Am I alone in having canceled a subscription over the so called reporting the past 2 weeks?
My first post (versus comment) apologies if I did anything wrong, but am I the only one to have canceled any national sports subscriptions over this crap? I just canceled The Athletic and I gotta say it felt really good. My email inbox does not need to be raising my blood pressure this much with lousy journalism.

Normally I would say not to take journalists clickbait to heart. They gotta eat, and this has been a free buffet for nearly the past two weeks for them. Except lately a lot of the "journalists" covering this have been sourcing their updates straight from Reddit it seems. It's starting to give "Hey I'm Tim Pool and I'm going to react to a twitter post made by someone I disagree with" school of journalism.

I cancelled my Washington post subscription as a result. I'd been reading it less and less, anyway. This whole story has really exposed how bad things have gotten in journalism. It's troubling.

Same here.

I haven't gone that far--my from NoVA husband who doesn't even like football would flip anyway--but was it more than the one article? Have they continued on? I don't read them much anyway.

Stewart Mandel is trash. I would cancel if I had a subscription. I'm surprised the Athletic is fine with him trolling twitter. It without a doubt harms the credibility of the entire site
The other day he tried to claim 2020s poor performance was because Stalions couldn't attend games. I expect comments like that from OSU fans, not editor in chief of a major sports site
These guys know casual fans will believe whatever they say so they lie to push the narrative they want.

Okay.

I never subscribed to that trash. Glad to hear you have now canceled!

Not the only one. If you are on social media, I'd encourage to do the same. I unfollowed several ESPN sites.

I ended up here because I stopped giving Elon my money a while ago anyway. When you live outside of Michigan or are older so the alumni clubs are all full of just out of school aged people, it sucks not having anyone to chat Michigan sports with. It was my only concern about leaving Twitter and so I came here. And only one person pissed me off by calling a player trash so definitely an improvement anyway.

You are almost certainly not the only one to do so.
November 5th, 2023 at 7:29 AM ^
I didn't realize I was still paying for it so I cancelled a while ago. I honestly didn't find the writing particularly interesting or worth the cost. Like, I pay for this site because I like the content and learn from it and I'm not going to pay NYT a bunch of money a year to justify overpaying for a bunch of mediocre beat writers and Stewart Mandel being an asshole.

You “fixed the glitch”
November 5th, 2023 at 7:56 AM ^
I canceled the Athletic.
November 5th, 2023 at 8:07 AM ^
Nope I canceled the athletic as well.

I don't pay for news.
I don't read news, other than headlines, and then if I have any interest I will look at it.
I enjoy living under a rock and being oblivious.
That is not sarcasm. I am serious.
I get my info on MGoBlog so I do hope other people keep looking at news and bringing it here. It's kind of like an RSS feed.

My advice is t0 take the money saved and put it toward the Scott Bell newsletter. He's a talented writer, he's funny and he's a died in the wool Michigan fan.
November 5th, 2023 at 8:32 AM ^
You're not alone. Me and my friend canceled our subscriptions to The Athletic as well.
November 5th, 2023 at 8:41 AM ^
I cancelled The Athletic.
November 5th, 2023 at 8:52 AM ^
I haven't read any stories on this in the media because what's the point? I don't need writers' opinions on facts, especially when the facts haven't been established yet.

I haven’t cancelled anything but I’m not shopping at Home Depot any more. It’s a shame, since I like going there, but they’re ultimately one of the ones financing the clicks and breathless speculation at ESPN.
And while I’m at it, to hell with Flo and Dr. Pepper, too.
November 5th, 2023 at 9:47 AM ^
I was going to upvote you until you mentioned Dr. Pepper. Aw, heck, here’s a +1 anyway.
November 5th, 2023 at 4:16 PM ^
Ha! Agreed: Avoiding Dr. Pepper is admittedly not much of a sacrifice for me.
Home D is though--and I'm honestly not much of a fan of boycotts for a variety of reasons. But I have such strong associations between the orange bucket and College Gameday--and now by extension ESPN's apparently determined incubation of this miserable thing--that buying paint or a socket wrench at Lowe's or Ace is just more enjoyable.

I hate Dr. Pepper but they have by far the best college football season commercials LOL.
November 5th, 2023 at 10:42 AM ^
Canceled The Athletic and ESPN+. They are entitled to cover this of course, but the coverage is 1) entirely one-sided 2) without any context whatsoever which would require careful analysis beyond “polls” 3) endlessly repetitive, injected into any story that covers Michigan football for any reason 4) driving hysterical fan overreactions and calls for premature action. I don’t need to fund this.
November 7th, 2023 at 1:00 AM ^
Yep that sums it up.
November 5th, 2023 at 11:04 AM ^
My subscription to The Athletic is up for renewal next month. I will cancel at that time.
November 5th, 2023 at 2:03 PM ^
I’ve used this to justify my free accessing of Athletic via script blocker add ons

All the national sports media is garbage. Especially when it comes to drumming up scandal and sensationalizing events. Have not subscribed or paid attention to them for years.
