It's kind of humorous how…

It's kind of humorous how they're acting like "OSU getting into the money-in-sports business" is some novel innovation.

"Ryan Day has taken a step…

"Ryan Day has taken a step back from day-to-day coaching"

Aw crap.  Now we're really in trouble.

Absolutely no one with an…

Absolutely no one with an NFL coaching job is interested in going to the NCAA level unless they have absolutely no other choice.  That's been pretty clear from the off-season coaching moves we've seen.

I don't think there's a…

I don't think there's a legal issue as long as you admit players are employees and put them under contract (yes the NCAA will fight that notion of employee status).  There are various legal tools like non-compete agreements that could be used as well.  Yes I know that non-competes are taking a general beating right now (and probably rightfully so), but hitting regular office drones and line cooks with non-competes isn't the same as an All-Conference caliber football player.

Khary Crump to Penn State? …

Khary Crump to Penn State?  Er, wait, that should be State Pen.  My bad.

Maybe this is 5D chess. Hire…

Maybe this is 5D chess. Hire Brian Ferentz, ask him for ideas to improve your offense, and then so the exact opposite of everything he says.

While you are absolutely…

While you are absolutely right, I hope they never do that kind of introspection. Let them keep trying the same shit over and over because they're certain it's only the cheating that's holding them back. The minute they actually look at themselves in the mirror and make changes, we'll be in a worse situation.

Isn't that what got Mellllll…

Isn't that what got Mellllll in so much trouble?

I'm not sure we need to be…

I'm not sure we need to be throwing rocks with regard to men's basketball for a while here.

An epic con job followed…

An epic con job followed within 24 months by one of the most epic bag fumbles of all time.

I'm saying that if contracts…

I'm saying that if contracts bar the players from transferring, tampering would be pointless.  If the player is locked in somewhere until 2027, why would anyone waste time trying to tamper in 2024, etc.?

I think if it starts to…

I think if it starts to operate more openly like a business, people won't feel the desire to donate.  If people want to "contribute" to their local pro team, they can buy things like suite season tickets, or do corporate sponsorships (the official furniture supplier of the Detroit Lions).  Those are transactions where the buyer at least gets something tangible in return (access to games, their logo somewhere in the stadium, etc.).

At a certain point, as a fan, you start to question whether you need to be giving more in addition to buying tickets, buying merch, watching games on TV.  These teams and ADs are already making no shortage of money, so donor fatigue is going to be real, and I suspect will set in pretty quickly when the novelty of NIL wears off.

Maybe the conference payouts…

Maybe the conference payouts can be designed in such a way that they include contract agreements to clamp down on the constant transfer portal tampering.  If the player is contractually bound to 2 or 3 years at a school, then that gets rid of at least a substantial component of the "re recruit your whole roster every year" problem.

Individually each of those…

Individually each of those ingredients is legally permissible. It's only when they're assembled in an unlicensed fabrication shop (i.e. the Brown Jug) that they transmute into one of the most heinously illegal substances known to mankind.

Transfer portal buyer's…

Transfer portal buyer's remorse is going to become a standalone genre until we can get contracts figured out.

He didn't have any idea what…

He didn't have any idea what incoming transfers were going to commit or not commit when he first came out of the portal.  He's making decisions based on a RAPIDLY changing roster situation, and while I won't say it's a good look to bounce in and out of the portal like that, I think it's much more a product of the environment than any statement on GWIII's ability to "figure things out."

Why would you do that when…

Why would you do that when you have a perfectly good sink and shower?

I imagine any player who's…

I imagine any player who's going to be on TV remotely could just be shipped one from every team.

I mean, from a "deserved to…

I mean, from a "deserved to be there" perspective that's fair, but in reality Alabama gave Michigan a tougher game than FSU would have given their situation.  I was annoyed that the committee gave Bama the spot based on an injury, but frankly I think the way the games played out proved the committee right.

Michael Barrett has actually…

Michael Barrett has actually been the shadow commissioner for the last 15 months.

Regardless, them being…

Regardless, them being behind Illinois after round 3 is still very funny.

I believe Yale has also had…

I believe Yale has also had a player drafted.

I appreciate his good years…

I appreciate his good years as the head coach quite a bit too! The wheels fell off, but 2019-2021 was a lot of fun in MBB thanks to Juwan.

The only Michigan players I…

The only Michigan players I think the Lions would be likely to take would be OL.  The Lions positions of need this year for the Lions just don't match the positions that Michigan actually put in the draft.

I think Washington is…

I think Washington is looking at more of a rebuild year than Michigan, and hopefully that'll make the secondary market doable.

I don't think Sherrone's…

I don't think Sherrone's feelings on the matter are meaningfully different.

Profoundly annoying.

Profoundly annoying.

I'm not gonna feel awesome…

I'm not gonna feel awesome about cheering for Aidan to clobber JJ.

Hindsight will be very…

Hindsight will be very interesting on that draft order in a few years. I obviously have the same bias that most of us on this board do, and to be fair the only Penix game I watched live was his worst one of the year, but man do I not see him before JJ as making any sense at all.

Safety school!

Safety school!

And possibly the last…

And possibly the last meaningful edition of The Game to boot, since rematches the next week are on the table from now on.

I think it's been alleged…

I think it's been alleged that Kentucky (and probably plenty of programs) are promising more in NIL than they can actually pay.  Kids don't have contracts so if the offers turn out to be vaporware, the players are still stuck for 1 year at least.

The NCAA refusing to cede…

The NCAA refusing to cede ground on "amateurism" is the heart of the issue, IMO.  They missed their opportunity to allow payments but with restrictions, or to enable contract structures.  Instead they dug in their heels on amateur status until the courts simply took away their ability to enforce anything, which has led to anarchy.  There's an alternate reality where the NCAA creates an actual structure around player payments (sometime in the mid-2000s) and college sports suck significantly less in 2024.

Dunning-Krueger case study,…

Dunning-Krueger case study, IMO.

I'm not trying to totally…

I'm not trying to totally crap on those places, but I wouldn't characterize Rodgers as "quite recent," he was drafted in 2005.  19 years ago.  It's just that I've watched recent PAC games on TV and the atmosphere is noticeably different.  The Rose Bowl is freakin empty when UCLA plays home games, so is Stanford's stadium.  I agree people should enjoy things, but it objectively looks like it's not large numbers of people in the case of some of these west coast schools, and Stanford in particular.

The CFB arms race has probably contributed to that by making mid-size ADs less able to compete, and I don't cheer that reality on.  I'd like nothing more than to go back to before Maryland and Rutgers joined the B1G.  But this is the reality we live in, and I don't think it's worthwhile to pretend that Stanford has a comparable level of fan engagement as Michigan.

It's not so much the pay as…

It's not so much the pay as the presence or absence of rules and contracts around the pay that are the problem.  Pro leagues don't have that problem because it's not free agency free-for-all every single offseason, with functionally no caps on rosters.

Their home football…

Their home football attendance doesn't really agree.  I don't think that's a campus community that really cares, at least not relative to B1G or SEC schools.

Yeah, I'm not really sure I…

Yeah, I'm not really sure I get the value of seeing the draft on TV.  It's good information and interesting to follow live, but I feel like simply seeing what happens on social media (and/or the inevitable MgoBoard live thread) will be sufficient in terms of knowing what happens in close to real time.

Oh my god they're SO close…

Oh my god they're SO close to figuring it out.

Joe Theismann would be a…

Joe Theismann would be a closer comparison.

The AD hired 2 great…

The AD hired 2 great strength coaches in Herbert and Sanderson before they were great.  It is perfectly reasonable to be confident that the AD can repeat that performance.

Didn't Joey Vazquez JUST…

Didn't Joey Vazquez JUST transfer to OSU like 2 months ago?

I'd say the expectation is…

I'd say the expectation is be in the bubble conversation going into March.  Getting in is a reasonable hope, but I wouldn't say it's reasonable as an expectation.  If I'm actually paying attention to Selection Sunday, then I would consider Dusty year 0/1 a success.

Alright, that's a wrap on…

Alright, that's a wrap on these puns.

It seems like some people…

It seems like some people have gotten caught up in the hype and forgotten we were the worst team in the conference by a good margin 2 months ago. This rebuild is going to be a process.

Why would you prefer any…

Why would you prefer any network over the one that gives us Gus and Joel calling Michigan games? Those 2 are the best in the business and have been for a few years now.

This. My understanding was…

This. My understanding was that many of the potential transfers are going through the draft advisory process, even though none of the ones Michigan is looking at are likely to be remotely draftable.

I heard we finally get to…

I heard we finally get to cash in our MGoPoints for American dollars!

He should be metaphorically…

He should be metaphorically nailed to a cross in that his career as a media personality should be over due to the weight of public shame and opprobrium.

Should he be literally nailed to a cross? Probably not worth it, given the price of lumber these days.

I think that's kind of the…

I think that's kind of the idea.  State governments will likely enter into a race to give their local universities the greatest advantage.
