Gattis and Locksley rift. I wonder if UM will try to make a statement against Maryland to prove a point?

Submitted by fishgoblue1 on October 31st, 2019 at 7:44 AM

Although reading between the lines of this article, I get the feeling that Ed Warinner may be making more of the play calls at this point.  Seems Gattis has been pushed to the back burner, not made available to speak to the press since Sep 25th.

I doubt the "rift" or whatever it is between Gattis and Locksley will come into play this Saturday.  The team just needs to go out and take care of business.

Yeah this feud between Locksley and Gattis is almost entirely fabricated and played up by the media.

If they don't make nothing into something, they don't get paid.

I'm happy to see the shift to more subscription based news platforms.  It may help the incentive model for news/ media organizations (less pumping out bullshit, more substantive info)

No. Just win the game. There is still a bunch of football left to play for Michigan. 99% of it is probably fake news anyways.

Actually by criticizing a crappy hot take, he is doing exactly what the first amendment intends. The first amendment doesn’t mean we have to respect people’s stupid opinions, it means that everyone can say what they want (to a limit) without government interference and other people can respond, agree, disagree, ignore, or ridicule. Kind of like you just did and I just did. Nice try there snowflake.

For anyone here questioning if Harbaugh would try to win with cruelty, I really feel like you haven’t been paying attention.

We made sure to get both Wangler and Poggi a TD vs Maryland. We put it on their face in Durkin’s first year there including Speight going Jumpman. We put it on Frost’s face (again) in his first shot at us with Nebraska. He oversaw a revenge tour. We converted a fake XP for 2 in the first half of our 78-0 game at Rutgers. We threw late against Notre Dame last week.

Some of this is just that we couldn’t help but score, yes. But I don’t think we felt sorry. Never feel sorry for anybody.

and by the way speaking of Maryland.  I have not followed - what happened to their offense?  The team that beat the Longhorns?

EDIT: I know what happened in the larger sphere, this fall was supposed to be different

Maryland points scored in wins: 79, 63, 48 (Howard, Syracuse, Rutgers)

Average score in 3 wins: 63-9

Maryland points scored in losses:  17, 0, 14, 28, 10 (teams with a pulse)

Average score in 5 losses: 14-41

I'm thinking Maryland is going to have a tough time Saturday and it won't be because of the manufactured "Gattis-Locksley" drama

I'd like to see Michigan beat Maryland so badly that their AD considers firing the head coach.

Then I'd like to see Michigan beat Michigan State so badly that whoever's in charge in the MSU athletic department immediately tells Mork that he won't be around for his bonus in January.

Then I'd like to see Michigan beat Indiana so badly that they despair of ever reaching double digits in wins against us (58-9 all time record).

Then I'd like to see Michigan beat OSU so badly that half of their 2020 class decommits out of shame and Mattison weeps inconsolably for the next week.

The statement is already being made as we're 6-2 and Maryland is 3-5. We will continue making that same statement through the end of the game at which point the statement will be we're 7-2 and you're 3-6.

This whole rift thing is a made up fairy tale.  Locksley did nothing more than blurt something out that he was the OC because Gattis was getting all the media love.  It was a 'hey, I'm here too!' moment of jealousy from a guy with a history of gaining attention for the wrong things.  Gattis (nor Michigan) never responded.  Fake news all around.

And for all you sissies that think Michigan will have a letdown, I ask how many games like this has Harbaugh ever lost.  (Pro tip: Not a single one at Michigan...)

The team is finally playing like a team and the talent is showing.  We are better than Maryland and if the guys keep building on their recent uptick in play, it will be a comfortable win.  And that's all I am looking for -- just a good old-fashioned "we're much better than you" easy win.  We still have MSU and IU before the big test.

I'm going to go with the people saying this is a made up story by the media, I do however think UM coaches need to call this game with pedal to the metal because this is a classic letdown type of game.

Josh Gattis doesn’t work in a vacuum, nor should he: it would be stupid for him to ignore the input of an assistant coach whose unit is crucial to anything Gattis wants to do. However, there isn’t any verifiable evidence that Harbaugh or Warriner or anybody else has grabbed responsibilities from Gattis.

His “Speed in space” hype gave the impression that Gattis doesn’t value the running game, but the offenses he was involved with at PSU and Alabama were balanced attacks with powerful ground games, not passing spreads that treat running the ball as an afterthought.

Suffice to say, your implication that Gattis isn't calling plays anymore is a bit suspect at best. Where is the basis to say that, Gattis, who is now on the field will a playsheet in hand and verbally yelling instruction is no longer calling plays?

Michigan is going to crush Maryland, beat the snot out of MSU, win convincingly against Indiana (though by less, say 10-14), and then roll into the OSU game hungry and ready to roll. It's like 1969 again.

From https://gbmwolverine.com/2014/05/21/m-osu-rivalry-game/:

The Wolverine players totally bought in after crushing Iowa 51-6, seven days before the showdown.” BEAT THE BUCKS! BEAT THE BUCKS,” chanted the Wolverines.

“Look at this!” (Bo) screamed to (assistant coach) Jerry Hanlon over the raucous noise. That bleeping Ohio State better be good—or we’ll kill them.”

This, exactly.  I could not give a crap about some probably non-existent feud between our OC and their HC.  I want to dominate Maryland because we need to continue building confidence every single game between now and OSU.  This OSU team looks as good as any I have seen - to win, we are going to have to go into that game with all the confidence in the world.

At the same time, a good coach and motivator is going to find a narrative to supply his team with every time. No game is "just another game." Every game is meaningful, and you find a story about why. "Why do we care extra today?"

"I heard their coach owns stock in Pfizer, the cost of my blood sugar medication just tripled! That pisses me off! Let's take it to them!"

The framing of this story, and the aspect that is supposd to be worrisome to Michigan fans, is that any success Gattis had at Bama was actually due to Locksley.  To give an appearance of fairness, the writer included a quote from their former boss Saban that said nothing at all.  Everybody had input, and worked well together, and kumbaya.   (Saban is a master of supplying word salad quotes for the media that don't mean anything.  Or he has a communications staffer to write it for him. Either way).

Anyway, again, nonstory.  Someone was looking at a deadline and came up with this.  Even if there is truth to the writer's thesis, it's no longer relevant given the context.  Michigan's offense is improving, MD apparently not so much).

Anyone who watched the game knows Warinner is not calling the plays.  Most of the time he is seen on the sidelines standing behind JH and JG.  Total Crap.

This article ain't all that dramatic.  it plays on the Gattis-Locksley thing which we should all expect. Big deal!

It will be nice to see us smoke Maryland though whether with or without Gattis calling the plays.

Jim hasn't "taken over" the play calling.  He's shown Gattis some things that will work IN CONJUNTION with what Gattis is trying to do.  They are starting to put a defense in conflict.  That's how Ohio State has operated so successfully.  Equate the numbers, as Urban says.  Jim and Ed are helping a young first-timer equate the numbers in the Big 10.

It is quite the stretch to say Warriner is calling plays instead of Gattis.  That would be an odd move considering Gattis has been the guy through spring and fall camps and the first half of the season.

If M gets up big like ND.  Run offense like your down 21 with backups. Sorry, never make a team feel good about itself (Illinois, Army). You get your opponent down and reeling you keep pressure on offense and defense. You let them know who the alpha dog is. That is what OSU did to M last year and that hangover lasted until PSU. Never give your opponent reason for hope. Competition is exactly that. You compete for 60 minutes like your down 21 points.  The East division is brutal enough, keep your edge. Don’t give anyone any moral victories or reasons to feel good about themselves. Look what Illinois did to WI.

I truly hope both teams have an injury free game. After that, keep foot on pedal

WTF?!

How about we just make a statement about the state of the UM football program, rather than getting into a pissing match with someone who has no bearing on the course or direction our ship is going.

Ed Warriner isn’t calling plays. That would be an unmitigated disaster against a good defense. Ed is an OL coach who has no business running an offense. The guy was fired by Urban at baggage claim after Clemson waxed OSU.

The real battle took place @Penn State. Ricky Rhane and Gattis coached under Franklin for 6 years.

We should beat teams like this 63-0 and frankly we could do that with Pep Hamilton. Maryland sucks.

I’m worried we come out a little flat after a prime time win. It’ll be underwhelming and sleepy at noon in Maryland.
