McCord out, but he can definitely tell him there will be more competition next year.

Harbaugh did this with Shea, O’Korn, and OL. It sucks when it happens, but the transfer portal is overall good imo. Also, I think it brings more balance to the teams. It makes smaller schools less likely to compete, but there are more schools in a given year who can compete and it’s only been a few years.

I think you are exactly right but McCord will be in his 4th year in that system next year.  This is one where I don't think the grass is going to be greener (or at least as green as they think) on the other side. 2019 was a bit different because they seemed to have nobody if he didn't show up.  Kyle McCord lost 1 game and was a 5-star QB.

lol! Shitshow.

They probably know they are bringing in a transfer starting QB, but still.

Jyaire Brown, Kyle Stokes, Evan Pryor, Ryan Turner, Cam Martinez, and Victor Cutler are also in the portal for the Buckeyes.

Michigan will lose some (Hibner has been in or planning to go in since September), but it shouldn't be nearly that bad.

Honestly, I haven’t heard many strong links to transfer QBs in currently in the portal. A lot of smoke about WSU’s Cam Ward, but Ryan Day seemed to have shot those down.

RsFr. Devin Brown did compete against McCord in fall camp, and McCord didn’t win the starting job until week 3. Brown got a pretty nasty ankle injury mid-season and hasn’t come back since then.

There’s also true freshman Lincoln Kienholz in the roster who was a pretty highly regarded recruit - he played high school ball though in a traditionally under-recruited/small region. I haven’t heard a lot about him in practice yet. Most attention has mostly been devoted to McCord/Brown battle.

The other transfers make more sense:

  • CB Jyaire Brown, CB Ryan Turner: Both got passed in the depth chart by true freshmen Jermaine Mathews Jr. and Calvin Simpson-Hunt this season - Plus, Devin Igbinson and Jordan Hancock are both expected to come back and anchor the CB1/CB2 spots.
  • S Kyle Stokes & S Cam Martinez: Sonny Styles is not eligible for the draft; JaHad Carter & Fr. Malik Hartford were the first safeties off the bench this year.
  • RB Evan Pryor: Somewhat unexpected, but sounds like someone that wants a fresh start. Pryor was suppose to be RB3 in 2022 behind Henderson/Miyan Williams before he was lost for the season with a pretty bad knee injury. Pryor hasn’t been higher than 5th on the depth chart since the injury.
  • C Victor Cutler: Transferred in this season in hopes of immediate starting role at Center, but RsFr. Hinzman won the job. Likely transferring out in hopes of another immediate starting role elsewhere.

Thanks for the added info Scarlatina!  What are your thoughts on this McCord news? If McCord is leaving and they do not have a plan to bring in a new name and are just going to roll with what they have, that has to be worst case scenario.  D. Brown showed some flashes but barely got any playing time due to injury or Day always keeping his starters in late in games.  This is just my opinion, but if you all don't get a big name portal QB the Buckeye fanbase is going to flip out.

Current signs seems to point to them rolling with what that have on the roster right now. I actually thought Ryan Day pulled starters super early this season due to rampant injuries last season and the beginning of this season. Day did keep McCord in for much longer, I suspect to get him some more game reps, but he was often passing to backup receivers or handing off to our 3rd string RB. In terms of the rest of the room…

RsFr. Devin Brown makes the most logical choice. He narrowly lost the QB battle this offseason to McCord, and Ryan Day said that McCord primarily won the job due to “consistency.” Day felt that McCord never got rattled or emotional, and played even-keeled regardless of the moment. Brown was the more mobile option of the two, and a slight downgrade as a passer.

True freshman Lincoln Kienholz did not enroll early, so he has only been on campus since August. It would be surprising for Day to choose a starter who has been in the program for 4 months. However, Kienholz was a top-150 recruit and the #11 QB last year coming out of South Dakota - coaches seemed pretty excited to get him during the offseason.

If OSU reaches for a portal QB - I suspect it would be someone with only a year of eligibility left.

That would be SPECTACULAR

When I was a senior at Air Force, we played the bucks and it was supposed to be lambs to the slaughter. osu walked into the pregame stuff, the team togetherness stuff (Liberty Bowl) very cocky and then got their asses whooped by a bunch of future fighter pilots.

It was glorious. My four years at AF was complete.

He’s a good QB looking at Seth’s breakdown. This makes life easier for Michigan next year, especially if Knowles leaves. I’m sure they’ll have a good QB, but one without experience playing Michigan.

That makes sense why Ryan Day was very non-committal in interviews this week about Kyle McCord remaining the starter going forward. Everyone thought it was hot air.

There have been rumors that Ohio State was in the running for WSU’s Cam Ward and potentially Texas’s Arch Manning has been weighing his options on transferring with Quinn Ewers supposedly staying another year.

Jim should go get him.  Betrayal and revenge is a strong selling point.  Then McCord can provide helpful intel like Cade used to help Iowa come somewhat close to the red zone…once

Wow. It took a week for Day to dump his QB when there are so many issues. They couldn't win with Stroud.

Keep doing what you are doing Day. Don't ever think that problem is YOU.
