Which camp are you in if Harbaugh leaves?

Submitted by MichiganiaMan on January 14th, 2024 at 2:58 PM

With day that passes w/o the announcement of an extension, I grow more convinced that Coach Harbaugh is heading back to the NFL. I’m guessing that the fanbase will separate along these fault lines:

1) Those who say Harbaugh was compelled to scratch the NFL itch, and he simply couldn’t resist that any longer. Vs…

2) Those who turn their ire toward Warde, believing he failed to protect and elevate Michigan football and should be pushed out.

My question: Which of these camps would you see yourself falling into?

#3 Fritz Crisler retired after the undefeated Mad Magicians season of 1947 saying that team spoiled him.  He felt he would never again have a team that good.

I see that feeling in Harbaugh about #144, especially in his speech last night.

For the UM fans, we see the potential for Harbaugh to cement a legacy at Michigan much as Saban has at Alabama (even if there isn’t the number of NC wins). That’s why most of us want to see him stay.

For Harbaugh himself, I don’t think anything he does has ever been about the money. He knows how close he came to a SB win during his time at San Francisco and that failure might just be eating at him still. If that’s the reason Harbaugh leaves then it has nothing to do with Warde Manuel or Michigan’s contract offer. I’d hope, though, that Michigan makes the concessions necessary to retain Harbaugh, even if that SB itch is still present in him.

Hard to have any answer to this. I would love to say JH wanted to stay at UOFM forever, but how many times have coaches said that they were not going to go anywhere else, and then turn around and do the exact opposite? Plus, with the way UOFM Pres, Santa Ono, and the UOFM fans showed how much they support JH, I find it hard to believe that Warde doesn't give in a little and go against what he thinks, especially with the self preservation aspect of it.

I really feel like the team is shooting itself in the foot with waiting sooooooo long to come out with their decisions. If JH leaves, I don't know if Sherrone Moore showed enough to be named the next HC. If this is true, then most, if not all, of the staff is gone. Then we will have to rebuild. Plus, if Sherrone Moore isn't the answer, we missed out with not getting a chance at Kalen DeBoer. I don't know if I can take anymore experimental years like Rich Rod or Hoke.

Didn’t think I’d have to say this twice, but the above statement triggered me! So here it goes:

WTF? Harbaugh can’t “declare his intention” to coach in the NFL until there is AN OFFER for the NFL! Is he supposed to say “I’m hoping to go back to the NFL” without a job offer? How the fuck would that even work? Are you an idiot?

As for JJ, WTF was he supposed to do? Declare for the NFL during the playoffs? It’s been less that ONE WEEK since he helped M win a National Championship. Give the kid some fucking space. He deserves to decide on his own timeline.

So, basically your problem is that M just won the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP and that delayed pursuit of the future for JJ and JH!

You people make me laugh.

So what you are saying is that I can not have my own opinion? Maybe we don't need your opinion, because the way you sound, you sound like some people over on 11 worriers with the way you talk. What is wrong with me wanting to have a dominate run like Alabama, Georgia, USC, and maybe I don't want to lose to oSU anytime soon? My comment was mostly inregards to JH. Everything you read it makes it sound like he wants to stay, but the next thing you read says that he might be interviewing for the pros. He doesn't owe me anything, but I do wish he would just say it. And JJ can do what ever he wants, just like I can wish for whatever I want.

People like you, make me laugh when you say "triggered".

Was thinking about how we just went 15-0 and won the national championship, as well as won the last ever Pac 10/12 game, as well as won Nick Saban's last game, as well as beat his successor, as well as beat OSU/PSU/MSU and everyone else.

How did Ohio State's season end again? =) =)

Everybody continues to act like Harbaugh has all of these options. You would think ten NFL teams are sitting around begging Jim Harbaugh to be their coach.

NOBODY has offered him a job except Michigan. The Raiders players want Antonio Pierce, and I'm willing to bet the Chargers go with a coordinator. That leaves....Michigan.

I thought this was going to be a Moore vs. Minter question.  I’m in the Minter camp.

If Jim leaves, I blame the NCAA and the B1G.  They hate / fear Harbaugh’s advocacy for player empowerment and revenue sharing.  They’ve been out to get him since the satellite camps and it’s only intensified as he grew more successful.

75% the former, 25% the latter.

I think that it's pretty clear now that Harbaugh has an offer on the table and simply hasn't prioritized signing. Which almost certainly means he's eyeing the NFL to see what sort of opportunities are there.

But I also think that part of the reason the NFL looks so appealing to him is that he doesn't really believe the athletic department... Warde... has his back.

These options aren’t great.  It’s probably a combination of the two but also I lay a lot of this on the actions of the NCAA this past season.  The cheeseburger suspension and the utter nonsense of sign investigation likely play a big role as well.  Will they ever disclose who sent them the initial pre-packaged “investigation”?  I’m not holding my breath.   I don’t blame JH at all for bouncing out.  If he chooses.  The man has done enough.

I would lean towards the first camp. Harbaugh has gone on record with his feelings about winning a Super Bowl and how the fact that he came so close still tugs at him. If he decides that he wants to give it another try, there's nothing anyone can do or say to change his mind. That's the one opportunity Michigan can't offer him. And after everything he's done for the program the past three seasons, he's earned the right to pursue it on his own terms.

And let's not go overboard in our criticism of Warde. Has he been the perfect AD? No, but Warde was the one who decided to stick with Harbaugh after 2020 despite the fact that much of the fanbase had joined the torch-and-pitchfork mob. I believe him when he says he's doing everything he can to keep Harbaugh with us.

It is pointless to speak of changing what we can't possibly change. WE can't alter what can't be altered. If he goes, he goes.

We've lived with the prospect of Harbaugh leaving for the NFL since his first double digit win season. He's had a bunch.

The issue for us is stability and expectation of greatness. He's delivered that. If it's not in the cards to return JJ and company, then it's not in the cards to have Jim return.

My hope is he realizes that returning to Michigan is more than a satisfactory career endeavor and that going to the not for long league always ends less well whenever that end comes. I want him back. If he goes, I'll wish him well. Then, we start over. And all our opponents rejoice.

There are no "two camps" or three camps, or however many one wants to create...

Harbaugh's ultimate goal in life is to win a Super Bowl.  He never won a SB as a player, he almost won a SB as a coach.  Harbaugh is returning to the NFL to complete his ultimate goal in life.

Harbaugh turned 60 last month.  How many tries does Harbaugh have left to win a SB?  One?  Perhaps 2 if he is lucky?

Harbaugh coached at UM for 9 years.  Harbaugh never stays anywhere for very long.  Harbaugh's longest HC stint before UM was 4 years.

This "camp" idea is moot.  There never was a camp.  Harbaugh wants to win a Super Bowl and he's running out of time.  Leaving now is a great time for him to leave, and Harbaugh knows it.

Count our blessings.  Harbaugh got us a national championship.  He will go down as one of UM's greatest HCs.

Both or neither.

The context and times affect how we judge actions. Don Canham, the AD under Bo was hailed as a marketing genius because he actually realized we can market the UM brand/logo and made the vast sum of ... $100,000 doing that. Of course at that time, most AD never heard of the idea. Today, every influencer and youtuber has "merch".

Was Bill Martin a "Great" AD when he ended up hiring Rich Rod? Yet, he did a magnificent job in renovating the stadium and the surrounding buildings and athletic campus because coming from a building/housing industry these played to his strengths.

His successor, managed to achieve a rarity - actually galvanized the student body to call for his ouster complete with protests in from the Presidential house and demonstrations. He also linked tickets with buying two liter bottles of pop as if the game experience was just one more cheap commodity.

Jim Hackett showed his wisdom as the interim AD - he knew his one job: go get Jim Harbaugh hired. He did this an quietly faded out of the scene - people conveniently forget that - probably the most successful 1.5-2 year run as AD.

Harbaugh is a unique character. Let's just see how it plays out and always enjoy the past 9 years - an epic story that turned out with a happy ending. If there isn't a second volume, so be it, the time was still epic.

I'm forever indebted to Jim Hackett. He saw the need, gracefully removed Hoke (Hoke left with class and even went to the team banquet after his firing), got JH with a contract that rivaled everyone but Saban and Urban but still a great deal.

If Harbaugh leaves it’s because he wants to. He’s flirted with the NFL multiple times and seems ready to jump at a good offer. Meanwhile Michigan is ready to make him an elite offer and showed a willingness to go to the mat for him against the Itty-Bitty Pettiti Committee, until Harbaugh’s man Partridge screwed it up.

If “show him the love” means, as it’s rumored to, “give me contractual immunity to getting fired even if the NCAA gives me a show cause for SignBurger”, then honestly, I think that’s unrealistic on Harbaugh’s part.

3) The camp where Michigan cannot give him the contractual assurances that he won't be fired for cause when the NCAA lays down a level 1 violation for Burgergate and/or Signgate.

Im in the camp that if Harbs leaves then it's up to Warde to pay Moore and Minter enough to stay. If he fails at that then sure fire him.

Harbaugh leaving to the NFL is on Harbaugh. He's been dancing around the topic for years. If anything Warde has been in one of the harder positions amongst ADs lately. Im sure it is very frustrating having to scout head coach replacements years after year. He has a monster contract on the table for Harbaugh and all we can wait for is Harbaughs decision (He gone).

I'm no fan of Warde, but after the NC on one hand I don't think Warde would hold back on any reasonable demand, and on the other it's easier for Harbaugh to switch his attention to fulfilling his super bowl goal now with his CFP one attained.

Why not both?  As to Harbaugh, he has delivered what we all wanted:  a national championship, obviously, but more importantly a revived and refreshed Michigan football program with a culture that other programs could only dream of.  I badly want him to stick around until he retires, but he has more than earned the opportunity to choose what's best for him.

As to Warde, he's . . . just not very good.  We'll always think (probably correctly) that a better AD could have kept a coach that probably truly wanted to stay.  We'll always think (probably correctly) that a better AD could have more deftly managed the "sign stealing" controversy, and certainly could have provided better messaging within the limits of what the NCAA allows.  We'll always wonder whether a better AD could have put the basketball team in a better place, etc.

I also worry about Warde overseeing a football coaching vacancy.  For that reason and many others, I'm extremely glad Sherrone Moore is where he is right now.  An internal promotion isn't always the best way to go, but I think Sherrone has proven his ability and I think Warde would screw up an open search.

So how's this scenario? Jim decides to pursue his dream of putting the Lombardi Trophy on his mantle, and within his typical sell-by date, wins it with the Chargers, after which management gets tired of him, though he's in the pantheon of that franchise's fans.

In the meantime, his successor here maintains a high level of success. Top 3 in the B18G and multiple playoff appearances. And then that coach gets poached by the NFL.

And Jim, like Bill Snyder, decides to come back and coach us to his retirement.

I have to go with 1. Having been around the game most of my life, at almost every level, I understand if Harbs wants, no NEEDS to scratch that itch. What a brutal way to lose a SB. He doesn't owe anybody anything.

The #2 camp people are generally reaching, dk shit about what they dk shit about, or have some other underlying issue with "Warde" that they're possibly in denial about.

I find it kind of disgusting that so many, especially those lacking parchment from our school, have the audacity to send so much vitriol to one of our own, a Michigan Man, based mostly on speculation. Especially a son of Bo.

Most of them couldn't give two shits about hockey, and wouldn't know Mel if he slapped em in the face, Juwan Howard style. So cut the bs about that being the reason he's loathed so much.

Does he sort of have a fat, annoying face? Yes. Has he handled everything promptly and thoroughly? From my couch, I'd say probably not. But Manuel should get some credit for the natty. A lot of us wanted Harbs gone. And understandably so, at the time.

Our AD didn't allow emotions or recency bias move him to fire Harbaugh, and he lit a little bit of fire under his ass too, in the process. He told the legendary Jim Harbaugh to shit or get off the pot. And he did. He shat a lot. No matter how you want to spin it, it worked.

It took balls and it took savvy to navigate that whole shitshow. Especially for a black man at a school where were less than 10(7?)% of the student body, alumni base, etc, etc. look like him, or are even privvy to/give a shit about the disproportionate fuckery he faces in a position like that.

Warde Manuel. A true Michigan Man. Harbs, a true Michigan Man.

2. I feel like the NCAA is out to get him and the Big Ten. They are actively making this an unwelcome environment for him and hounding him on false allegations and fake news. Maybe it's because Harbaugh wants to shake up the system and unionize players and the big wigs don't like that. Whatever he's done, he's made a lot of enemies in the NCAA and they will continue to try to persecute him for bullshit. At this point I honestly think he's better off leaving. The NCAA is so petty and vindictive and immature that they will not drop this Stallions shit. He's better off leaving and I hate to say it but its' best for him IMO
