OT: Travis Kelce shoving Andy Reid: acceptable or unacceptable?

Submitted by Wendyk5 on February 12th, 2024 at 5:25 PM

Question for the board: I got into a discussion with someone about that moment in the first quarter when Travis Kelce yelled at Andy Reid and shoved him. The person, who claims to have worked in the NFL for 25 years but is a woman so not in a coaching or playing capacity, said those types of things are accepted in the NFL. I disagreed and said if they have that kind of relationship, it's best kept in the locker room because it's a bad look. And if it was so acceptable, why doesn't it happen more often? Football is a game of aggression and tempers flare all the time.

I'm curious what people here think.

As a Chiefs fan that follows the team fairly closely, I've noticed Kelce getting in more confrontations the past couple years. Whether in the preseason with teammates, throwing his helmet on the sideline during games, and now this.

Kelce and Reid are both first ballot HOFers, but this gives Kelce another bad mark in the public eye. Dude is intense, but this just looks bad no matter how Coach Reid tries to sugar coat it. End of the day, hopefully Kelce apologizes and takes a long look at his behavior. Andy Reid is a saint.

It didn't really even look that bad.

When I read "shove", I thought about someone coming up and putting all, of not most, of their power into pushing the guy a few to several feet. It looked like he was pretty worked up and went to get the coaches attention and grabbed his arm, but in his emotionally state was a little too aggressive.

If I was the coach, I would be more pissed about the yelling at me.

He bumped him, he didn't shove him. It looked worse than it was bc he caught him off guard and he stumbled. Obviously any player on the team can't yell at the HC like that, but they're both vets. And Reid seemed genuinely fine with all of it ...

“He keeps me young,” Reid laughed on CBS’ post-game show. “He tested that hip out. He caught me off balance – normally, I’d give him a little bit, but I didn’t have any feet under me.”

Reid later reiterated in his post-match press conference that he only stumbled because Kelce caught him off balance, adding that it just shows the tight end’s desire to win.

“The part I love is that he loves to play the game and he wants to help his team win,” Reid told reporters. “It’s not a selfish thing, that’s not what it is, and I understand that.

“So as much as he bumps into me, I get after him and we understand that.”

Kelce told ESPN after the game that he was going to keep what was said “between us” and joked that he was just telling Reid “how much I love him.”

“I got the greatest coach this game has ever seen,” Kelce told reporters after the game. “He’s unbelievable at not only dialing up plays and having everybody prepared, but he’s one of the best leaders of men I’ve ever seen in my life.

“He’s helped me a lot with that, with channeling that emotion, with channeling that passion and I owe my entire career to that guy and being able to kind of control how emotional I get.

“I just love him, man.”

Seems like a very healthy coach-player relationship.

A shove?

Seemed more like the big guy's brakes failed; he simply didn't know where his big body stopped and where the other big body started. My thinking? Move along, there's nothing to see here ... The two dudes will decide if they want to submit insurance claims for autobody work or just not bother.

The rationalization here is insane. He did know where his body was going? Dude is an NFL HOF tight end, he knew exactly what he was doing. If it were an accident, basic human behavior would suggest he would "catch" his coach and apologize, before any further interaction. That is 100% not what happened. The excuse making here is off the charts insane.

I bet Marshawn Lynch wishes he was that adamant with Pete Carroll during Super Bowl XLIX.  Instead all he can do is laugh about how dumb it was to not give him the ball.  Also, according to both parties involved it wasn't a shove or at least wasn't intentional.

Haven’t read the comments yet. Basically she is right and you aren’t paying a lot of attention.

We see people yell at each other on the sideline often, including with coaches. It looks bad and scolds always go “tsk tsk” but it’s fairly common.

What looked especially bad here is that Reid was totally oblivious and so when Kelce got close it startled Reid and knocked him off balance, in part, as later explained, because of his hip issues.

I do believe Kelce did go too far in that it was obvious Reid didn’t know he was there and he should not have physically bumped him (probably even if Reid had his head up) so, sure, he crossed a line. But only just barely. So given the choice between “acceptable” and “unacceptable,” I say acceptable.

That's not what I saw when I re-watched it. I saw Andy Reid steel himself with Kelce in his face, and I saw a teammate try to pull Kelce away. Reid said later that he's learning how to work with Kelce and his emotions, so it's an issue. A big issue? Probably not. If he had just yelled at him, I wouldn't have thought a thing about it. But bumping him or shoving him or really getting so close that he can't help but come into contact with him is the thing that puts it over the line for me. Imagine if this had been one of the Harbaugh's. What do you think their reactions would have been?

Have no idea about Jim but if Lamar was yelling at John like that John would have told him to sit down and a player or assistant would have came a walked Lamar to the bench.  Then they would continue to play and coach, say nothing to the media, and maybe talk in private.  So pretty much exactly how Andy Reid handled it.

It really tough to relate to and understand the whole situation.  When it happened, I didn't think much of it but it definitely left me trying to envision someone doing that to Coach Harbaugh.  I have no idea how he would react but this crap goes on more often in the league.  Coaches and players all seem "equal" with little accountability and one of the reasons I don't really like pro sports.

From a relationship standpoint, these types of actions give off huge red flags.  I understand everyone loses their shit (I do) but when your on the biggest stage and you can't control it, it's extremely alarming and probably more normal when behind closed doors.  I was once told by a fellow leader "a man who can control their emotions is far more powerful than a man who can't" and that has proven very true thus far.

He is trying to hard to impress Taylor when he already has her. He needs to dial things back down.

He dressed like a dope on the way to the super bowl; the Andy Reid confrontation was uncalled for; and the platform celebration was cringe.

It doesn’t matter because:

1) They won.

2) It’s the Chiefs. They’re all media darlings. Even if they’d lost, I doubt this is a story in two weeks.

3) Based off who Kelce is dating, he’s going to have all the more protection over this.

Honestly don’t think it’s that big a deal. They’re in a sport that accepts and glorifies violence, Kelce is the best TE in the league, Reid is the best coach in the league. They’re winners, so it’ll be chalked up as two winners getting in a passionate dispute. They’re going to get the benefit of the doubt.

If this was happening, say, between Daniel Jones and Brian Daboll, it’d be much more of a thing because their team is a tire fire.

Context is essential here.

not acceptable.  I mean I know Kelce was under a lot of pressure what with his rich-enough-to-buy-the-team GF watching, but you can't be pushing the head coach around.

If I were Reid I'd be thinking about how to get him off the team via trade.

I mean, it's not great to shove your boss but by all accounts both Kelce and Reid didn't see it as a problem and so I'm not going to over analyze a work relationship that is in such a unique setup as an NFL sideline.

I'm old enough that I remember the Jeff George/June Jones sideline confrontation back in 1996.  Jones was having none of that, and he made sure George never played another own with the Falcons.

George obviously crossed Jones' boundary.  What Kelce did was pretty similar, and it MIGHT have crossed Reid's boundary.  We'll find out: if some moves are made to trade Kelce in the off-season.  I won't blame Reid for not acting yesterday, given it was during the freaking Super Bowl.

And if Reid has a different boundary than Jones had?   That would be fine.  The establishment of boundaries --- that's between those 2 folks.  Not me.

100 % unacceptable.  Physical insubordination like that is not ok.   Maybe there was something we don't know about.   If not, hope he apologized to Coach Reid for that.  He is a great player and quite a public figure now representing a lot of products in commercials.  Not sure how those paying him for commercials feel about that, but it might slow his commercial offers. Of course it's mostly between him and Coach Reid.  Just really did not like seeing that and hope we don't see it from him again.

If you want to pay me 12million a year and occasionally bump into me and yell in my face. Im your man. I probably wont even club you in the back of the head with a 2x4 later for that kind of money. Boys will be boys

Meh whatever. I was more worried that Reid was going to have a damn heart attack. He was taken by surprise and was clearly startled  …and he isnt exactly  fittest fellow.

Chiefs are annoying AF, but can’t deny the greatness there.

I’ll be more than happy to see Kelce retire , the biggest meathead. Luckily that should be sooner than later. 34 is ancient in nfl

I would have benched the guy.  Of course, I am not a coach and didn’t get to spend the day wondering what the new Super Bowl rings will look like. So, I’m going to say it was a non-issue.

It’s certainly not ideal, but I think your friend is completely right and probably much better positioned to understand NFL norms than 95% of the world even though she isn’t a coach.  Coaches have different styles and different relationships with different players.  Belichek is going to have different boundaries than Dan Campbell.  And Campbell would have 100% barked back at him and then given him hug 45 seconds afterward, fwiw.  Reid didn’t seem that pissed at the moment and totally didn’t care afterwards so who gives a fuck?  I remember Brady having a scream off with an assistant (was it O’Brien?) and people made a big deal because it was Brady.  But it wasn’t a big deal, it was guys getting emotional under pressure and I would imagine it happens all the time.

Kelce is yelling at one of the greatest coaches of all time. I rank him higher than Belichick. Kelce should have showed some maturity and ranted up and down the bench.
