OT: Brian Ferentz of Iowa hold press conference, vows that offense will remain the same
Brian Ferentz, who is the alleged coordinator of Iowa's alleged offense, held his first press conference since Week 2. He promised no changes.
And I don't mean "he didn't promise any changes." I mean "he promised that he will not change anything."
He also had a doozy of quote when DIRECTLY asked whether he'd consider stepping down.
“There’s two options in life in any situation,” Ferentz said, via 247 Sports. “You can surrender, and if you surrender, then I think the results are pretty much guaranteed. Or you can dig in, you can continue to fight, and you can try to improve and do things better. I will always choose option A. Done it in my personal life. Done it in my professional life. I wouldn’t be able to go home and look my children in the eye if I wasn’t an option B person. I think I said option A. I started with option surrender, right? That’s not me. Let me be crystal clear about that. That’s number one.”
No further comment.

Not being an Iowa fan, my reaction is "good for him."
I just wish he was at Ohio State.
October 13th, 2022 at 7:09 PM ^
Me? I'm an Option C guy. That's the one where I tell everyone else to just fuck off.
October 13th, 2022 at 7:33 PM ^
You don't have to change for anyone for anyone, Brian! Success is a state of mind--just keep on bein' positive! You do you!
October 13th, 2022 at 7:49 PM ^
I believe we are 6-0! …and the offense is outstanding!
October 14th, 2022 at 3:49 AM ^
Google maps can re-route tho, so no big deal.
October 13th, 2022 at 11:36 PM ^
He’s never going to change. 27 of the 32 people who signed his high school yearbook told him to stay the same and not change for ANYONE. - There’s no way that many people could be wrong!
October 13th, 2022 at 9:31 PM ^
So he's not an Option B person and non-not an Option A person and Option A is surrender, and ... he's not surrending.
Got it.
October 13th, 2022 at 9:46 PM ^
And remember, that that's number 1.
October 13th, 2022 at 10:28 PM ^
He's good at doing Number Two.
October 13th, 2022 at 10:34 PM ^
Doesn’t it go A and 2 or 1 and B?
October 13th, 2022 at 11:30 PM ^
Wonder how well he can do rock, paper, scissors???
October 14th, 2022 at 9:19 AM ^
Rock? darn
How about rock? darn
This time, rock. darn
Maybe rock? darn

I'm so glad I'm not a Hawkeyes fan
October 13th, 2022 at 6:47 PM ^
It's almost like Kirk Ferentz legitimately hates Iowa at this point.
October 13th, 2022 at 8:17 PM ^
With the buyout Kirk has, he is probably hoping he gets canned.
October 13th, 2022 at 10:34 PM ^
Master of understatement.
October 13th, 2022 at 6:40 PM ^
That was the most 3-and-out, punt for field position response ever
October 13th, 2022 at 6:43 PM ^
Nah. That was a "punt, recover the muff, lose 6 yards, punt again, recover a fumble for 1st and goal, lose 5 yards, and kick a field goal" response :)

it really sucks that SI has basically turned into long twitter comments.
October 13th, 2022 at 7:50 PM ^
It does. It used to be the home of the best writing about sports and life there was, but that’s probably gone forever. My favorite SI story ever:

The beginning of the end was when they hired he-who-shall-not-be-named after his hatchet job in that crappy newspaper from Detroit. Lie down with dogs, wake up with fleas.

Iowa fans are too happy with the status quo. It's not an easy place to recruit high school football players, but they need to demand more for their loyalty and dollars. The Ferentz family is making about $ 8 million per year for producing yearly mediocrity. When the Offensive Coordinator, who is also the Head Coach's son basically gives the fans the middle finger, it's time for them to storm the Bastille.
October 13th, 2022 at 9:31 PM ^
Iowa was a powerhouse when hayden Fry recruited NJ and FL. Of course, that was when few teams, except for ND, recruited nationally. Now, everyone does.
Iowa is the poster child for nepotism....
October 13th, 2022 at 10:20 PM ^
You can't blame this on Iowa fans. Visit any Iowa blog - they're beside themselves about their offense.
It's Kirk Ferentz who seems content with the status quo.
October 15th, 2022 at 4:48 AM ^
Iowa fans are not happy at all with the way this season is going. They would all love to see a new OC.
October 13th, 2022 at 6:53 PM ^
Iowa students/fans need to protest like we did with Dave Brandon. Either Kirk needs to fire his son or he needs to go. The worst part is they’re pissing away one of the best defenses in the country. If they had an offense that was just ranked 60-70 (instead of the 100+ they are now) in Offensive SP+ they’d win the B1G west. Unacceptable.
October 13th, 2022 at 7:35 PM ^
Where and/or who is their Hawkeye Devotee?
October 13th, 2022 at 7:44 PM ^
Dunno, but you can be sure he's wearing gold pants.
October 13th, 2022 at 10:25 PM ^
Well, in our case we made ugly national news over the Shane Morris concussion fiasco, and then it was revealed that Dave Brandon was writing rude emails to fans. If we had just been bad at football, he wouldn't have gotten fired.
October 13th, 2022 at 6:55 PM ^
I’d be mortified by the on field product if I was an Iowa fan, and the fact that your head coach is too stubborn to ever change, and has effectively doubled down by hiring his son as the OC, makes me feel like you’re just wasting years of great defensive products. If they modernized even just a smidge on offense…..
But I suppose in a way this is what Iowa deserves. They keep extending Ferentz, despite having one good year for every 3-4 wildly mediocre ones. He knows they’re not going to fire him. So what incentive does he have to change?
October 13th, 2022 at 7:21 PM ^
We were plenty mortified having to watch RichRod's defenses who got torched by even the most mediocre of opponents...not to mention those abysmal offensive lines under Brady Hoke who were responsible for "protecting" Devin Gardner. We know that helpless feeling very well.
But imagine seeing those products and knowing that RichRod would never be fired....that's a truly terrifying thought.
October 13th, 2022 at 8:02 PM ^
Lets be honest, and I'm an OSU fan... Iowa is and never will be (TY Kirk!) what UM is on the football field. Expectations are just different, and Kirk can continue his long reign of mediocre football with an occasional good season mixed in. UM (and OSU) have ENTIRELY different expectations than Iowa, I think their fans have just accepted that at this point. I have to give some credit to the Ferentz family, they've certainly found their niche at being millionaires for half-assed performance!
October 13th, 2022 at 8:20 PM ^
Agree to disagree. With this attitude, they just refuse to try and come into the 20th, not even 21st, century. But hey whatever.
October 13th, 2022 at 10:35 PM ^
They keep extending Ferentz, despite having one good year for every 3-4 wildly mediocre ones.
They could easily do worse. This is a school in a state of 3 million people, which it shares with another Power 5 program. Iowa faces a very uncertain future post-Ferentz.
Ferentz's overall record is good, all things considered. It's just surprising that he's now willing to squander a very good defense in order to keep his son employed.
October 13th, 2022 at 10:48 PM ^
I would bet they try and hire Bert, he played there.
October 13th, 2022 at 6:55 PM ^
If running into a wall was good enough for my dad, it's good enough for me, and it's good enough for all of you!
October 13th, 2022 at 7:02 PM ^
Old Iowa teams used to run into walls with competent-to-great OLs, good RBs, and at least functional college QBs. Now they've downgraded at all those positions.
October 13th, 2022 at 6:58 PM ^
To the delight of the rest of the B1G.
October 13th, 2022 at 9:07 PM ^
The B1G does not benefit when one of our traditionally better (or at least dependable) programs is now constantly a national joke.
October 13th, 2022 at 7:01 PM ^
So he’s not sure if he should surrender or dig in? Maybe he should ask his dad.
October 14th, 2022 at 10:24 AM ^
He doesn't report to his dad - that type of nepotism is forbidden by the Iowa employee code of conduct. He reports directly to the AD, who probably should advise him to go with Option A.
October 13th, 2022 at 7:03 PM ^
Definite Baghdad Bob (Baghdad Brian?) vibes here:
- "We're giving them a real lesson today. Heavy doesn't accurately describe the level of casualties we have inflicted." = "We gave Illinois a real lesson Saturday. Heavy doesn't accurately describe the pain we inflicted on their defense."
- "We defeated them yesterday. God willing, I will provide you with more information. I swear by God, I swear by God, those who are staying in Washington and London have thrown these mercenaries in a crematorium." = "We defeated them Saturday. Just like every other Saturday. Those who are football fans in Champaign, Ann Arbor and Ames have thrown their coaches and players in a crematorium."
October 13th, 2022 at 7:06 PM ^
I'd be embarrassed if I were in his place. Dude gets $860k/year to suck at his job and then promises that he's going to continue sucking at his job.
October 13th, 2022 at 9:26 PM ^
Benefits of nepotism.
October 13th, 2022 at 9:33 PM ^
but, you cannot doubt his honesty....
October 13th, 2022 at 9:48 PM ^
