While I don't like what he said about Harbaugh et al following the transfer, I don't think his comments in this situation are all that bad. Here is the plain language:

“I mean, I’m just a quarterback. I’m not calling the plays or doing any of that. That’s not my decision. I’m just going to run the play, and I’m going to throw it to the open guy,” McNamara said, deferring any explanation to his embattled offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz.

That is a completely fair thing to say to media. He's a twenty-year old kid who is out there playing quarterback and making reads, which is far different than calling plays. He shouldn't have to take the responsibility for the WRs not being involved.

I wonder what "evidence" the Iowa powers-that-be require to decide that this simply ain't working. Ferentz is where promising offensive talent goes to die a horrible, slow death.  Resolved that Cade is not JJ; he's damn sure not the worst quarterback in the B10.  Not Cade's greatest moment, perhaps, but he's obviously (and understandably) frustrated.

I don't think he's throwing Brian Ferentz under the bus.  He's being asked why the offense is being run a certain way and he is deferring to the person in charge of the offense.  The fact that Brian Ferentz doesn't appear capable of running an offense is what makes it look bad.

Why Cade thought Iowa was a good landing spot is beyond me.  Hopefully he got some MIL money.   It would have been great if Cade and All went to Charlotte so all of the former players I'm invested in are in one place.

This reads like a QB who is confirming that he's just running the plays that his coaches call in from the sidelines. His answer is honest, accurate, and direct.

That offense is not really a Cade issue. And. The primary guy under that bus is named Ferentz.

To your last point, I’m wondering how lifeless MSU will actually be.  I hate to give them credit but they actually tried against Maryland.  After Maryland got up 21-3, they looked like a clown show the rest of the game.

I may be a glutton for punishment but I’ll probably watch their game against Iowa.

I’m nominally a fan of Iowa - I like their fans, I like their traditions, and I envy their zen lol.

And I’m going to make this point in the Week 6 Iowatch!, but this season and last season don’t make a ton of sense from an Iowa offense perspective.

Brian Ferentz has been OC for the last six seasons, and Iowa’s offense only took a nosedive last year. He’s a former OL himself. It doesn’t take a lot of offense to win a lot of games at Iowa.

Also…just from a CYA perspective… “blaming a coordinator for the team’s woes” is a strategy that a head coach usually gets to use ONCE. RichRod used his on DC. Hoke used his on OC. You could argue that Harbaugh - who has operated more intelligently than either of his predecessors - has used his on DC once and OC TWICE! Now, most head coaches aren’t Kirk Ferentz level of untouchable, but you gotta imagine that he’s not terribly interested in demonizing his son.

Also a secondary Iowa fan who goes with a friend to one game in Iowa City per year. A few years ago, Iowa rolled up a lot of points on Sparty. Their offense, though not great in 2021, wasn't anywhere near as bad as the last two years. My friend says that KF is very loyal to his assistants. Years ago, people were complaining about Kent O'Keefe as OC. He hung around for a few more years before going to the Dolphins for a few years and then returning later now as QB coach. The belief is that KF knows the coaches's families and doesn't want to let people go. Obviously, it's really bad now with BF. Every Iowa fan knows KF is trying to hold on long enough to hand down the job to BF.

One thing I've heard from Iowa fans is that they believe losing Doyle, their long-time S&C coach after allegations of racism and excessive conditioning demands, has gradually weakened Iowa's strength, especially on the O Line, where they always had an edge. Doyle left before the 2020 season. The guy had to go, given the number of people who complained - they also complained about BF too but daddy threw Doyle under the bus to save his son.

I'll never begrudge Cade for leaving. He wanted playing time, he wanted to start, believed he was good enough to, and 2021 convinced us that he was. He owed it to himself to go somewhere where he could keep playing.

But choosing Iowa? After the offense they put on the field last year? I can't imagine Iowa was his only suitor.

Cade is a grown man who can make his own decisions, but it just kind of seemed like he sabotaged himself by choosing to go there. Ferentz isn't exactly known for being willing to adapt to the times and do what's necessary to score points and win ballgames.

I honestly would've rather gone to a top G5 school that would let me sling the ball around, or at least better showcase my skills so I have a chance to make it to the league. If Cade ever had any hopes of making it to the NFL, those chances died the minute he signed away a year of his life to Kirk and Brian Ferentz.

I get that there's a lot of feelings around Cade, his exit, and what happened while he was at UM, but saying he threw his OC under the bus is reaching. I think it's more an honest deflection given that he just got his ass kicked by a good PSU team, he sees the shortcomings of his team, and he was asked a leading question by someone who wanted a story.

I like Cade as well. He led one of the most important Michigan seasons in twenty years. I know his exit was meh, but he brought Michigan back as the QB in a big way. Consider me a fan.

I appreciate everything Cade did for Michigan. That was a very special year, and we slayed the stupid giant, will never forget it.

BUT..... all the news coming out after makes me think different about the type of guy he is, which is unfortunate.  Now we have this call out, which I can understand since Ferentz is terrible, but the way he approaches these things are not a good look for him.

Hope he beats sparty, hope he has a solid year, and hope learns and grows from some of this as well.

Maybe Brian Ferentz knows that cade has a penchant for checking down even when there are open receivers downfield. Maybe Ferentz knows that cades arm strength is a weakness. Maybe cade simply isn’t throwing it downfield.

they mentioned during the broadcast that cade doesn’t have to compete with JJ or public perception anymore and to just play his game. I took that as cade doesn’t have to throw downfield because that’s not his strength

Cade is 100% correct is didn't specifically callout Brian Ferentz.

Also, Iowa isn't paying Kirk ~$40M to go away and Kirk isn't firing his son. They will be trash for the next 5-6 years.

Like many others I'll always appreciate what Cade did for us and I also acknowledge that I can't believe they have not chased Brian Ferentz out of Iowa city yet. With that said though has anybody watched their games. Cade's ball just seems to float coming out of his hand and he's not the most mobile guy. Anybody thinking that he could have picked to play at a bunch of better schools than Iowa is kidding themselves. Cade is an intelligent guy who is pretty accurate but a far cry from an elite quarterback who would have schools tripping over themselves to get..

Am I missing something? I read the article and he basically just deferred the fact that playcalls and personelle is the coach's decision. Didn't seem all to controversial to me? If I am him, I am probably saying the same thing...

Yeah, I know there's a subset of the population here dying to crucify him for everything but this felt really benign.  He's not going to say "yeah, we should be throwing to player X more" because that would be equally undermining his coach in public.  He actually answered the question instead of giving a pat answer.

I didn't read this as an under the bus act. Maybe he could have taken more personal ownership about HIS role - perhaps saying things like "I missed a few open reads too" or even "we're still blending together as an offense" or whatever.

Clearly, the guy has extreme confidence in himself that borders on the arrogance and sometimes pettiness that we have seen since his injury last year. I still root for him to win. Every time I watch the 2021 Ohio game, I recognized that he played a pretty solid game. One terrible read on the goal line pick when Edwards was open on his right, but the long bomb to CJ down to the 1 set up the go-ahead score.

Iowa's O took a big step back in 2022, but losing Charlie Jones to Purdue didn't help matters.

Cade wasn't throwing Brian Ferentz "under the bus". He stated what we know is true - he doesn't call the plays, design the offense, etc.

He just isn't as deferential as other Iowa QBs had been in the past. They would come to press conferences and as the leader of the offense shoulder the blame and tell everyone how much more they have to work and try to get everyone etc. etc.

This was also noted by long term Iowa fansites. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwM1bQvO504

They all know the issue is with the Ferentz pere and fils insisting on a whole approach to football that seems to ignore the changes in college football offenses.

After seeing Charlie Jones (aka Chuck Sizzle) blossom as a NFL draftable WR when he left Iowa for Purdue, it is surprising any one who plays receiver wanting to play at Iowa under this regime.

Whatever.

"I knew I could trust [Budmayr]," McNamara said. "The more and more I did research, the more it felt like a perfect fit. I think I've seen the potential. I've played Iowa before. I think I know what the brand means. Just looking at the pieces we do have here already, it's huge."

K. Grass is always greener. blah blah

No sympathy for him or that lame duck offense. We aren't perfect, and I'm not mad at him for leaving, but he acted like a jackass along the way and on his way out and we're good without him.

Considering Brian Ferentz hasn't been held remotely accountable for his utterly terrible offenses for years now, yeah it's probably time to stop asking the players why it sucks because they keep changing and he remains the same.

Could McNamara have answered it better?  Sure, but Ferentz isn't the one getting crunched by Chop Robinson because Iowa doesn't have a left tackle worth a damn or is playing an OSU transfer at WR about 8 snaps a game

Let’s get this straight it’s the totally Brian Ferentz’s fault that the receivers have only 14 catches on 35 targets? Cade’s putting his 40% completion rate to wideouts on play calling?
