Does Howards’s behavior begin to become a problem?

Submitted by The Mayor on December 22nd, 2022 at 1:21 PM

I know many of you don’t follow twitter so I’m sorry in advance. I’m sure many have seen this but I just wonder how long can Howard act unhinged and survive after last year? He clearly has trouble handling his emotions and when Bufkin pulls him back and around his shoulder hits KB’s chin and clearly says get the F off me or some variation. I have been a 100% supporter of Juwan, my profile pic will prove it. However, after last year how much wiggle room is left? Especially with the team kind of underperforming does Warde take a look? Probably not with his track record of letting things go. What say you all?

This board has a history of looking for reasons to fire coaches the minute something goes wrong. It happened with Harbaugh, Beilein, Bakich etc. Learn from past mistakes and give a coach some time before freaking out. If there is another Wisconsin incident it may warrant action but this isn't it. Knee jerk reactions without a ton of data will get you a $95 mil Mel Tucker situation.

I think Izzo looks foolish when he loses control. I think Howard does too.

MSU fans don't look to have Izzo fired for it. I've never seen anyone here say he should be fired (for that--covering up for sex offenders, yes), just that he looks like a stupid elf.

Apparently a lot of Michigan fans think Howard should be fired for it though.

Is anyone confident he’s *not* going to have another incident like he had against Wisconsin last year?

Basketball has been a disappointment. I think Warde will ride out Juwan until he gets a gig in the NBA and leaves Michigan.  I am guessing that will be another 1-3 years at max.

I don't give a shit whether he's a testy S.O.B. or not, all I care about is the product on the court. And if there's any reason for Michigan to reconsider it'd be on those grounds.

What we have learned so far is that the change from the Beilein system concept to a more high-end recruiting oriented approach has not yielded an improvement in outcomes.

The team and Bufkin are what to watch here.  If the players are in a bad situation with Howard it could play out badly from here.  I don't think he is Bobby Knight but he is not Beilein either.  He is a very good bball coach but if he has problems controlling his temper and continues physically acting out Warde and the regents should take steps to ensure the program stays on the right track.  The loose end that concerns me at this point is the venom Collins brought to the game earlier this year against us.  Beilein's ability to develop players was special and I cherish the teams he had that went 9-9 in conference play for a few years and turned the program around by overachieving and sheer grit.  Winning stuff is fun but the point of sports is playing and trying to win fairly and with integrity.  I think Juwan can do this and I hope Jalen and his peers help him with this going forward.

Collins was jacked up for sure. Maybe some words were exchanged privately on his way out. He actually had perhaps his worst game of the year vs. us. He had 4 fouls and only 4 points. He's pretty much been a 10 pt 5asst guy all year, something Llewellyn was clearly not. Maybe this is one of those portal calls that JH decides to avoid next year. Develop your own guy vs. shopping for an import.

It's still early. JB has a few teams that didn't light it up early. 2013-14 was 6-4, with a few close losses to ranked teams in Dec. They ended up in the Elite 8, losing to UK on a 3 pt at the buzzer.

We've really had our chances to beat either UVA or UK or UNC. Hoping Dug steps it up in a year he wasn't expected to make a big difference. Go blue!

Well considering I've got buckeye friends who keep bringing it up, I'd say it's a problem for me now. I'm fine with a coach who gets fired up and yells occasionally, but when the players have to hold him back he's got a problem. It's embarrassing for me that shit like this keeps happening. At least he didn't hit anyone this time I guess.

Howard didn't do anything wrong.  It's normal for coaches to get heated - even Beilein.  The angry elf in Lansing acts like a raving lunatic probably at least once a game.  I only worry because of the prior incident.  I love Juwan as a coach and would hate for anything to happen again and cost him his job at Michigan.  Even a minor incident might get blown out of proportion at this point.

Personally I'm more concerned about the lack of player development.  Maybe that's just me?

Bufkin has improved. The bigs have definitely improved their footwork and post moves under Howard.

Elsewhere, I really havent seen a ton of player development since Beilein left.  Although maybe that's an unfair standard because Beilien was an elite coach who took lesser known recruits and consistently developed them and maximized their talent throughout their college careers.  I'm just not seeing the same player development under Howard.

Juwan has tried the 1-and-done route, which JB pretty much avoided, and it burned us this year. We lost Livers (a JB guy) who helped provide some stability. Plus the two FR who did get drafted but haven't made big waves this season in the NBA and could have benefited from another year. The question for the next season is how many minutes leave the roster, either through transfers or going pro.

The guy has a covid year, where we would have been a 7/8 seed. The Elite 8 year, mostly with JB guys, and Sweet 16, with HD (JH's guy) and Livers plus the two FR.

I don't mind a fiery coach. Not sure exactly what ran up before this play, but both sides said it was a chippy game, and the general consensus is we were playing against both UNC and the refs.

Let's see where this team is around March 1st and if they are ready for another run, or for an NIT. I have no freaking idea what to expect but feel, even if this year ends up short of the NCAA, you don't make changes this early. Let's see what he does closing out 2023 recruiting.

We're definitely not the hunted like we were at the beginning of last year.

Coach Howard is a liability to the team and the school's reputation.  As a coach, he is a leader of men and is failing his team in that respect.  It's another bad look for the University and it's getting very exhausting having to defend this guy all of the time.

If he shrinks two feet, dresses as an elf, exhibits this behavior for 25 more years and abuses his own players then that will be a concern and we will lose him to Lansing. This keeps me up at night.

I don’t watch basketball so I’m not familiar with JH’s behavior, but I didn’t think this clip looked that bad. I wouldn’t call that being restrained, someone stepped in to disrupt his ranting (or whatever), they didn’t hold him back.  He didn’t seem out of control, just pissed about whatever it was.

I’m still embarrassed that he hit someone though. I don’t really mind how it was handled by the university, but it’s embarrassing when a Michigan coach does something stupid like that at an event.

I think the pressure is getting to JH. This is a very difficult job to identify talent and recruit kids. Also difficult to establish an identity and develop towards that. I've heard him say over and over he wants to play 'positionless' basketball. Because that's the NBA style. Only problem is he's doing it with a 1980s NBA style center. I realize he's our best player, but the 5 spot is probably the most important for positionless basketball. My point is he still doesn't have an identity besides throwing 5 guys on the floor and letting them play. And with only 1 workable point guard to boot.

Being a Head Coach at a school like Michigan is a huge challenge, and here we are doing it with a guy who has zero experience.  Time will tell. My gut feeling is he done when his kids are done at Michigan.

1. I don’t enjoy watching Juwan’s teams play as much as I did John’s.  More consistent play would help. We have been watching more  of our Woman’s team.

2.  I love Juwan as a alumnus, player and coach.        I so badly want to see him settle into and grow as Michigan’s head coach.

3. I could do without “hot temper” drama, real or imagined.

I think he'll be a better pro coach than college. I think he'll leave not long after his kids do. I think his behavior will only be a problem if he aggressively caresses another coach's face again. I have little faith our next coaching hire will be a good one. I don't know how any college coach stays sane in todays nil/portal/early nba entry era. Can we steal Matt Painter?

Personally, I believe it is an issue. Juwan should really get help with his emotions. He is a coach and mentor he has to be held to a higher standard, by himself and the University. It's only a matter of time before he goes Woody Hayes on someone, again. The excuse that he is a competitor, other coaches do it is simply an excuse that isn't helpful.

It still seems crazy to me to compare Howard to Beilein. I mean ... Beilein left. He left. He wasn't fired so that we could hire Howard. And we should be really careful about assuming that we could upgrade from Howard easily if we moved on from him.

All those recruits we've been getting? Diabate, Jett Howard, etc.? We weren't getting them under Beilein, and I like how quickly we assume whoever replaces Howard would keep that pipeline going. Remember the kind of players we got under Tommy Amaker and Brian Ellerbe?

I'm not delighted with this year's results either. But damn, we were the only Big Ten team to get to the Sweet Sixteen last year, and the year before we're one Fritz Wagner airball away from getting to the Final Four (despite missing our best player). Iowa lost at home two nights ago to a 30+ point underdog. Disappointing results are part of the deal.

Fuck we're a fickle fanbase.

That wasn’t the point of the post. I assure you. I support Juwan. I just want him to tone it down. I do disagree that Beilein wasn’t getting those types of recruits. The Mitch McGary, GR3’s were coming. The difference was he was developing the Trey Burkes and Caris Leverts. I  think Juwan has done a great job at developing the big men and hopefully the guards get better.

Oh, I actually approve of the post -- I was responding to some of the other comments.

I'm also surprised how many commenters seem to be (willfully?) misunderstanding you as referring to simple emotional outbursts on the court, rather than the kind of situation he found himself in last night, needing to be restrained by his own players (and reacting badly to that).

In any event, I'm with you. I'm a big fan, and a big supporter, but I do worry that these kinds of outbursts suggest that something worse is inevitable.

As for the Mitch McGary and GR3, that was one class, no? Certainly his last 2-3 classes didn't have any five stars. He was the best -- in my opinion, the best -- at recognizing and developing diamonds in the rough, like Stauskas, Muhammas-Ali Abdur-Rahkman, and Mo Wagner, but he was never competing with the Kentuckys and Dukes (or even the MSUs) for generally acknowledged five stars out of high school.

I think Juwan has actually changed that.

(We can disagree about this, of course -- that's just been my sense over the years).

The Mayor

December 22nd, 2022 at 6:56 PM ^

Man that was the same class wasn’t it? You are  completely right about the development of diamonds in the rough. Just from a shooting perspective think about how far some of those guys came like Walton and Mo and even Simpson. The offense just seems to be so erratic nowadays under Juwan. I actually have been recording the games and watching so I can ffwd through the rough stretches because each game has those times where they go 6 minutes without a basket and it drives me nuts!

The racism exhibited in this post, as well as the mass media, against Juwan Howard and the rest of the Fab Five goes back to the beginning of their popularity.  Just quit applying a BS double standard.  Do you not remember the years and years of tolerated outbursts by Bobby Knight, Underwood, McCaffrey, Izzo, etc.?  Talk about needing anger management courses, all these white guys repeatedly went out of control and nobody harped on it as much as they do Juwan. Funny, nobody said Juwan had an anger problem during his 25 years in the NBA as a player and coach.  Now, when he is proving the benefits of hiring black NBA players/coaches into college head coaching positions, the ingrained racism of some observers holds him to a higher standard than media-popular white coaches.
