#1 Quarterback Julian Sayin in Portal

Submitted by jmstranger on January 19th, 2024 at 9:38 AM

Julian Sayin has entered the portal. His final list was Alabama, Texas, LSU, and Ohio State. Could this explain why Ryan Day hired Bill O’Brien (I’m not sure how involved he would have been in Sayin’s recruitment prior to leaving Alabama)

Being a signee does not guarantee Noland the job. He hasn’t been in the practice field yet. This is just like when McCord and Ewers both went to OSU to compete with Stroud after Fields.

Very few QBs are settled in their jobs, which is why many of them are leaving 1) to follow their coaches and the offense they already know or 2) to take their already proven capabilities from a smaller school to a bigger program in need or 3) to use their HS blue chip status to get a chance at a school after losing out on a job or not liking their experience or coaches at old school or) a combo of the above.

We may see Noland transfer if he doesn’t feel he’s getting an opportunity to compete with Sayin or feels lied to.

All teams have no QB if they have 4 QBs. Howard is a stop gap for OSU and then the pecking order after him is determined by practice performance, most likely.

OSU is chasing us for a competent starter, buying more lotto tickets, and I know everyone that drops their jaws to the floor for 5 stars will cry about Harbaugh’s flirt with the pros, but I believe Moore is at M to stay as HC or OC—if he were less confident with the QB room or felt “need” to find a transfer QB, he’d pursue those guys more in the portal.

This is the way.

I visit all of the OSU boards (Eleven Warriors, Bucknuts, O-Zone, etc...) and see no chatter at all about Sayin to OSU especially since they have Noland and another 5-star - St Clair - coming in 2025. What insiders are you hearing this from? I actually think we would have a much better  chance at Sayin - considering our current QB lineup - than OSU but we need to get our 2024 coaching staff in place for that to happen.

I see Wilfong's quote and possible prediction now for Sayin to OSU - didn't see it earlier. Jesus H Christ, their NIL money - especially with all of those players returning that were NFL picks - has to be going through the roof. I think it's safe to say the pressure is on Day in 2024. He has to beat UM and win the B1G - at the very least - or he's probably out the door kicking cans.

Bama just pulled in Austin Mack - Penix's backup at Washington - yesterday off the portal.  This probably pushed Sayin out the door.  Seems like DeBoer is bringing in his own QB.  I didn't think Milroe was a good fit for DeBoer's offense anyway - can't throw intermediate routes.  But I didn't think that roster would get (almost) gutted, either.

It seems like this kid was pretty focused on playing for Saban, so not sure how much BOB moves the needle. He's also a true freshman, so it doesn't really help us for 2024 unless we think he's markedly better than Davis and could start immediately (I'm not suggesting that to be clear). Still think our best bet would be to find someone after the spring ball transfer window.

He could end up going to someone not on that list (probably not Michigan). Look at the QB situations on each roster:

Texas has Ewers and then Arch Manning waiting in the wings

LSU just recruited Bryce Underwood for 2025. I suppose he could go to LSU, but is LSU going to risk losing Underwood?

Ohio State almost certainly is going with Will Howard this year and also recruited Air Noland in 2024 (on top of having Brown and Kleinholz).

He's from California, maybe he ends up at one of the California schools? UCLA and USC definitely have more favorable positions.

Very good point - which leads me to - just how "generational" Caleb Williams really is.

I expect the Chicago Bears to use the #1 overall pick to select Williams - only to find that decision being much closer to Mitch Trubisky than Patrick Mahomes.   The Bears should trade the #1 pick and see how they can upgrade their OL - but, they probably won't do that.

This won’t affect Michigan at all.  Air Noland is ohios QB this cycle and Underwood is locked into L$U.  Could be Texas in my opinion.
