Somewhere, I think it was the in the Edward Gibbon work The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire , where I had read that the Romans had a strong belief in each unique hour after midnight to the dawn, describing the effects and emotion in each, and even had their own names.  It's vague in memory as I read it awhile ago but at the time was very insightful.

2024 and still no recorded incidents of anything good ever happening at 3am.

This is so much more disappointing than Scruggs, who I wouldn't recognize if he sat next to me.

If his job wasn’t working with young men and being a role model for them, I would say that the court’s punishment is sufficient, but there’s no way this can go unpunished. I hate to say it, but I think he needs to be let go.

So fucking stupid. Call an Uber, man. Or better yet, you’re Denard Robinson, in Ann Arbor. Half the town’s population would be happy to drive you home on their own dime, no questions asked.

You’ve got a family, dude. Why put them and yourself in this position?

I don’t know if that’s the end of his coaching career, but that’s likely the end of it at Michigan.

Possibly but I can’t imagine a scenario it’s at Michigan. Once these college coaches or staffers have an alcohol-related offense, they seem to follow a distinct path of: being fired, accepting consequences publicly, seeking varying degrees of “help” or “support” for an undetermined amount of time, get hired in an administrative position with a non-P5/lower division athletic department, and then possibly start making your way back up the ladder.

The amount of coaches and former players who have alcohol-related driving offenses is downright silly and even with the tougher laws, folks still seem to find ways back into college athletics but you have to do the time. I’d bet Denard gets let go, makes a public apology and uses a phrase like “need time to straighten things out”, finds a quality control assistant job in the next 2-3 years at Coastal Carolina or San Diego State.

Not mad, just disappointed.

Everyone deserves a second chance, and I don't believe Denard is a repeat offender. At least as far as drinking and driving goes.

I just don't see him getting that opportunity at Michigan. Already had to let Scruggs go for the same issue. Moore has to set the tone really early for what he wants his program to stand for, even if that means letting guys go who are Michigan mainstays and were otherwise net gains on your program.

I don't want to badmouth Denard, but this is getting (or is already past) comical how Michigan Football just cannot stop shooting itself in the dick with incidents like these.  Let's get it together and not do stupid things, folks, deal?

JFC. You can’t tell me they don’t have a staffer available 24/7 that will pick them up from wherever and get them home safely ESPECIALLY IN ANN ARBOR. No excuses for this.

Reports are saying charges pending toxicology. It was 3am. Fingers crossed he just worked late and was tired.

But the fact he’s been suspended indefinitely is not a good sign that my hopes will be realized.

Huh? I’ve never had a DUI and give myself a two-beer maximum if I’m going to drive but I can’t imagine a cop finds it necessary to take a toxicology report for being tired… at 3 a.m. mind you?!

You’re either drunk or buzzed if you’re getting arrested. If you’re just tired, even the most lenient police officer is going to field sobriety test you if you cause an accident early in the morning and if you’re truly sober, I have to believe the officer would let Denard-freaking-Robinson off with just a ticket. Sadly, I don’t think we can bury our heads in the sand on this one.

True but I’m also a 200 lb man and don’t shotgun beers like a first year undergrad anymore. My point is there is a safe (or safer) way to consume alcohol and drive where you’re not putting yourself in danger.

I also see some folks saying that Denard needs rehabilitation due to this situation. While his incident maybe more systemic of a drinking problem, he could’ve just made a dumb decision and paid the price. I don’t think everyone who gets a DUI is an alcoholic but I’m sure the standard drunk driving courses would help.

Maybe Bob Sapolsky and Sam Harris, among others, are right and he doesn't have free will to choose not to drink and drive and I don't have free will to not post this.

DR was a ray of sunshine during those dark years - and, always lit it up against the Irish - which was one of several great qualities.

I don’t want to tell people what to do, but - for the well being of yourself and others - if you’re not sure - call an Uber - life is too precious and short.

I hope Denard is OK and learns from a bad mistake. Coach Moore needs to address this with his staff. Its embarrassing at this point. Call an uber.

I'm still giving him the benefit of the doubt until further notice.

i mean, what if he was driving home and a dog ran out in the road.  he swerved to avoid killing someone's pet Fido, his wheel hit the curb, popping his front tire, sending the car into a street sign.  the officer who reported smelled alcohol and offered a breathalizer.  Denard, knowing he only had two beers said sure, I'm good.   BAC showed up at .08 and he was arrested.  He didn't believe that was correct so he requested a blood test, they are currently awaiting results.....   So what if the results come back .06 and no charges are filed.....

I have no idea what happened, but if its anything similar to that...... I'm on Denard's side.

One of my favorites players of all time, and I'm really sorry to hear this. I see lots of strong opinions below about what should happen, and I honestly don't know what the answer is though my instincts are generally to support second chances if earned.

Denard, you are better than this. Best not to drink when you are out. And if you choose to, just call a Uber. Whether you are a public figure or not, you have to be responsible. Drive like my kids are in the car next to you.

WTF! Very sad and sorry to hear that this was about Denard. Didn't he get the memo after the Scruggs incident? I really hope that Denard willl get to keep his job after he goes through some serious treatment. I don't like one and done type indicents like these. Hopefully, unlike Scruggs, Denard does not have a history of drinking to excess. BTW: 3AM is not time to be out on the roads after drinking then driving.
