Hoops Snowflakes thread

How many times do we need to see this type of flailing by the basketball team at the end of games.

I watched this whole game, been watching since Campy Russell and CJ Cupek and I was screaming at the TV because of how they were coached and played from the end of the 1st OT till the end, truly pathetic.

What the fuck are you even talking about? Who is getting banned for saying Harbaugh being replaced? Were you here in 2020? I don't remember anyone getting banned for saying it and plenty of people were. Anyone arguing that Harbaugh should be replaced now is a fucking idiot that probably should be banned just to maintain a certain IQ level on the board.

The mods do a damn good job around here. I don't know what your problem is with them.

Nope. I asked peoples opinions of replacenents , i brought up Deboer from Washington . That's it. As a long time season ticket holder and a fan that's been to countless road games, not to mention a visitor to team practices, side line passes. I guess that makes me a troll as I was called when I made the post, a Karen whatever you want to call me, so be it

You weren't banned. Your account is still active. You were sent to Bolivia for a bit because you were arguing with everyone in the thread you created.

And just looking through your posting history since then, it seems like you are holding a pretty strong grudge about it. My advice would be just to let it go. Complaining about it and blaming the mods is just a bad look.

Juwan is just a tall version of Tommy Amaker.  It’s the same level of maddening mediocrity where the whole is always less than the sum of the parts.

You have nailed it.  Except Tommy didn't have anger issues.

I literally cringe to read about any game I don't watch to see if the post game includes an incident with a referee or opposing coach.

If anyone thinks it is not going to happen in the future you are kidding yourselves.  This from a guy who grew up in the same era as Fab 5.  Boggled how the "dad" of the Fab 5 has turned into a piece of dynamite who will blow up any moment and our enabler Warde is good with it.

In my view, he deserves more time.  Florida is looking more and more like a Sweet 16 team every day.  It is not easy to win on a neutral court especially at this point in the season.  There is a lot of basketball left one game does not a season make.  They have been making adjustments that I think will bode well in Big Ten play - a Big Ten that is getting easier next year, PS.  We have had close losses to Memphis (who some say is the best team in the country) and LBSU who is also very good.

You don't get consolation prizes for close loses particularly when they are self inflicted with a lack of effort on defense and rebounding, and the offensive end devolving into bad iso ball on crucial possessions over and over again. They aren't losing because of flukes, they are losing because the things they don't do well throughout the game get magnified even more late in close games.

Anyone who will coach fundamentals and effort. I can live with a lot of things but the consistent lack of progress in those two areas I can’t deal with. Florida isn’t a good ball team and I’m not sure I care for their style at all but they won that game on effort alone.

Let's be honest, though. Juwan isn't getting fired mid-season, especially just coming off heart surgery. Warde will chalk this year up to that, and juwan will get one more year after this one - love it or hate it. As long as the team doesn't lose 15 of the next 20, that is.

I do think dug and tarris will come back, plus maybe some additional continuity/new guys. There is a chance this is a pretty good team next year. A guy can hope!

This is where I am. Harbaugh's covid year didn't cost him his job, and Juwan's heart surgery year isn't going to cost him his. If next year isn't a lot better, changes will be made.

Hopefully Juwan makes changes of his own this summer. Sanderson will get replaced, obviously. Juwan needs to use the rest of this year to figure out whether more changes are in order, too.

The problem with this take is that this year isn’t Howard’s first bad year. Michigan missed the tournament last year. So this is going to be his second-straight bad year. And had Harbaugh had a bad year after the COVID year, he would have been fired.

How about roster building?!

Pretty goddamn insane we have zero depth and almost the full starting lineup playing 40+ minutes.

This isn't a winning program as currently run. It's time to try something else.

I mean the reality is this is starting to parrallal the end of Hoke's tenure in football. Even the beginning of  it with one pretty good season with the previous guys players is the same. Anyone who sees something different, I would question what the hell team you are even watching at this point. The lack of fundamentals, effort on defense and the boards and late game offensive possessions devolving into bad iso ball play calls is the norm at this point. Quite a bit of the blame for that becoming the norm has to fall on the coaching staff.

I thought they played a *hell* of a game, as the underdog, against a team ranked higher than them, and if Florida doesn't get a rebound-outlet-3 at the end of the first overtime (which is almost impossible to guard, as everyone's crashing the glass), and hit it despite being only 25% for the game, we win ... or if Burnett hits his subsequent clean shot at the end we win.

Nobody's happy that we lost. But this team fought hard, Dug McDaniel and Nkamhoua are a lot of fun to watch, TWII is significantly better than he was last year, and people who say there's no progress are wrong. Fuck it. I enjoy watching this team play, and I'll continue to hope that at some point our record in soul-crushing close games will return to the mean. I see a lot of progress over last year, and I remain solidly in Juwan's corner.

If you can enjoy the same consistent ways to fail game after game then I gotta hand it to you, you have steel in your spine. I am ok with off nights shooting, other team is just better, a lucky bounce, wrong end of the officiating stick, etc. but what I can’t watch is poor fundamentals, turnovers, poor defensive effort, lack of rebounding, hero ball, poor timeout management, etc. Props to you for being able to see a silver lining here!

I feel like Juwan should have made at least two staff changes this past offseason and he didn’t. Because of that, you can’t really afford to give him another mulligan and do it this off-season. He pretty much lived and died with these assistants and it didn’t work out.

Thank you for saying this!! When last season ended I was convinced that the only way Juwan could turn this around was by making major changes on his staff (i.e. AT LEAST two new assistants). When no changes were made, I feared that we would get to this point. The chemistry with this staff has been off for at least 2 years now, it just doesn't generate the juice we need and doesn't put kids in the best position to win games. If he didn't make any changes last year, I highly doubt that he will make changes now (while I do love coach Howard, it is clear to me that he is extremely stubborn and headstrong). Coach B had to humble himself MULTIPLE times throughout his career, Harbaugh does it nearly every season. Stagnation rarely leads to success

Your "lived and died" phrasing is cringey (even if unintentional) since Juwan seems to have been busy this off season trying not to become a fatality statistic.

I wonder if the lack of improvement year to year is coaching related or roster continuity related.  I also wonder if "continuity" is now a quaint, antiquated ideal.  I do know that fundamental skills have gone the way of the buggy whip.

I don't know about making staff changes, but I would wager it is highly unusual to keep a staff together for, is this the fourth year? I am willing to chalk last year up to a bad roster of no clutch shooters, a young PG, no wing defense, a team whose best player really didn't fit anymore. I think that's more on Howard, than the assistant coaches. This team seems to have more to work with, but it has struggled..again, a lot down the stretch of games. Maybe new blood would be good.

But, I've watched some (not all) of the last 2 games with Howard back in charge, and it seems like a different bench. During game action, nobody appears to be talking to him. He stands about 10 feet away from the bench. I know he's always done that, but if I remember correctly the other assistants would frequently consult with him during game action. I can't say that I've seen the assistants even get up from their seats to interact with the players during game action. That seems contrary to how things used to be, as well. I think the impact of Howard's surgery, the uncertainty of him coming back (being an assistant for a handful of games) and now the incident with Sanderson has really put this team (players and staff) in a vulnerable position. I'm not convinced that Howard's leadership is 100% unquestioned. Personally, I'd like to see him take convalescent leave the rest of the year and let Martelli have a go with this roster. It might not be necessary for his long-term health, but it might be best for the team and for his mental well-being.
