JJ McCarthy will be the best Michigan quarterback since _______?

Cade played against the same two shit teams that JJ did. One excelled and the other regressed. While I feel bad for Cade, he benched himself. McCarthy brings more energy to the team and opportunity for the wide receivers. A guy like Roman Wilson with blazing speed doesn’t have to be worried about outrunning Cades pass. The offense as whole was two clicks faster. The O line didn’t have to pass block for 7 seconds while Cade went through his progressions. Someone said JJ locked on his receivers but I didn’t see that at all, in fact that’s always been Cades issue. If his main target he locked on isn’t open then he checks down leaving us short when defenses load the box. Cades game after a year was getting so easy to game plan that CSU did it pretty well.

No, what I said was that Michigan's offense for years hasn't been high flying letting the QB be the star. It's by design. What I want to see is if jj gets the same play calls against Iowa, psu etc... Or if this was just a result of playing a terrible team.

I think Harbaugh knew the outcome, but didn't want to not let Cade essentially take a victory lap. Cade deserved it, but jj showed why he's passed him... We all assume

Can I ask a dumb question of those who are more football smart than me? First I’ll preface it by saying I’ve never played above like 7th grade and I very much appreciate everything Cade did last year and I fully understand how he feels. That said, I think it’s obvious JJ has different tools and can air it out in a way that Cade cannot. My question is - was Cade always this like this? Or has he just not progressed? I mean he was not a five star recruit, but he was a highly rated four star and was being seriously pursued by the cream of the crop of college football, including Alabama. So, what has happened?

McNamara is competent but limited. Playing with a great running game, good receivers and a strong defense, he put up only average numbers. Because he was the QB on the best Michigan team in a long time, he was given more credit for that success than he deserved, although he certainly and significantly contributed to it. He also benefited from playing in front of fans who’d been recently forced to endure some truly terrible QB play, so he was a breath of fresh air. It’ll be interesting to see where he goes next year, and what kind of success he has.

He’s not a deep threat and he’s not a run threat. He wasn’t either of those last year. What he was last year was an excellent game manager. He didn’t turn the ball over. He didn’t make mistakes.

I think what happened to him this year is he was rattled by not being given the job he felt he already earned. That extra pressure affected him in the first two games.

I'm not as football smart as many here, but it's been clear to me that Cade has appeared to have regressed this season. His main tools have not been strengths for him this season. He has not been overly accurate, he has not made smart decisions with the ball, and he has not avoided pressure this season. He did all of these things well last season.

The pressure of competition and the strain of being the 2021 starter and facing the possibility of being "demoted" has gotten to him. I hope that he can rebuild his confidence, because we will need him, either for his on-field play or for his leadership.

The best Michigan QB ever will always be Brady, of course. But McCarthy may end up as the best Michigan college QB ever. That’s the kind of talent he has. And amazingly, there are still a few who still don’t realize, or won’t admit, that there is no QB competition. Finally, Davis Warren is more talented than McNamara and as the season goes on may become the better backup option. McCarthy will likely be gone to the NFL after next season. I hope Warren sticks around until then.

He'll be the best qb since... McNamara. I know Cade has had an inauspicious start to the 2022 season, but his 2021 season stats were top 10 for a Michigan QB. He was dubbed a game manager but put up better numbers in most categories than Henne, Navarre, or Brady, none of whom were referred to as game managers.

I think McNamara could've been asked to do more last year, but oftentimes he wasn't asked to because he didn't have to. The running game was working so well the coaches had to be asking "why go away from what's working?"

Cade may have only thrown it four times in the second half against OSU, but when they can't stop your run game, why go away from it?

Even I have to pump the brakes a little of what we all saw in last night's performance. In short, it was brilliant BUT, we cannot measure only 2 quarters of this remarkable play to what can or should be done during the course of a full season.

Benchmarks would be to throw for at least 3500 yds. CJ Stroud threw for over 4500 yds last season which is norm in C-Bus. JJ would also have to run for around 500 yds to get within a sniff of what Denard did. There would also need be a TD record thrown by a Michigan QB in a single season.

Safe to say that JJ is off to a great start and I hope he can continue this hot streak. JJ would also have to carry the team on his back and win games or snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in some games (we hope that doesn't happen but let's be real-it does).

Instead of saying JJ will be the best Michigan QB since...I'd say JJ COULD be one of the best Michigan QB since... (TBD)

Not enough data to tell.

Maybe he gets hurt. Maybe he regresses, as many Michigan QBs have.

Or maybe things have clicked. And he has the weapons.

Between his tools, and the roster, and the progress made last year, and not inconsequentially the way college football has changed since the heady days of Grbac and Brady…

He could be, at the college level, the best QB in the history of the program.

Rick Leach as a runner and Chad Henne as a passer. Will wait to start handing out Heisman trophies until he goes into the Shoe and slays the Dragon and the referees

JJ played well against the most sharmin soft, listless team Michigan has faced in years, with negligible pass rush, and he's ready to be crowned as generational?  Yes, the tools are there, but it's all about how he will do vs Iowa, MSU, PSU and OSU, all of whom bring real defenses.

This OP must be under 25 to think performances against JV defenses like yesterday merit vaulting the conversation like this...

JJ was fantastic yesterday but Hawaii is not a good team. I feel terrible for Cade he is not playing to his ability right now so JJ gets the job. Iowa at night is going to be a tough test for JJ. If he curbstomps that defense well then now we’re cooking with gas.

Too early to tell. Ask me after @OSU.

From what we saw yesterday, he has the potential to be the best Michigan QB in the modern era. He can make all the throws accurately and is deadly with his legs.
