The case to have them in all cars is highly convincing, and it's coming, potentially as soon as 2026. Of course, things could change before then....

I think a breathalyzer would work reasonably well, but only if paired with a camera and seat sensor. I think that’s been part of the discussion for this concept, although I admit I haven’t been following the conversation closely.

The idea being: driver sits in driver seat, a camera/motion sensor kicks on as driver blows into device for a reading. If driver gets out of the driver seat, the seat and motion sensor will detect it and the vehicle will turn off (or at least not be capable of shifting out of park). Tampering with the mechanism would also theoretically carry criminal charges and imbue any subsequent criminal action attributable to DWI with “knowledge” or “intent”, versus recklessness or negligence.

Denard really screwed up here, and I’m thankful he didn’t injure himself or others.

I'm really torn about this one.  I hate cancel culture and zero tolerance, but Denard had another chance and the precedent has been set with Scruggs.  OTOH, he is part of the Michigan family, and families rally around and support their own with tough love.  I can see a path to atonement (probably a bike or pedestrian path) with an end result that is better than just tossing someone aside.

It sounds like no one was hurt including himself. I have not heard of him having any issues like this in the past. I hope he gets whatever help he needs and gets back on his feet.

He wasn't intoxicated with that one ---- but it was still pretty bizarre.

He and his companion were literally found sleeping in a car that was partially submerged (and sinking further) in a pond (after someone else called 911).

The officers start knocking on the windows, his companion acknowledges the officers but then ignores them and falls BACK asleep.  The officers finally have to remove her from the car by force, then woke Denard up and he left (willingly).

Forget Uber.  This is Denard Robinson, in Ann Arbor.  The first sober Michigan fan he found would have driven him home, no questions asked.  Hell, I'd have flown up to Detroit, rented a car, and gone to pick him up.

He doesn't owe anything to me, or to the fanbase.  But he's got a family... a family that he's just let down in a very serious way.  I'm beyond sad for them.

How many of the kids (adults, really) attending classes at UM today could recognize who DRob is, understand his importance to the football program, and decide to offer such a ride in the few seconds they'd see him stumbling through a parking lot?

I'd say precious few.  And when considering the times we live in today, where you're as likely to be assaulted as taken up on an offer of help, even fewer would offer.

But if he asked for help - either a ride or an Uber call - I don't doubt for a second that he would have immediately received such help.

21-year-olds today were 8 in 2011.  I suspect many of them pretended to be Denard Robinson in the backyard.

You're right that he probably would have needed to ask, though.  I don't generally recommend trying to place yourself in harm's way around an inebriated stranger, famous or otherwise.

As a current junior I can assure you that a really really significant proportion of the student body, including myself, grew up with Denard as the lone bright spot in an otherwise tormenting Michigan Football adolescence. Just as Redux said, I grew up pretending to be Denard in my backyard
