How many times do we need to see this type of flailing by the basketball team at the end of games.

I watched this whole game, been watching since Campy Russell and CJ Cupek and I was screaming at the TV because of how they were coached and played from the end of the 1st OT till the end, truly pathetic.

Unless he has a(nother) embarrassing tantrum and punches a non-Izzo coach* I think Juwan should at least be given a chance to turn the ship around and find something that works by the end of the season, but if the team continues on its current trajectory (which has to be the default expectation given what we’ve seen) I will be okay with a parting of the ways.

* Juwan at 6’-10” wouldn’t be able to reach Izzo with a fist

I didnt watch the game...

looks like so many other games oh well.

But did Juwan punch or aggressively pursue anyone or put his hands on anyone.

Because that's where we are.  Chicago baby.

Can't wait for the next time he does and Warde moves the goal posts from zero tolerance to "Chicago lives in Ann Arbor"

Half of this board wanted Beilein fired

Half of this board wanted Harbaugh fired

Half of this board wanted Bakich fired

Half of you are idiots and shouldn't be allowed to share your thoughts.

this can't be your rationale for never wanting to fire a coach ever again until the end of time. At some point you need to open your eyes and see that the man can't coach. His own son was the least fundamentally sound player on the team! How do you keep losing 50/50 games? Because he can't make the moves at the end of the game to put the team in position to win!

This team definitely has talent, but they do not play as a whole team with talent.  I am not saying this is a top 15 team in the country, but they have the talent to be a better than 500 team.  NIL is definitely a factor that is preventing Michigan getting even more talent, but when Juwan had the 5 stars his teams still struggled.  Michigan isn't even a Blue Blood, but Michigan is too big of a program for Juwan to handle.

Not gonna lie; what college basketball has turned into is just so uninteresting to me. And I’m sure I’d have a different tune if the team were winning, but guys transfer in, guys transfer out, the good recruits are one year and done; it’s just not worth getting invested in anymore.

So honestly I don’t care that much about Juwan and how good a coach he is because he only coaches players for a minute and they’re gone. Hardly anybody grows, nobody develops, and It’s not an excuse or anything, but there’s no continuity or chemistry and not really a “team” and the game is just kinda dumb now.

I want him to be a good dude and get control of his temper but just, whatever man.

Sad part is that football is heading in the same direction and that will kill my soul when it gets there.

Beilein really screwed us over leaving the way that he did.  It was terrible for both UM and for him.

I'm willing to give Juwan a pass since he had never been a head coach and we were more or less forced to take a gamble on him since we were hiring after most coaches had already gotten jobs.

I think that he loves Michigan, and he conceivably could have gotten an NBA job by now.

He had some great recruits but didn't do anything with them.  I think that he got a harsh lesson in the concept of team chemistry.

Give him maybe one more year.  If he misses the tourney next year, he should go.

Yea the timing of JB's departure was killer.  If he left earlier we would had way more qualified candidates available.  I believe Nate Odoms would have been a great candidate had the timing worked out better.  The way it went down it was either Juwan or Ed Cooley.

But I don't see how we can give Juwan one more year if he misses the tourney again this year.  I would not fire him midseason, but I would definitely move on, assuming Warde has a more qualified candidate ready and willing to come here.   (I understand this may be a huge assumption, given Warde's less than stellar history of being proactive).

Just same old, same old as it relates to end of game offense.  Even the possession where we tied it at the end of regulation was a terrible possession.  Just dug dribbling around until he eventually chucks up a prayer with little chance of going in.  We just happened to snag a rebound.  And don't get me started on the Burnett shot at the end of the 1st OT.

End of game defense was a different story.  I actually thought they made some great individual plays and forced really tough shots.  Can't fault them for the ball bouncing out directly to a 3 point shooter at the end of OT.  And those saying you need to foul there...that is not something you do with 20 seconds on the clock.  Less than 10 seconds, ok, let's talk.

For three years (even when they won some games) the team has been slow, poorly coached, bad at the end end of games or critical times...and downright lazy. I know it sounds harsh, but if you look at the game threads from last  year there is comment after comment of the laziness on defense. Two years ago it got to the point the announcers were calling out that the guys were either in horrendous shape or just have no "go" or tenacity in them at all.

All the above are due to coaching. Yes, the guys need to motivate themselves but the team will take on the personality of the coach overall.

I don't think I'd want to fire him yet, but something is way, way off...and it has been for a while.

Burnett blew it at the end of the first ot I think with the 3 point att.  Howard was pissed that Burnett didn't call a timeout.   He went down and tried to play hero ball.   The team is a tournament team with no depth thanks to Michigan not letting transfers or recruits be eligible.   That isn't Juwans fault and whoever is the head coach has to deal with he same stuff.  The whole reason JB left is due to these changes in College ball.

The coach can call timeout. If you're mad at Burnett for not calling TO after receiving the inbounds, you should also be mad at Howard for not doing so before the inbounds. I agree the shot choice was a poor one. Drive to the basket and force the ref to call a foul.

Also, it absolutely is Howard's fault regarding the roster. He didn't learn anything from the TSJ situation and compounded the issue by trying to do the same thing with another academic junior (Caleb Love) who had no path to graduating before coming to Michigan. That process lasted two months before Love decommitted, despite lots of warning signs that he wasn't going to be admitted and maintain class standing.

I've been saying this for a year. I was cautiously optimistic when Howard was hired. He did good with Beilein's recruits, but he can't seem to develop his own players for the college game.

We've done worse YoY. Almost certainly missing the tournament this year in what appears to be a pretty down year for the Big Ten.

I am honestly surprised he survived slapping the Wisconsin coach.

god, it's so hard to discuss this. i sat thru the amaker and ellerbe years, and even beilein's first atrocious year + his mid-career seasons where the team underperformed.

with the former two, we knew their limitations, but it was also because there was a systemic limitation. Ellerbe was here under the specter of an investigation, and Michigan was hamstrung by its shadow when it was clear Ellerbe was far too incompetent to stay. Amaker was the best we possibly could do.

With Juwan, there is absolutely no excuse. Beilein built arguably a top-5 combination of talent, facilities, and institutional support. Juwan was - ugh, I hate to say this - born on third base and has simply not made the most of the opportunity.

When I see Burnett inexplicably pull up for a game winning three with a clear lane to the basket with 2 seconds left and tie ball game on the line....that's some the player's fault, but more to me emblematic of the consistent lack of discipline and coaching in those moments.  We were getting fouled nearly every time we went to the bucket.  On top of that the consistent fouls, turnovers and failure to execute on both ends when it counts have been consistent with Big Nook's tenure.  And now he is seeing a bit of a talent drop off, its even more clear, he is an NBA assistant type, not a college head coach.

Had so many chances to win that game and others all season (and last too).

And then we he called a timeout after being down six (or was it 9?), and game is nearly over, instead of 2 or 3 in double OT, you saw another example of someone who just is still trying to play the game, not coach the team playing the game.  Really poor.

Love the guy as a player, but time to move on from him as a Coach. I think if they finish in the bottom third and they don't make the tournament (again), he's let go then, barring more findings or more drama in the interim.

I actually think firing Harbaugh would have been reasonable in 2020. I am eternally curious about what changed with him that led to such a dramatic turnaround, and how that decision process went for Warde at that time.

I continue to believe there was something personal that changed for Harbaugh...i saw occasional rumors about his home life, some physical injury, i don't know.

but anyway i'm just saying I don't think the calls to fire harbaugh were crazy. he and the team were a mess. he really turned it around and i'm glad he did.

i can't say i expect the same thing out of juwan, but we can hope

Absolutely, i was 50/50 myself on Harbaugh after the 2020 season. Love the man as a coach, same as Howard, and respect their contributions to the program across many decades as a player and coach, but the product on the floor right now is simply unacceptable.  Just like the product on the field in 2020.  If it was any other coach they both would have been fired already, but their pedigree/history buys them each one more season to get their shit together.

I can't really comment because I haven't watched any games this year. but I went to the scrimmage/shootaround before the season started and you could see then that the team was lacking a lot of energy, and man their shooting was terrible, they were missing everything.

of course, coach howard was not even with the team at that time so it's not fair to blame him for that.

but that's one thing about the howard era that has been disappointing, is that martelli and washington aren't doing better. we liked saddi under beilein if i remember right. and martelli had a great career before coming here. i actually expected them to be more positive contributors to a great team.

overall i'm not impressed with the howard era at michigan, but i don't feel like i can really call for his ouster yet - because i don't pay close enough attention. I feel like two sweet 16 appearances and a big ten title in his first four years buys him a little time i guess even if the current situation isn't great.

i'm concerned about recruiting and roster management, team culture and energy, and disappointed the assistants aren't doing better.

i could see this coming to an end over the next couple of years but i think he gets a little more time.

(disclaimer, all this simply ignores the overhang of his .... uh, issues with keeping his hands to himself. that stuff may cost him the job but i'm just ignoring it for now)

I thought it was somewhat laughable that the camera caught Juwan at the end of regulation saying to someone at the coaching area of the bench, "Call a timeout. F*&#!"

Hey that sounds like a HC job to me.

Idk, it sucks but i feel like this is Howard's version of Harbaugh's 2020 season.  Seems like the fanbase is 50/50 to fire him or not, because the product on the court is really unacceptable but he has some decent excuses (health issues, terrible luck with transfers/recruits.)

I believe the consensus on Harbaugh was one more season to get his shit together after the disastrous 2020 season and then win or get fired.   I feel that way about Howard now, his pedigree/resume gets him one more season after this one, but it's time to shit or get off the pot.
