Will You Root For the Chargers? and Will Jim Win A Super Bowl With the Chargers?

Submitted by FlaWolverine22 on January 25th, 2024 at 7:09 AM

I want to start this off by saying I love Jim Harbaugh. I’m very thankful for what we accomplished here and I will absolutely root for him to succeed in the NFL again. As far as winning a Super Bowl, I’m not so sure he’ll be able to win one. I think he’ll make the AFC Championship Game twice in 5 years. I can’t see him making it past Mahomes, Burrow and Josh Allen right now.

Yes I'll root for the Chargers, I'll slot them as my third favorite NFL team after the Lions and Bills. As for Jim and the Chargers winning the Super Bowl, it's possible but I wouldn't bet on it. I'm not sold on Herbert, and from what I understand they have roster/salary cap issues. Still, Jim is a turnaround expert so anything is possible.

I’m a Packers fan, so no reason to root for another team. I won’t think about Harbaugh at all after this initial wave goes by. Good luck to him, maybe I’ll see the Chargers if they’re in one of the bigger games, but I won’t be seeking them out.

I don't really have a dog in the AFC fight. I used to root for the Broncos way back in the day because I followed Brian Griese up and I thought it was funny the they had Terrell Davis while we had David Terrell (I was like 9, okay). And of course always enjoyed watching Tom Brady thrive. But that was all second to rooting for the Lions anyway. So I guess I can root for the Chargers? I don't really care much about the AFC though... it's kinda like me trying to find an NL team to root for. I just don't care about the NL.

That said, I truly think this will be similar to a JB situation with the NBA. While I see the fit from Jim's history, I don't think the fit is there culture-wise from ownership, which was his problem with the 49ers in the first place. I don't think he has the right players there to play how he wants his teams to play, and they don't have the cap space to get the right players there. We'll see, but I don't think they sniff a super bowl. Ravens games should be fun, though.

No, and no.

If they aren't the Lions, they are the enemy. I hope the Lions throw on Ambry Thomas so bad this weekend it ends his career. I hope the Lions beat the Chargers so bad Jim Harbaugh becomes the laughing stock of the NFL.

...and LA sucks... and the Chargers are not good, are in cap hell, have idiot owners, and no fans.

Have fun going 7-10 in front of 50 people in a city that doesn't even care when their favored team wins a Super Bowl, breathing smog, and dealing with the Spanos family, who are known for driving out coaches.

In terms of my sports emotional investment—what I really care about enough to actively pay attention to and follow—here’s how it breaks down for me:

80% Michigan football

15% other U-M sports

5% all other sports, including NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA, boxing, motor sports

I’m only interested in the Lions right now because I was a Lions fan growing up, they’re winning, and my 99-year old FIL knows it’s probably the last chance he has to see them win a championship; if they sink back to mediocrity I’ll go back to mostly ignoring them.

I don’t care what Harbaugh does in LA. I'm going to focus my attention on those who stay at Michigan.

Nope. Been a lions fan since birth and a jags fan since that first playoff run in ‘96.

he was great at UM and brought this program back to where it belongs but I’ve never been a fan of him in the NFL.

I appreciate Harbaugh for what he had done for Michigan, and albeit I am not a fan of his decision, he made it based off of what he believes is best for him.  Having said that, I will not root for the Chargers, and I do not think they win a Super Bowl.

At the very best, the Chargers will finish second in their division.  As long as Mahomes is there, Kansas City will be better than the Chargers.

Harbaugh has not always been the "quarterback whisperer", especially at Michigan.  Prior to J.J. Michigan really didn't develop a quarterback to elite status, and it was onlynafter Campbell came on board that McCarthy took off.

Absolutely rooting for him/them, to whatever extent I care about the NFL/LA Chargers.

Not seeing a Super Bowl as likely within five years. however.

Not an NFL fan, so no. I like Harbaugh as he relates to Michigan. He's not someone I'll follow outside of Michigan, but I guess I'll be curious how it goes for him.

I cheered for Jim at Stanford and SF and will continue to do so when he's coaching the Chargers on Sunday.

For whatever reason, the NCAA saw Harbaugh as their "White Whale". I am convinced that they would have have pursued Michigan with other spurrious infraction allegations as long as Harbaugh was coach here.

Hoping the NFL gives Jim and even bigger platform to mock and ridicule the NCAA from.

I'll be happy if Harbaugh wins a Super Bowl since I know it will be him achieving his goal.  But no, I won't root for the Chargers.  I'll continue to be a Browns fan.

I will passively root for the Chargers now, just as I passively root for the Seahawks, Packers, Lions, Browns, and Raiders. I won’t go to bed mad when any of those teams lose but it’s good to see them win. With that said, I don’t care about the NFL and don’t fully understand how one’s loyalty to an NFL team could ever exist at the same level as loyalty to a school. Objectively, screw the NFL but it can still be fun to watch.

I've rooted for the Chargers since the days of John Hadl and Lance Alworth.  The AFL was so much more fun than the NFL before the merger.  Bring back the real powder blue jerseys!  I will  root hard for JH the Chargers to win the Super Bowl.   I'll even get Sunday Ticket so I can watch every game.

The NFL doesn't move me and its corporate aesthetics are awful, but yeah, passively rooting for Jim to win the Super Bowl in his first season -- which I wouldn't be shocked if he did -- then return as head coach

Nothing against Sherrone but Jim is the best football coach of the last 25 years, maybe longer.  Saban is great but always relied on a gazillion five-stars.  So did Pete Carroll in his USC days.  Belichick had the greatest QB ever.  I don't know who else you would consider.  Jim repeatedly takes quasi-hopeless situations and turns them around almost instantly.  What he did at Stanford and the 49ers was almost unthinkable, and he just won a national title in a way no one previously thought possible.

One thing we've seen is the guy is playing chess with three simultaneous boards while most coaches are playing a strong game of checkers in terms of process. culture, identity building and systems. The way he pivoted off the situation that was stuck in an arguable free fall against OSU and reset things starting in 2021 is proof positive.

And that's another superpower he honed: nimbleness of approach. He changed the building and the way he interacted with the players making it a fun place to come to work. Completely different from the first 2/3 of his time at Michigan.

So yes absolutely he'll win one with Herbert. At least one.

And yes absolutely he'll get my enthusiastic support. He is a Michigan legend: player and coach.

Yes and No.

go Lions, chargers can be my AFC rooting interest with little to no emotional investment. And sadly I don’t see it coming together for the chargers to get there, the people who say how talented and close they are… are they?

I won't root for them but I won't root against them. They are not unlikable like Dallas, KC and all Chicago/Ohio teams in every sport.  But they aren't my team either.

I root for the Steelers AFC and Lions NFC.

He may in a SB but uts going to take some time.

I mean I think Harbaugh will be successful with the Chargers in that he's going to have them consistently in the playoffs, but being in the same division as Mahomes seems like a big roadblock and having three QBs in your conference who are clearly better than your guy since like a pretty big impediment to making the Super Bowl.  And probably 4 once you take into account Lamar Jackson.

But there's good chance we see lots of playoff matchups with his brother and it's entertaining and I wish him the best.

I hope he goes 0-17 and gets fired by mid year 2.

Sorry, I care about Michigan not Jim Harbaugh. He the enemy now.

Yeah, of course I will pull for Jimmy except when they are playing Lions or Seahawks, as a lot here are saying.

Do I think he gets to another SB, ooof, will be quite a task. That division is brutal and have to go through Lamar, Mahomes, Burrow, Allen year in and year out....plus like all have said, his team is second fiddle in their own home city.

He is taking his shot before retirement, he doesnt have too many years left, but I wish him all the best

As long as he isn't playing pro teams I care about, I'll root for Jim. It's lovely for him to get to ride into the sunset as a champion, like the Lone Ranger. We will always have this natty and three straight over tOSU. But I will admit to being butthurt that he treated Michigan as a stepping stone rather than a destination. But that's my problem.

No and no. I'm indifferent to Harbaugh at this point now. He's not the coach of Michigan and as long as he's not the coach of the Lions I don't really care if he wins or not anymore. Michigan > Lions >  100 other things > other NFL teams.

“Root” is a strong word. I will pay a little more attention to the Chargers next season. Sure. Other than that? I’m not sure I really care much what Jim does or does not do at the next level.

I'll probably root for them passively. I already sort of like them because their uniforms are sharp as hell. But with Jim coaching it gives me a team in the AFC to casually root for.
