Assuming Moore is the next HC (and Minter and JayBaugh go with Jim)...how would you build the staff?

Submitted by MaizeBlueA2 on January 24th, 2024 at 7:26 PM

Nothing is confirmed, but obviously all signs point to Sherrone Moore being named the next head coach at Michigan.

If the rumors of Minter going with Harbaugh are true (again, absolutely nothing confirmed, and hopefully Michigan puts up a salary and title that makes it VERY tough)...and assuming Jay Harbaugh goes with his dad, but everyone else (including Ben Herbert) says...

...how would YOU like to see Moore fill out the rest of the staff?

  • Do you think Moore should remain OC and calling plays?
  • Does Newsome move to OL?
  • What assistant coaches would you like to see added? (sorry, Partridge is not eligible to work at Michigan again)
  • Should Moore add someone with HC experience to his staff?
  • What would you like to see happen with the DC spot if Minter is indeed headed to LA?
  • Do you hire someone from Ravens tree again?

He's not going to give them a 1:1 exchange. But if there was an off field coach or position coach clearly ready for a coordinator position, he'd encourage them to take it to progress their careers. Part of building a culture of excellence is giving people their shot. If he can't, he will encourage it elsewhere. However, this takes 2-3 years too. John Harbaugh has this luxury because he's been at Baltimore and successful almost every year his entire duration. He's had institutional continuity which helps him acquire and let go of good talent.

Newsome to OL

Find an offensive coordinator who is a creative playcaller and a developer of QBs.

Find a proven DC familiar with the Ravens scheme. Moore needs at least one proven coordinator.

Moore needs to hire an AHC with HC experience.

Chris Creighton as OC and someone for Sherrone to lean on as a former HC

Grant Newsome to OL

Sherrone Moore as HC and TE coach

Hart/Bellamy/Campbell stay as RB, WR, QB coaches

Ryan Osborn from Charlotte as LB coach (or Steve Morrison from BGSU as LB coach)

If there isn’t another Ravens trained coach to be DC, give it to Clink.

Go outside for a DB replacement or S/T coordinator. Especially if they can recruit.  Or promote from within like with Kirk Campbell.

Bring an OC that can balance the offense and open it up. Throwing the ball 200yds a game will be hard to attract elite QBs. Find an aggressive DC like Minter . Make Mike Hart Co-OC so he can stay around.

I think it’s hard to know who Sherrone Moore has connections to but just thinking through guys with Michigan connections and assuming Minter and Jay Harbaugh are gone.

QB/OC-Kirk Campbell

RB-Hart

WR-Bellamy

OL-Newsome

TE-Nick Sheridan or Kevin Koger

DC-Jim Leonhard

DL-Elston

LB-Roy Manning or Mike McCray

Co-DC/Corners-Clinkscale

S-Doug Mallory

Someone is going to need to be special teams coach as well.  Obviously Sherrone also has his own network and the Ravens may still be willing to send someone our way.

He probably wouldn’t come but I’d try throwing a lot of money at the new DC at USC who also comes from the Ravens tree.

Another alternative that won’t happen is shift Bellamy back to safeties and bring in Brennan Marion as WR/OC from UNLV.

To be honest, as a fan I don't feel like I have enough information to answer any of these questions.  Besides saying, "that position coach's group did well, so he must be a good coach," I have no clue who the right people to fill these holes are, or who among the current staff deserves to be promoted.  I have failed as an anonymous MGoBlog commenter.

Here’s what I propose:

First thing I do is try to keep Herbert around. Second thing I do is call Brian Griese and offer him the OC job. I entrust Elston and Clinkscale with the DC or try to call John and ask who’s the upcoming rental DC they want developed.

I'd like to kick the tires on Jay as a coordinator. He seems ready to take another step up, he's been good at every position he's coached.

Because he's one of the best ACs Harbaugh had in his 9 years.

But all anyone said about him was he was leaving, and thus, who would you replace him with.

Remind me why you're taking shots at one of the best recruiters, identifiers of talent, and player developers we've had at Michigan.

Next year when Colston Loveland catches a pass, remember who got him to Michigan.

He got Keon Sabb from "raw, he's going to need a few years" as a freshman to starting in the National Championship Game. WTF are you even talking about?

I do not think Moore should continue calling plays, he’ll have enough on his plate learning to run an entire program.

I would promote Kirk Campbell and Hart to co-OC roles, Campbell having prior OC experience. Slide Newsome to OL and hire a TE coach.

I would hire a DC, as I think a rookie head coach with an offensive background probably is best served to have an experienced DC. A 3-4 defense is the closest you’ll get to our current personnel and allows you to blend concepts with what we currently run. Jim Leonhard should get strong consideration imo. He would also be able to fill the safeties coach role left vacant by JayBaugh if need be.

I think the Ravens pipeline goes to the wayside with Jim leaving. There’s very little incentive for John to recommend an up and coming coach to Michigan now.

I’m not really in tune with who would be good hires for the open TE, LB, and Safety/Special Teams spots. Mike McCray is a linebacker coach for UMass, that’s about the only former player off the top of my head. Ryan Osborn was a top analyst here and followed Poggi to Charlotte where he’s the DC and LB coach, but idk if that’s a switch he’d make

I haven't put a ton of thought into it but my unrealistic dream scenario would be something like.

Newsome to OL

Re-Hire Patridge to replace Jaybaugh at Special Teams Coordinator/Safeties.

Promote Clinksdale to Assistant HC/CB with pay bump.

Back up Brinks truck to Larry Foote for LB/DC role.

Joe Moorehead for OC?

BleedThatBlue

HC - Sherrone Moore

OC- Mike Hart/kirk Campbell

Oline - Grant Newsome

DC- Minter (he’s out and going with JH, this was discussed in his interview) I guess outside hire? Maybe a mixture of clink/elston?

Corners/safeties- Clink

This isn’t successful without the full administration backing this team and especially with fucking NIL. All irrelevant if they do not do anything with NIL.

Michigan needs to get ruthless and put clink at dc then get the former ohio state safeties coach and bleed him for information like they did with mattison and big al.

put hart at oc/rbs, nrewsome at ol, put bellamy as analyst, bring back partridge for lbs and st, get elite wr coach, dual option qb coach and then go out it on the buckeyes again

Newsome to OL coach. I’d move Clink to DC, he had to have learned a ton these last two years under Minter. Need a new defensive backs coach and linebackers coach, since Partridge got booted. As fas as OC, I’d move up Campbell and give Hart a raise and additional title. Bellamy would be on the hot seat, he hasn’t recruited very well and the cupboard is pretty bare for next year. I’d tell him to hit the portal and the 25 class better have some weapons or else. Then replace Jay with someone as well.

BleedThatBlue

January 24th, 2024 at 9:19 PM ^

Bellamy is unproven. You can’t expect a guy be an ace recruiter and have a stud WR when you have one hand tied behind your back with the offense UM ran. Not saying he’s good or bad but running an offense with a highly sought after position in todays game is hard to garner attention in this run first offense

4th phase

January 24th, 2024 at 9:05 PM ^

HC - Moore

CoOCs - Campbell QBs / Hart RBs

DC - Clink

WR - Bellamy

OL - Newsome

DL - Elston

LB - Ryan Osborn

S maybe someone from Purdue who learned from Walters?

TE maybe Joe Cox who was TE coach at Alabama under Saban and I don't think was retained.

It's going to be Moore so no need to assume.

Minter is 98% gone but that was always the case.

Sounds like Herber is following Jim. Jay is almost as certain to follow.

As I stated a couple days after the NCG, be prepared for a radically different team next year. It's a gut punch to finally see verified but I'm not really bummed or surprised. I expected this so it's just a slight gut punch of the unknown.

DC - If you promote Clink you need a DB coach. If you don't promote Clink you likely need a DB coach.

S&C - no clue. None. Zero. Some Herbert underling if not Herbert?

Moore to HC and Jay leaving means you have a few gaps to fill there depending on what kind of HC he wants to be regarding how hands-on he is.

The game itself is changing in 2024 and our program will also be very different. It's a different game now so UM will also have to change by force and adapt.

uminks

January 24th, 2024 at 9:36 PM ^

No, Moore will need a OC. I'd like Michigan to offer the LB or DB coach for the Raven's as our new DC. We have to keep the Raven's D going here. Minter knew the Raven's D but once he got to Michigan he became great.

I think there are plenty of coaches that are from the UM tree and aren’t, that will come out of the woodwork for spots on the staff. I do like Griese coming home and being co oc with Hart.
